Some of you are completely clueless. OBJ has a huge contract. And you think someone is giving up two top 10 #1s for him. Give me a break and get real

It’s not a huge contract. In fact, he’s not even one of the top 40 highest paid players in the NFL. Giants paid him $21M last year: Browns only have to pay him $15M per. It’s the best top WR contract in the league

The Pats tried to trade for OBJ last year. People are way undervaluing his talent. He’s awesome. In fact, his talent was suppressed by Eli’s inability to push the ball downfield.

The “issue” with guys like OBJ is that they want to win. It’s only when they don’t win that they want to be paid like crazy.

Totally agree. Because WR is probably the most high profile position..it’s very overvalued.

Replacing a stud WR is much easier than replacing a star on other positions.

And those complaining about the return, it was better than what PIT got from AB, probably a better WR the past few years than OBJ.

This trade isn’t nearly as bad as people are saying.

An interesting justification for the "high profile/crazy WR" I heard was that they are literally 100% dependent on someone else to get them the ball.
They could do everything absolutely correct and still never touch the ball or get stats.
Only position like that (except maybe TE too)

QB/RB get the ball in their hands and get the chance to create on their own.
Even a RB with a terrible OL (see Saquan last year) can still make something happen and get stats.
OL and Defensive players can make their own plays as well.

Sort of make sense why WRs go crazy eventually.

This is why I think the Giants should draft Haskins and ALSO trade for Josh Rosen.
Rosen's contract is super cheap - signing bonus already paid by Arizona.

Let them battle it out this year and increase chances of getting a franchise QB.

I’m not sure the Giants ever had 2 first round picks on the table???where is that coming from, the FAN? They are almost as tuned in as this forum.
Seems to me, a first round 17th pick could be very substantial as well as a 3rd rounder.
Peppers? Ehh but who cares? Maybe he gives some help at safety and proves to be a weapon as a returner. And I bet he sells some jerseys.
Maybe they could do better but not a bad deal. But let’s see what they do with these picks.

It's the highest contract for a wide reciever in the NFL. How is it not huge?

No it isn’t. Watkins, AB and Evans all make more. Giants already paid the monster part contract.
He is still owed $70mill. They paid $21. Avg over life of the deal is almost $19 highest among WR.

Contract is much cheaper after 1st year because signing bonus is already paid by prior team (similar to Josh Rosen).
This is why trading him after the 1st year is the worst possible thing for the Giants/Gettleman to do.
They paid all the up front money but then lost all value for the rest of the contact.

Here is the breakdown: https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cleveland-browns/odell-beckham-jr-14421/

"Odell Beckham, Jr. signed a 5 year, $90,000,000 contract with the New York Giants, including a $20,000,000 signing bonus, $65,000,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $18,000,000. In 2019, Beckham, Jr. will earn a base salary of $16,750,000 and a workout bonus of $250,000, while carrying a cap hit of $17,000,000 and a dead cap value of $19,500,000"

2019: 17mil
2020: 14mil
2021:16mil
2022:15mil
2023: 15mil

Plus there is an out after 2020 with zero dead cap.

I think you missed the discussion.

Someone said the Patriots "abhor" big personalities. Then Gronk was pointed out.
They then tried to backtrack and say "Well, Gronk is off the field stuff. He doesn't bring distractions on the field."

Then Gronk was clearly shown being a distraction on the field.

You actually prove the point.
Gronk is more of a distraction on the field than OBJ and has been more recently.

The point is your premise of "Patriots don't like personalities" is at minimum wrong and at best nonsensical.

In addition to Gronk, the Patriots literally traded for Josh Gordon last year and won the SB - just like the Eagles did. A player out of the league for substance abuse problems.
Dont forget Aaron Hernandez as well. The guy that every team in the NFL knew was trouble.

To me, if you dump OBJ, you dump Eli. No point in starting a 38 year old QB without his best weapon. There's no adequate replacement for OBJ, so why not blow it all up? Hopefully, they can draft Haskins and have him start at some point. Gonna be a long year.

Giants fan here. I've said it for years that teams with prominent personalities like obj don't win superbowls. I never expected him to get one as a giant, and don't expect him to get one as a brown. The giants suddenly became good after shockey and tiki left. The pats abhor big personalities. The Steelers couldn't win one with AB and LB. The eagles, though, won with lunch pail files.

I've wanted him off the team for this reason for a while. It's fun watching when the spectacular, and that will be missed. This deal is about setting the groundwork for eventually reaching team goals.

Was obj leading the giants to a playoff run in 2019 w eli? In 2020 with a rookie? Blink and hes 28 years old, even less durable, and even more tired. This was the best value you're ever going to get for him. Trade had to be done.

How many times did the Steelers beat the Pats with AB and Bell? None.

That illustrates my point. When you employ a formula that leads to bad results, it's smart not to double down on that formula. He was a fun player to watch at times but nothing he did led the Giants to victories. We can all agree that having an unstable personality in your organization can cuz the organization to perform at a level below optimal. For all the hoopla, he only Played in one playoff game and in that game he was a total bust, which is being kind.

Both the Giants and Browns are at different points and both did well here. Giants need to win a draft now.

Your point has been thoroughly refuted by multiple posts.
So just going to still ignore the multiple instances of Patriots with "unstable personalities" on their Super Bowl teams? Ok.

Nothing OBJ did led the Giants to losses. His first 3 years 2015-2017 (before Eli really went downhill) were phenomenal and led the team to wins.
2017 season? OBJ played 4 games. Still had 3 TDs in 4 games.
2018 season? OBJ was the least of their troubles. They went 5-11 with Barkley. They can go 5-11 without Barkley. Trade him too.

Small sample size for playoffs? Lets play that game.
Eli Manning first playoff game:
2005: 10/18 (55%), 113yards, 0TD, 3INT

"Total bust, which is being kind."
Giants should have traded him.

Hate to lose such a talent but GOOD RIDDANCE. Maybe its me but it seems like the Giants' skid the past few years started as soon as they had control issues with OBJ. When OBJ was NOT disclplined properly by the then coach it seemed like the coach lost control of the team. OBJ was seemingly a cancer in the lockerroom.

Prior throughout the years the Giants always had a vibe of professionalism thats seemingly gone now. Even messed up LT was all business on the field and would do anything to win (on or off the field).

One player does not a football team make. I was lucky to score tickets to the NFC Championship one year-The Giants vs Vikings. I was worried the Vikings would run amok w Randy Moss. The Giants won 51-0.

Time to rebuild this team with proven veterans with good attitudes who can teach newer players.

Browns had gone 3-13, 1-15 and 0-16 and had the #1 pick in 2018. The Giants have gone 3-13 (#2 pick 2018) and 5-11 (#6 pick 2019).
They are more or less at the same point.
The Browns almost made the playoffs with a rookie QB last year.

Maybe the Browns are 1 year ahead because they dealt with the QB and RB position last year.
So if the Giants hit on a QB this year, does that mean they try to trade for an elite WR for 2020?
Can they get OBJ back?

You say my point was refuted. I saw comments about my post, but nothing to refute anything. Gronk acts nothing like obj on the field. Nor does he go and denigrate his team in interviews. And josh morgan is about the most low key person there is. Hardly visible out there.

Look, it's fine to disagree. When obj hoists up that superbowl trophy, I'll eat my words. It wasnt going to be realistic for him in NY, and if there is no plan to win the superbowl, then getting a young talent and 1st rounder is more than satisfying.

It's not trading obj that's the problem. Its how everything went down. If we were going to trade him for peanuts, why even extend his contract in the first place. We shouldve traded him last year. Gettleman is an fing moron. Flood level moron. Its unbelievable. And that's just what he did for OBJ
Not enough touches for two of the best weapons in Football. This is good for LBJ and probably the Giants if they draft well. Also opens up some money to get some help on OL and DL.

The Cleveland Browns have been making some big moves the past two years. This has to be the best that team has looked in decades. It will be interesting to see what other big moves they make in the offseason. I would put them right up there with the Patriots, Chiefs and Steelers in the AFC. Those Browns-Steelers games are going to be a whole lot more interesting then they have been for years, that’s for sure.

What's dumb is the suggestion that last year's decision should dictate the path forward from now on. The plan changed from 'win now' to rebuild. Nothing wrong with that.
That and the fact that Odell ruffled Giants feathers by saying that he isn"t sure that he wants to be a Giant long term just a month after the Giants made him the highest paid WR in NFL history. After seeing what the Raiders got for a comparable talent, it makes sense to make this move after what Odell said last year. Why wait for the inevitable problem like Brown was for Pittsburg. Then it is too late to get a decent return.

I've mostly heard Giants fans complaining what a distraction OBJ is and how they lost in the playoffs because he took some teammates on a boat ride in Miami during the 2016 playoffs.

Now all I'm hearing is how trading him is the worst thing ever.

The Giants went 5-11 with OBJ on the team last year. I think it's fair to say they can go 5-11 without him.
Be rational man! It is different people doing both complaints. All giant fans are not the same. They are not arguing for both ends as you imply

Were those teams coming off a 3-13 season the year prior?
And in the interest of full disclosure, I was one of the few Giants fans annoyed they took Saquon Barkley instead of one of the quarterbacks.

Actually yes.
Rebuilds don't take 10 years in the NFL. This isn't Coach Ash and Rutgers.
The Giants literally went 11-5 in Eli's 2nd year and won the Super Bowl in his 4th year.

If the Giants hit on a QB in this draft, by 2020 they could have been serious contenders.
They still could be, but it would have been a lot easier with an elite WR already on the team.

You could also argue that a Barkley/Beckham pairing is better than any other RB/WR in the league (maybe KC with Hill/Hunt but that is over now)
Add even a decent QB and the team could instantly be a contender.

You think a QB could develop without an elite WR already on the roster?
Or with no receivers the defense has to account for?

"Ride the RB"

Good lord. Rutgers and Giants - two peas in the same failing offensive pod.

how many OBJ type players do the pats have?
Selfless wins, not selfish
This isn't fantasy football....

A young QB is going to get eaten up by OBJ being in his ear all the time. The QB needs to be leader to reign in any big personalities. Pats have Brady- nobody will out EGO him, but he is the leader and the team will follow suit.

Gronk, Moss all those types of guys are generally kept in check and winning cures all. Giants were never going to win with OBJ- I'd unload him, Barkley and cut Manning. Build a D and find a QB to build around.

Looks like the Patriots thought about acquiring OBJ but his new contract scared them off ultimately.
Makes sense - no chance Belichick pays anyone a top dollar contract regardless of players.

So can we stop with the Patriots comparisons?

#1 NE has arguably the greatest QB ever.
#2 NE has arguably the greatest Coach ever.
#3 It's been pointed out that the Patriots routinely have "trouble" players
#4 None of that matters because of #1 and #2. That's why they win the Super Bowl every other year.

"He drafted Aaron Hernandez, who slipped to the fourth round in 2010 because of concerns about his character and drug use, red flags that scared away other teams. He also drafted cornerback Alfonzo Dennard, who punched a police officer five days before the 2012 NFL Draft, causing him to slip to the seventh round, where the Patriots pounced. has multiple arrests during his career.

Corey Dillon, Albert Haynesworth, and Aqib Talib were all talented players with checkered pasts embraced to improve the roster. Dealt for a second-round pick in 2004, Dillon was arrested in 2000 for domestic violence. Haynesworth was acquired in 2011 while he faced a sexual abuse charge for groping a waitress. Traded to New England during the 2012 season, Talib was arrested for simple battery on a cab driver in 2009 and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in 2011 after a confrontation with his sister’s boyfriend.

(Dillon had his domestic violence charge dropped after he donated $750 to a domestic violence center and underwent treatment. Haynesworth pled no contest to a lesser charge of simple assault. The assault charge against Talib was dropped.)

The Patriots also haven’t shied away from players with a history of recusancy such as Randy Moss and Chad Johnson/Ochocinco. "

Giants weren't going anywhere anway. This is a decent trade. OBJ is incredibly volatile, both in a good way and a bad way. A team that is 3-13 and 5-11 with him and has a ton of holes to fill and a 38 year old QB is better off trading that volatility. Not going anywhere the next two years anyway.

The only question is did they get enough. I think they probably did. I think Peppers becomes a serviceable member of the D and returner, and then they could end up with a quality edge or WR along with the new QB, and perhaps a decent OL with the 3rd round pick.

Hard to know what people were offering for OBJ. But trading him not a bad idea at all.

If "the Giants were going nowhere anyway", then when should they be building for?
What year exactly?
They should probably trade Barkley too if they don't plan on competing until he is due a new contract.

If they aren't going to compete for 5 years, doesn't really matter who they rebuild the D with.
Little chance anybody currently on the roster will still be here.

As an Eagle fan, I LOVE this trade. A guy that was absolutely uncoverable is out of the division. A S with 1 pick in 2 years, a late 3rd and a mid 1st for an all time talent. Ha. To have this work you need all time coaching which the Giants DO NOT have.

Horrific trade by the Giants who will be cellar-dwellers for some time. Thank you Dave Gettleman!
Listen up kids. This ^^^^ is what happens when you smoke too much crack. Don't become this guy and "Just Say No".
