Those were some great Illinois teams. Just had the misfortune of coming along the same time as that Michigan juggernaut with Rice, Robinson, Mills etc.

Bardo, Anderson, Gill, Battle, Liberty and Hamilton. Four of those those guys were essentially cookie cutter interchangeable parts. Fantastic to watch them play!

Robbie Hummel is my favorite Big Ten color commentator... He does stuff for both BTN and ESPN I believe. I don't know if we've had him for any of our games but he does a very good job.

Morris and Bardo are both good as well.

I used to like Jon Crispin but he talks about 25% too much... let the game breathe!

Wenzel I can take or leave.

Dan Dakich is the absolute worst, and the biggest downside to being good enough to get on ESPN is going to be hearing this guy call a game of ours.

I was at the game so didn’t hear Wenzel tonight but I’ve heard enough of him the past couple years to know Crispin, Bardo and Morris are superior to him as analysts on BTN broadcasts.
Me too. And I agree 100%.
However I did re watch a decent bit of it and felt bob wasn't terrible.

I think Wenzel goes out of his way to point out flaws, bad plays etc by RU .... his call on Doorson for standing for 5 seconds in the paint and then nothing on Murphy for the same thing .... actually saying Myles only has one move and just need to move him away from that and he wont score ... Finally his statement saying Rutgers plays to foul you and then hopes the Refs don't call it was crazy Those are a few of his statements off the top of my head from last night

First in fairness to Bob he is a huge and proud alum. As I have said I see him regularly at the golf course. 80%+ of the people would not know he was the Rutgers head coach and infinitely less that he was the last coach that brought Rutgers to the NCAA’s. I don’t think more than a handful know he played at Rutgers. They just know him as the guy that wears Rutgers clothing everyday to the golf course.

As a guy that is 100% different in his everyday life than the naysayers claim, I have to imagine he works extremely hard not to be a homer, especially over these past 20+ years when there was little to brag about other than hope. I’m sure when I seem him next he will be glowing with joy about what Pickell and staff have done.

Great post

I was annoyed by the comments you addressed.

In particular, when he said Doorson was in the lane for 5 seconds - not even close to true.

I rewound the play and watched the shot clock as my timer.

What is considered 5 seconds?
Standing in the “paint” (inside the space where they can’t go during free throws?)

If so, it was a max of 3 seconds between time Doorson entered the lane and shot the ball.

Yes, I almost forgot about Hummel. Good call. A star in the masking. I’ve also heard him interviewed on Sirius XM and he told some great stories about his time playing in Europe. Definitely a good listen.

Hummel is on a list of Purdue players who you loved if they were on your team and hated them if they were not. Matt Painter and Brian Cardinal make that list too.

He did say all those things but if anything, I think that over the years he has been biased towards us, not the other way. His comment on fouling has to be considered in context. What he was talking about is that physical teams, and RU is certainly one, can create a game style in which refs don’t call anywhere as much as they could. And that benefits the more physical teams. Georgetown under John Thompson made a living that way. Their guards were constantly holding. After awhile the refs stop calling it.

And Myles really does have only one move at this point in his career. Wenzel was looking to provide a coach’s point of view on that, not criticize.

I also liked hearing Wenzel comment that Myles was limited in his offensive moves . For the average basketball fan that was information worth knowing as we watch Myles develop his offensive game during his time On The Banks.

The BTN announcers are essentially homers and are not going to have too many strong negative critiques of any teams so I can see where some might see Bob as harsh to dear old Rutgers in comparison. I'm sure as a Rutgers guy in a league where most fans are probably annoyed that Rutgers is even in it in the first place he's conscious of not sounding like a Rutgers homer and may overcompensate a bit. I used to think he was an excellent announcer but some his of "excitement" and catch phrases definitely sound forced. He's a good talker with a good personality and as a former coach he knows the game. He doesn't need that shtick.

This is fantastic. Dreamed of this for years when I moved out to MN in 2000, hoping against hope we’d find a way to the B1G.

Still can’t believe this living out in MN. Going to be at least another solid 30 minutes listening to them rave about RU.

And every one of the things he pointed out were 100% accurate.

Funny. Rutgers gives people reasons to say nice things, and we just get totally giddy about it. Rutgers gives people reasons to say horrible things, and they're all "haters" who are "jealous" that we might get better someday.

You folks are funny.

Once again, thanks Coach. You've given people reasons to say good things about Rutgers, and damn do we need that.

The 2 best coaches I ever had were Wenzel for a religious league in high school and RUClassof67 who inhabits the womens board for Junior league baseball. They made the games fun.
