Should play some box and one with Mathis on Bohannnon or some triangle and two with Mathis face guarding him and Geo playing straight up man on the other guard. Personally I prefer the triangle and two. It's easier to play, plus Omoruyi is the perfect guy to play the top of the zone. With either defense it will be hard to free up Bohannon running him off screens because they won't be able to set them where they want to. I'm sure they don't have an offense prepared for a triangle and two either.

As a team, Iowa shoots too well to implement a "junk" defense. There's a time and place for the defenses you're describing, and I'm surprised coaches don't throw them at a team for a few possession here and there. Not seeing it against Iowa though.

So you want to play a triangle and two, man-covering the guy who is tied for third in scoring and the guy who’s fifth in scoring? And you want to put EO at the top of the zone rather than trying to slow down leading scorer Tyler Cook, who operates around the basket? I don’t think so. Only in a special endgame situation like we saw in the last seconds of the first game. Otherwise, this is a really, really bad idea, unless you are a big fan of Tyler Cook and Luke Garza.

Does pike even utilize junk defenses? If we don’t really practice it, we shouldn’t use it.

Junk defenses won't work against Iowa because they have shooters/scorers at every position..The key to the game is holding Iowa to less than 70 points because Rutgers has such difficulty scoring.even 65 points.

I also wonder why college team’s don’t throw this out for a couple of possessions to make the opposing offense think. It’s like a circle change when you have been showing 2 and 4 seamers the whole game.

If Bohannon and only one other 3 point shooter are on the floor, you can go triangle and two because the two shooters would be manned up. Or, box and one on Bohannon, with our zone box having to pay attention and shade heavily to the other shooter.

It can be done.

Pike used a box and one with Montez in man. It was back in January and only for a couple of possessions or so. I remember it being effective.

Have not seen it more than maybe one other time.

Have to play tight man D the whole game, we have the depth for energy wise but have to hope the refs let them play. If they’re gonna call everything, we oose

If the opponent is hot , I think it’s a good changeup for a few possessions.

I am a believer in tossing a different look out there on an in bound play just to throw off a set play.

Teams still do this? This might work against a team with one or 2 good scorers. They have 4 players averaging double figures.

Teams don’t do this frequently at all. But we played a box and one this year with Mathis being the one. So it’s not out of the realm of possibility.

If you read above, we are talking about using this only when there is 1 or 2 three-point shooting threats on the floor at the same time. Of course this would be dumb when there are 4 three point shooters on the floor.

I'm a no to the Box and One for more than single possessions. To me, it's a CYO-level defense where one kid is head and shoulders above. I'm not thrilled with our ability to play zone well (I touted zone earlier but don't like what I see out of it). So I think it's m2m trying to contest every 3 and hope they shoot 30% or under.

Once again, it’s just crazy. Can you imagine Tyler Cook and Luke Garza playing against a box or a triangle and not having to fight for position the whole game? Come on!

Iowa has more “home cookin” calls than anyone I’ve seen this year outside of Indiana. Prepare to be frustrated.

Not buying the refs revenge in this one for Fran's treatment of their fellow official?

Our defense was fine the 1st time....the silly turnovers vs the 2-2-1 press and missed chippies we get are more important. RU needs to win a game in the low to mid 70s, if they expect to take the next step....can't hold good teams on their home court in the 60s.

1) Zones match up, man. Of course they would have to fight for position. This isn’t the 1940’s!! Come on!!

2) It’s a change of pace defense. It needs to be used properly. Like two possessions when the other team is on a roll. ANO ONE said use it the whole game. Come on!
