If we can only stop the turnovers.

I understand the team is young but the turnovers without a shot on the rim or a run out against us, is the main thing holding us back from winning more games, stretching leads, or coming back from deficits . Yesterday Eugene our junior started the game with 3 turnovers in 4 trips( team started 4 for 4). , a foul . Our entry passes from our guards have not been great but believe it or not Montez, Ron, and Caleb are all making bounce pass entry passes to our bigs better than Geo or Kiss or Issa when he plays. We are throwing a lot of high / low passes that are sometimes successful but numerous other times thrown out of bounds. The carelessness has to stop. If we just took one more dribble to improve the angle of any pass we throw it would reduce the turnovers tremendously.
In numerous games when we stopped turning it over, and just run the offense , continue to drive to the basket and pound it down low to the bigs, we have a functional decent offense that will let us play with anybody in the conference. We have gone numerous games with just 1-2 turnovers a half , so I know we are capable , just have to focus better and we have a chance in every one of the remaining 6 games .

It can be very frustrating watching high risk passes on possessions that mean so much. I really dislike it when Eugene plays guard instead of giving the ball up. I mean the guy is a warrior and there’s so many things he does well but he get stripped a lot when he should be focused on getting open near the basket so he can work his magic. It’s still a very young team so they will learn eventually that every possession in this conference is like a piece of gold.

4 freshman are playing significant minutes, Geo is a soph playing out of position, and we're playing in the toughest conference in the nation.
Perspective is good.

Nonetheless, of the major weaknesses of this team, sloppy turnovers is the most easily fixed. And we know we can fix it because in many games, after starting with a lot of turnovers, the team settles down and values the ball more.

This.

We seem to turn the ball over about 8 times in the first 10 minutes of every 1st half, and then we settle down and only turn the ball over about 6 or 7 times in the rest of the game. So we absolutely CAN take care of the ball.

Of course, with lots of young players, there’s going to be inconsistencies.

I do not understand why coach does not have them run a few sets at the beginning of the games in order to focus them. Every game we start with several turnovers interspersed with crummy shooting.

Even good teams turn the ball over occasionally, but it's usually because they are trying create an opportunity to score and they rarely repeat it. We turn it over because we try to create something that isn't there many times or puts a player in a bad situation. But the other times it's just bad decision making at critical points in the game. These are the ones we can fix with more experience.
When your shooting is inconsistent than giving the possession away is a recipe for disaster.

How about if we make some foul shots!!

need a true PG - hopefully that's Paul Mulcahy. Only wish Eugene was a sophmore and not a junior...

I broke down the fouls in the NW game in the other turnover thread. 9 of the the 16 I counted were while we were attacking the basket, 2 were on shot clock violations., and 1 was on the inability to inbound the ball.

There were only two turnovers that I saw coming from the PG position that had to do with handling/distributing the ball.

We are throwing a lot of high / low passes that are sometimes successful but numerous other times thrown out of bounds.

Lots of people in the game threads seem to HATE the hi-lo stuff.. and I "get it"... but I have been pondering this issue.. that we keep doing it... there has to be a method to the madness.

On the football side of things I am thinking of a parallel with the QB throwing the ball to a spot. We do not do much of that.. the timed passes to a spot with the target receiver having to get to that spot no matter what comes... I have seen it done against us when we had some great pass rushes.

I am thinking that maybe that's what this is.. the big men have to know its coming and just GET THERE. The guards have a green light to throw it... same goes for the ally-oops. We have more of those this year than in probably any 5 year span before Pike got here.

I think it comes down to reading the D, seeing the open ground and just going for it. Maybe the "completion percentage" on those passes will spike up as all the players get more experience with it in game situations.

I think I have to go with Pike on this and see what happens in future years. If only our bigs got more respect from refs.. you go over the top on the D and they are very likely to foul our bigs.. just need more catches and more calls.
