Wow, Rutgers to 5-9 and all alone in 10th place in the standings deep into the season and notching just its 3rd road win ever in league and to a team other than Penn State. You know I felt that this two game road trip was important for perception growth. We had to go 1-1. Tonight was a must win to me because with 4 straight road games and alot of tough games to come, this team needed to be rewarded for playing so well even in this 4 game skid. RU needed to continue the good feels that they were getting and losing twice to Northwestern sort of derails that. RU now has a chance for more meaningful games as they jockey themselves in the standings and a can set the goal of staying out of the first round of the Big 10 tourney. But perhaps most importantly this game was just another leap forward because it gave the team another challenge and another litmus test on progression. This game was incredibly ugly and all of us in the game thread and probably all of you watching at home are so relieved to get this win. It was draining to watch but the thing is, it has to be that way. With so much youth learning to play and learning to execute and learning to make the plays to close out game, its not suppose to be pretty, we are not at that stage yet where we are developed enough to walk into a gym and win mistake free. Everything RU did tonight was hard fought and hard earned. This is another program building win.

The box score tells alot tonight. I thought RU played some outstanding defense until maybe a few desperate NW possession where they hit three treys. 44-30 on the board and 12-5 on the offensive boards...very very few NW 2nd chance points. RU defense got its mojo back tonight. I believe Pardon did not score in the 2nd half and may have only take one shot. Our bigs totally shut him down and I think its a key factor tonight, we even saw some unexpected double team. If someone was going to beat RU it was going to be from the outside and while Law and I think Turner got some late, it was a great decision by Pike and ultimately won the game given RU's struggles to build the lead. But lets go back to that 44-30...wow amazing...RU is so consistent at outboarding their opponents and its such an equalizer given the poor shooting and turnovers. The rebounding numbers show that everyone was involved...Eugene 7, Mathis 7, McConnell, 6, Geo 5, Doorson 5, Myles 4...TEAM EFFORT.

Also when you look at the offensive numbers...again TEAM EFFORT....RU had 8 players contributed in their own way today and each seemed very important at the time

Eugene...2 points, first half, had 9 in the second all in the last 8 minutes and hit the game sealing free throws with ice in his veins to put RU up 3. Gene also hit a monster 3 to give RU a 49-41 lead and that needed breathing space of seperation. Not generally a fan of him shooting those but golly who is to argue with that. I think it was the turning point of the game. Gene was struggling early, alot of turnovers and his shot just wasnt falling but his D was outstanding and he delivered like a leader should in crunch time

Geo....5-11..solid game, 5 assists, I like how Geo pushed the ball at times and took it to the rim. Should be doing it more. He hit a major shot to put RU 51-43 and lets not forget that pass for the Doorson dunk to put RU up 46-41. I have no complaints of Geo tonight and nor should anyone else.

Harper Jr....big part of the win tonight because he got aggressive at the right time. 7 points...needs to make more of those foul shots but he got that critical rebound of a Law miss, might have been better served to take the ball out instead of going to hoop but thats a teaching moment there. I thought Harper was solid overall tonight playing with 4 fouls and is not forcing things, guy is confident

Mathis really kept RU in the game early and then later in the 2nd half provide need offense. I like that Mathis wasnt the one shooting in the crucial possessions. He has a tendency to force things and like that we put the ball in others hands. I really think that Mathis and Geo being able to drive into the line paid off down the line for some shots that went into the paint for Geo/Shaq/Myles. Plus his defense continues to be strong

Myles...wow what a big shot. Big time for him to delivering...just 3 shots tonight made them all. Myles doesnt have to wow, he just has to answer when called. I love it that Pike trusts him in that position. He didnt hit the foul shot and was 0-3 but we can overlook that til later.

Caleb....another strong performance and playing through sickness...6 boards and drained a big time 3 during a flurry where RU took the lead at 39-38. Obviously limited in minutes by not being 100% still Caleb does not have to be the man everynight. For now its okay for him to fulfill a role that isnt going to be as big in some games as other games. He continues to deliver game after game and he grabbed that last rebound of the game as well.

Kiss...gave solid minutes but I wll say this, his beat play was the double technical on he and Law, it put Law on the bench with 3 and even though RU didnt take advantage of that the rest of the half, I believe Law sat in the first few minutes of the 2nd half. Kiss played his role tonight, cannot ask for more

Shaq Doorson...his made baskets thunderous. and the one from Geo to put RU 46-41 gave RU its biggest lead. Again Doorson is answering when being called on, giving his best. Strong defense in the paint on Pardon as well.

Carter/Thiam:...Carter played well vs NW first time without Eug but saw little time tonight and not his best, Thiam continues as the Invisible Man

Its frustrating for the fans and tough on your stomachs but folks we are watching this program develop right before our eyes. They will struggle mightily at times and then play brilliant but this team has developed a fight, a hunger, a toughness, a desire, all those cliches to win. There are so many mistakes, silly turnovers, missed free throws, hair pulling offensive possessions, bricked shots, wide open 3s given up that drives us all batshit crazy. Yet somehow this team sticks with it led by their brilliant coach and several times this year late has gutted out wins and that is what its about, its not about moral victories, its not about playing close, its not about good effort in losing, its not about Same ole Rutgers, its about winning and for the first time in years RU is not only playing but winning meaningful games in March and they are even doing it on the road.

Iowa up next and yes they are beatable. Hopefully the RAC will finally bring its juice that I think has been lacking somewhat.

The freshman and Baker all played very well.

Everyone contributed!

Team is growing up before our eyes...enjoy the process but also expect the frustrations at times given our youth.

At one point late in game, Pike had 4 frosh (Montez; Caleb; Harper and Myles) in game with Baker...and then of course Eugene came in game for obvious reasons.

Yes, we can beat Iowa...let's rac the house and destroy the sellout jinx! I am so psyched for saturday!

One point I want to make is that learning to win is one obstacle but tonight I think RU struggled with learning to play with a decent lead on the road...rare air for RU and I thought that maybe they lost their aggressive a bit and were running alot of clock. Its something the team will have to develop going forward so while it was shaky. NW had that huge lead on Iowa on the road and wilted. Going forward I would love to see more opportunities to play with the lead and starting with Iowa. Can RU play well as the hunted not the hunter

Maybe Pike saw Kike's doubling the post clip. Ru took away his baseline spin every time when they doubled him. He lost the ball a couple of those times. Great adjustment to the issue that they had against Illinois

Good points. I would also like to see us for once get out and take it to another team from the get-go and not struggle like we always do at the start of the game. A fast start especially against a team like Iowa could really help us, especially with the crowd in it.

maybe....if we are 10th this year that means the other 4 are PSU, Nebby, NW and Indiana. I think Nebby is headed for 14th next year. I think NW is beginning to fall behind RU. Okay so that puts us at 12th....PSU has potential whether it shows in the win loss column so I cannot guarantee we will be ahead of them. Indiana is Indiana, they are landing better recruits, whether Miller can coach them is another issue. So yeah RU can finish above those two or finish below. The league is tough. Illinois has more talent than RU...will it develop next year..big question...is Ricky's team sliding down...maybe. I do not envision RU surpassing Mich, MSU, Purdue, Mary, Iowa, Wisky, and OSU so I think our ceiling is probably 8th IF EVERYTHING GOES WELL...with a bottom of 12th. Winning some games at the level RU is at is the start...but winning games to take that leap to NCAA contender is a bear in this league. Look at NW finally got it two years ago after creeping up, look at PSU last year with that talented team didnt do, look at Nebby last year went 13-5 in a down league but couldnt make it. Alot of variables and will RU be ready to win Quad 1 conference games early on that would position them for a NCAA run? Lots of questions and RU does not compete in a vacuum.

I would love that too but it seems like this team just takes time to start going...one good thing is that it does not quit, several games double digits behind at RAC then they find themselves, I think its just the perils of being such a young team, almost expected, hopefully they have that all cylinders game vs Iowa because its in them somewhere

As usual, a very sensible writeup. Just want to talk about this bolded section for a second. I know it wasn't the right play by the book but I think it was the right play for the situation. The way I see it:

If he dribbles away from defenders,
- Wastes another second or two, but no more: the defenders were right on his tail. Certainly doesn't have time to turn around and find an open teammate before he's fouled.
- Then he goes to the line and expected points on the trip goes to about 1.3 because free throw shooting is iffy.
- Slight chance of being tied up. That's a turnover.
- Overall expected points probably about 1.25 with 8 or 9 seconds left

If he attacks the basket,
- Gives up the second or two he would have eaten up avoiding the defense
- Could get stripped, as we saw. Slight chance of turning it over, let's call that slightly higher than the odds of being tied up if he tries to get fouled. However, as it played out, we got back about a second of the 1-2 he gave up by not dribbling away from the defense.
- Great chance of breakway dunk. With iffy FT shooting and not much timing difference, this is probably preferable to getting fouled.
- Some chance of getting fouled in the act of shooting. Some chance on top of that of getting an and-1.
- Overall expected points 1.3*.4+2*.4+2.65*.1+0*.1 = about 1.6 points with somewhere between 8-10 seconds left

One may disagree with the probabilities I assign here, but for an average/below-average FT shooter who is about to be fouled before he can really waste time, I'd rather he go up and try to score.

4 freshman on the court in big/meaningful periods of the game is becoming normal.

have to watch the replay again, did he hesitate at all even for a minute or was he full speed going to the hoop. You do make a good point, not sure if there were any RU players in the vinicity trailing the NW defenders.

i just want him to make free throws in that spot

also I guess Pike isnt a fan of fouling while up 3..didnt have RU foul and I think RU could have near midcourt.....and the way RU shoots free throws its the correct call.

One interesting thing I've noticed is that even though NW and RU are probably the same overall talent wise, it was obvious to me early on that RU was the better team. They play for and seem to trust and support each other more so than a lot of the other teams they've played ---the sum being greater than the parts. That being said, I think they're in for a rough next four games. If they don't clean up their turnovers and FTs, it's probably going to be an ugly stretch. And nobody's going to be taking RU lightly.

and all of them have made plays very late in the game that contributed to the win. You want as much as you can for Gene and Geo to have the rock late but how good is it that we now have a bunch of players getting that crunch time experience

Good point here. Once we got the 8-pt lead, we went into a prevent offense, just running the clock down and then taking desperation shots at the end of the shot clock.

I don’t mind running SOME clock, but please please please just run your normal offense, coach.

Rutgers did what they had to do to make the plays to win on the road. What's different about this team unlike past teams is that they don't get rattled when behind, or when they start poorly like tonight with turnovers, or more importantly when they're up by a few points in closing minutes. That is a tribute to Pike and the players, especially the freshmen on the team who play with such confidence. Rutgers won despite no one particularly standing out on offense and too many missed FTs and shots . But they came up big when needed , rebounded and played tough defense. It was good to see they took Kyk's advice:grimace: to double down low at times and hold Pardon to just a couple of shots. One final comment--I thought Carter should have gotten more minutes. He is a good finisher around the basket and could have contributed tonight.

and note that even Gene's 3 and Geo's near 3 which all went in were late in the shot clock...if those dont go down.....it just looked funky, I would like to ask Pike what was the issue, did the team get tight, did NW adjust on D or was there a concerted effort to run clock maybe not to miss and get beat in transition?

Probably not the latter, Northwestern isn't the kind of team that inspires fear of their transition game

I don't quite remember the exact plays, but you could see late the Northwestern adjusted to take away the drive in the lane. They wanted Rutgers shooting from outside, but earlier in the game Rutgers was still driving, but when Rutgers spread it out, NW was able to take away the drive completely.

Wisconsin loses Happ and has nothing comparable coming in next year. They will still be better than RU on paper, but we match up pretty well with the Badgers.

Baker 31 minutes. That is the right amount. 9 PG minutes for cALEB without a TO. Not sure why NW didnt apply any pressure, but solid job.

maybe....if we are 10th this year that means the other 4 are PSU, Nebby, NW and Indiana. Bac this is spot on so our expectations have to be somewhat tempered for next year but I will also say that if we get some talented position players in the 4’s and 5’s spots in the next 2 classes and when our current diaper dandies are juniors and seniors we have a great chance to be top 3 in the BIG and back in the NCAA’S for sure. This reminds of the beginnings of the 76 team but we need a James Bailey and Holis Copeland plus some more depth to make that next jump. The best thing about this right now is the life and excitement that Pike has breathed back into our team, the RAC and best of all us fans.

The key to the season's progression was winning at Miami early. I know there's been a lot of "so what", from a large contingent of fans downplaying that game, but it set the table for Penn State Illinois and now Northwestern road games.

I have confidence that we can score with Iowa and have guards who can at least stay with them. There's no true answer for Moss or Cook but we'll grind anyway.

These games show the progress matters in all phases...recruiting, player development and confidence. There's no celebration now, it's onto the next challenge.

People are taking notice and with 3 road games left, i can now see a consistent effort home and away....doesn't mean it's easy to win any road game but the team now can play on the road. Big difference in the path towards changing the minds around the region and how the perception of the program is starting to evolve.

It was draining to watch

Good summary Bac

What resonated most to me was your quote above.

Thinking back, it was like watching Blade at the end of the 1st Blade movie.

He was totally drained until he drank the blood of his friend - then got incredible strength back.
That is how I felt after the last 3 clanked off the backboard.

Oh, and thank goodness Iowa came back to beat NW in crushing fashion.

Nate Reuvers is going to be really, really good for them. Different kind of player than Happ (more a shooter than a post guy) but they're not taking any kind of big step back.

I thought we were the better team but could have easily seen us losing that one. Glad we held on. Hard to have a lot of confidence that we are going to knock down two critical FT's like EO did last night. Northwestern should have extended the game earlier by fouling and make us earn it. They are a bad team in this league.

Not sure what we are doing in the half court offense these days. Seems to be emphasizing dribble drives versus passing for open looks. The result: 16 TO's and 10 assists.

We need to take advantage of Myles development in the post and regularly get him touches. Other teams may double but he has shown enough to earn some additional low post scoring opportunities. I don't care for him being out on the perimeter and based on his recent FT shooting I am not sure he is a real threat to shoot from the high post.

I thought EO's overall offensive game was quite frustrating. It is reasonable to expect him to be better with ball.

Another strong contribution from Caleb. 6 rebounds

Thought Geo played pretty well and Montez remains fearless. Thought MM took too many threes but will admit a couple were of the shot clock winding down variety.

Harper is starting to adopt some of Montez's fearlessness and that is a good thing.

Shaq Doorson is playing well. Certainly taking high percentage shots. Don't understand why other teams double him in the post.

Not much PT for Carter, Kiss and Thiam. Shaq's production has dropped off. Both Kiss and Thiam took the ball to the rim but neither finished.

I am in the camp that any win is a good win. Will need to play much better to have a shot against Iowa. Think of Michigan at home recently if we start again like we did last night.

Anyway, my take: We had absolutely no right winning this game shooting 3-16 from 3 and 8-15 from the free throw line and committing 15 turnovers.

But one obvious sign of improvement this year is that when other teams play just as poorly and try to hand us the game, we can take it. This has definitely not been the case in prior years. So we beat a team with two quality seniors on the road. That's the takeaway.

The next step is going to be putting it all together. Or even 75% together. We had cut down on the turnovers against Michigan and Illinois but tonight was quite sloppy. Consider that we turned it over 15 times in 45 minutes against Illinois' pressing defense, it's not great that we turned it over 15 times in 40 minutes against Northwestern's relaxed defense.

The defensive effort that wasn't there for OSU, Michigan, and Illinois showed up last night. Although quite frankly Michigan basically just beat us with the pick-and-pop and Illinois basically just beat us with Bezhanishvili inside. And Wesson was unconscious for Ohio State. So they weren't complete breakdowns defensively, but it sure felt like we were more active tonight and were much better with closeouts on 3-point shooters.

The FT shooting is back to being a big problem after a stretch in January where it was slightly better. Missed front-ends, completely empty trips... Yikes. But then Eugene hits two clutch ones and makes up for it.

When two very good defensive teams show up this is the kind of game you’re going to get. I still say it’s not that Northwestern didn’t play well, we forced them not to play well. And they did the same to us. We aren’t a good offensive team so good defenses are going to make us look bad. We played very well defensively and we controlled the boards. We won this game, and forced Northwestern to lose it.

Anytime you limit the opponent to 5 offensive rebounds you are definitely controlling 1 of the glasses

Yup I had to run before finishing my post but I was going to say killed them on the boards and in effort.

Shooting, defense, taking care of the ball, free throw shooting, rebounding, effort.

We basically won yesterday with 3/6. We're a very dangerous team if we can get 4 or 5 in the same game.
