College visit, or just a vacation?
Assuming you have LA and SF covered.
1. Take as much of the Pacific Coast Highway as you can up the Coast.
2. Santa Barbara
3. Big Sur/Carmel Highlands/Point Lobos State Natural Reserve
4. Carmel by the Sea
5. Monterrey
6. Santa Cruz
7. Felton, Ca- you can take a steam locomotive from Santa Cruz to Felton

17mile drive Monterey Peninsula
Stanford U in Palo Alto (little bit inland from coast) --if you like seeing college campuses its incredible
Santa Cruz Boardwalk (cheesy but fun)

Also I checked the SF Pride Parade is June 29th and 30th. I hear that's a great event for kids and their parents.

It probably is a great event for LGBTQ kids, parents of LGBTQ kids and people who are not homophobic.
Parades and rallies in general can attract strange people and troublemakers. I hear a camera man was attacked at a MAGA rally recently. But as to gay pride parades, those that go know what to expect and seem to enjoy themselves, while those that would be bothered by flamboyant displays of pride may want to avoid. It's a free country.

Lots of great suggestions already.Pacific Coast Highway (Route 1) is the obvious choice for a totally amazing trip. I would give that two days to do it right (stop overnight either in San Luis Obispo or Monterey areas). If pressed for time, try US-101. Still a really nice trip; can be done in a day.
The shortest trip is on I-5. Route sucks, but you can travel between SF & LA in about 6 hours.

- San Luis Obispo Madonna Inn. Google it. Fun place. Kids may enjoy. Lunch at Big Sky Cafe.
- On Highway 1 a little North of Hearst Castle is an elephant seal viewing site (at Ragged Point). Cannot recommend this enough. Its right off the highway.
- Personally, I would skip 17 Mile Drive. Overpriced and overrated. Go to Capitola and have a bit to eat at one of the restaurants on the beach. Its the best beach in NorCal. NorCal beaches are very different than the Jersey Shore.
- In San Francisco, rent bicycles and ride over the GG Bridge. If not so energetic, ride (downhill) to Sausalito. Have lunch and take the ferry back. If energetic, ride on to Tiburon. Have lunch at Sam's and take the ferry back.
I've planned trips for people doing the drive from LA to SF. It is better driving north on PCH because you are on the inside of the two-lane highway with no guard rails. Go around one of those hairpin turns with a huge mobile home coming at you is not fun, so I'd rather be on the inside! As far as stops go:

I would not know, as I never attended one of the parades or cared to look at pictures. If naked people are part of the parade or crow, not good for kids to see.
Living in Ca., it's almost impossible not to see photos. Naked dudes is the least of it. It's deranged. Since you say you don't know, I'd refrain from offering advice on what it is.
Please do a quick search whomever is curious. It is eye opening to say the least. LOLOL
Small town on Rte. 1 called Cambria. It has a house called the NitWit Ridge that's worth a look. Cambria is artsy with plenty of restaurants. Just south of Hearst Castle.

If you're leaving LA driving though Santa Monica, and Malibu do a quick lap through Pepperdine University's campus. It sits up on the hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Yo can drive through the whole campus in 10 minutes.

A relative of mine is gay and I've met many of his friends that are G or L and I would say none of them would participate in anything outlandish. Everyone is a highly paid
professional and a few of the couples have children who are very well taken care of.
Back in the 1970 when Battle of the Network Stars was on TV they filmed it at Pepperdine IIRC. I always said I wanted to go there for school. Alas...
Yes, and I referenced in another post that parades and rallies can tend to bring out a lot of bad actors. For example, several Puerto Rican people I know would never go to the Puerto Rican day parade in NYC. I think that some of the other ethnic parades have similar bad reputations. For the OP, I doubt he/she wants to get caught up in the traffic, etc associated with ANY parade.
