Locks is a great recruiter, but bad coach. At least who Maryland hires in 2-3 years will have good players to start with

Everyone knows that he is an elite recruiter who sucks at coaching, just like Franklin at PSU. Franklin had a rough time until he hire a better staff and let them do everything and PSU been good since. So if he hires a good staff who can coach then Maryland will be very good.

Jury is out on Franklin sucking at coaching. That is a popular narrative.
With the loss of Moorhead and Barkley and McSorley being hobbled, Penn State took a step back this year. But they are stocked with talent, and it will be interesting to see if they are elite this year or middle of the pack.

The last 12 years, no matter who the coach or no matter their record, Maryland has always been able to recruit 4 star players. Maryland have always kept some of their 4 stars at home.

4 or 5 star recruits

2013 5
2014 4
2015 3
2016 4
2017 7
2018 6
2019 3

Wasn't everyone going crazy over how good MD was going to be because of the last hire and all the former HCs he added to his staff?

They get the recruits but no one knows how to coach. There were years where their entire offensive line could have been 4 stars but no results.

Rather have a coach that can take a 3 star and coach him up than a 4 star that plays down.

Agree.

Mike and James are similar in some ways and not in others (dont feel like writing too much about the history).

But yes, Mike should hire a great OC / DC staff.

I do think MD will recruit VERY well for the talented DMV 2020 and 2021 classes.

THe MD Admin will have to be patient with Mike since he will shuffle his staff like all do year over year to develop his talent. His track is of a recruiter HC like James and Dabo.

Not entirely true. MD has the worst luck of QB injuries. This is not up for debate-- even national writers now make fun of the issue.

If MD finds even a good enough QB, who will not get hurt then its a program that can give the elite some fits and be a solid program...remains to be seen though.

Also in the past DEadsell had no depth. Lox recruited DIggs for him but Edsall just was horrible and Durkin had the McNair issue.

But recently, MD did beat Texas TWICE and pretty much Ohio State--- means they have talent but need more depth and fix QB issues. How can people so easily forget?

grab the number 4 safety in the country. Number 55 player. I really don’t feel we will be competitive until a change is made.

THe much bigger recruit for MD was Lance Legendre. 4 star and true stud meant to go to FSU from the south.

For Mike to flip him at the last moment for MD is some IMMENSELY IMPRESSIVE.

Also MD desperately needs a QB. They have some talent but none at QB.

As I said, MD needs to figure out the QB spot and they could move past MSU (depends on if they can).

I do think MD will start to recruit better than MSU so now its up to the QB and OC/DC.

yes MD is the school we should emulate--their recent past is so enviable --somehow the new regime is a world beater before they even play a game
I like RUs record against power five schools by Ash better! last year he didnt beat..one!
Maryland is light years ahead of RU in recruiting and facilities for football.
Locksley,we shall see what he does coaching game day.

So a local 4-star kid being sought after by the big boys, AFTER signing day, decides to stay home? Am I the only one thinking this kid never sees the field of play?

Agree with the bolded 100%.

2nd part of the 2nd sentence...we’ll see.
Maybe I should ask @Zombo NJ , but what exactly does that mean, and how does RU fix them? Obviously one fix is to fire the head coach and hire a proven winner. But what other issues are "in the mirror"?

I say go get Harley and pay him what the NFL is paying him! He was by far the best recruiter in RU history!

really?
lets us know when one appears on the Rutgers sideline..
There have been a few...Burns, Greg, even Terry Shea a bit.
I never said the current guy. You all just jump to conclusion. My comment was coaching generic. You and the others turned into something else.

And that's what you've got?
Vs. What?

I gather you think that was in defense of Ash. Haha. You're WRONG.

BTW..lets have some fun ....go back last 20 years and tell me all the Rutgers 4 stars and how they all shook out here? Wanna start with ...

Ricky Cookes
Savon Huggins

Take it from there...if not, ill give you a list later on tonight...

Point to be made, however, is Maryland, despite their recent past, got a 4 star safety to flip from FSU after an official visit to Penn State.
When was the last time Rutgers beat out Penn State for a recruit?

These are facts that RU fans who want to stay the course don’t want to discuss, to say the least.

If RU got a 4 star safety to flip from FSU to us there would be lots of RU bloviating going on here. But because it’s Locksley and Maryland we can act like there’s nothing happening here.

Check.

Not completely correct. This does not look at the whole picture. Yes, the DMV recruits do not look down up UMD as much. BUT the elites still left under Fridge and Edsall-- a bit less under Durkin.

The main hit against what your picture is the sheer lack of recruiting AFTER those stars. Basically, MD had some four stars and a bunch of guys who should not be D1 (basically 1 or 2 stars).

To put it simply, you need a bunch of high 3 stars AND those 4-5 four stars to compete in the East. The whole roster matters. MD left ZERO depth after a few stars brought in by Lox. And that is why MD has failed.

But Durkin started to get depth. Again how else do you beat Texas 2 years in a row and pretty much OSU? Not magic. It is about talent but need more depth and a QB who does not get injured.

My projection is that MD needs 2 more years of high quality high 3 stars and some 4 stars to compete (if things break right). Mike also has alot of connections in the south / Florida for high 3 stars and speed. He is not going to just rely on DMV.

ps-- Delany truly needs to break up the East. It will help OSU/Mich to RUtgers get easier schedules and more bowls. This division does not do anyone favors.

IMO their football facilities are a big attraction for some the higher end talent.

Didn't read through the whole thread but Durkin recruited really well by Maryland's standards. They should make a bowl this year I don't recall a mass exodus of players during this horrible situation.

'Nuts this kid is legit....

I’m not saying he isn’t..,but WHY Is he signing late, and why did he stay at home, I’m assuming there are circumstances that were not familiar with, which sometimes leads to not quite the career than is expected. I could be 100% wrong, however, just throwing it out there!
