----The two that were brutal were the ones on Harper then Baker. Pretty sure they were back to back when we were trying to break that 8 point deficit and they pushed it back to 10 both times. Those definitely hurt, but we had our chances...missing layups and free throws hurt a lot more than the refs did
It’s funny that some people here are defending the referees. I looked at the Michigan board. They were posting things like “Man these refs are trash, for once in our favor.” Another said that there were at least four or five ridiculous calls in Michigan’s favor. Another said that he thought before tonight that Michigan was the only team that got screwed at home by the referees. A couple of their posters pointed out that Michigan got a couple of bad whistles too, but nobody said that it evened out.
Several also said that they really like this Rutgers team and would root for them when not playing Michigan.

Not going to harp on tonight or any individual game, just something more general.
This board (and Carino now) keep pushing the "foul calls were even so officiating was good" narrative. It doesn't work like that. Odds are, over a long period of time with a large sample size, the foul calls between Rutgers and opponents would be roughly equal. In an individual game (or few individual games), it IS possible that there would be a justifiably wide gap between foul calls.
Basically, stop with the "17 vs. 18 fouls" type comments, because they're pointless at a single game level. It doesn't mean the refs did their job properly just because they evened out the number of calls, when maybe the opponent was actually fouling more.
the only call I saw go in RU favor was Mathis getting fouled on his dunk. Multiple bad calls to open the half, 2 on Harper and one on Geo. and Geo's drive late was a BS call. The canadian kid obviously grabbed Geo's arm before Geo threw him off.
and what about Eugene's foul toward end of first half? that ref was the one with the emphatic gesture signaling Michigan ball when it went off Carter. That guy was horrible. the other 2 seemed fine.
Officiating didn’t seem as terrible as the OSU game with the exception of the opening few minutes. What continues to infuriate me is the completely arbitrary decisions to call moving screens. Johnson got called for 1 which looked like a decent call but UM was running picks and hip checking (just like Wesson in the OSU game) the entire game and never got called for it once. Especially #15. Rutgers permiter D is poor enough but that just makes it worse. Either call them consistently or don’t call them at all.
The foul on the Johnson screen was garbage. The M defender acted like an Italian soccer player and the ref bought it hook, line and sinker.
Except it was a moving screen - the sell job just drew attention to it. You can't set a screen, then back up into the defender and make contact. Did the defender oversell that contact? Yeah - but Johnson definitely set a moving screen and got called for it.
We got two phantom fouls that I saw - both on shot blocks at the rim, one on Baker and one on Harper. They also got a phantom foul on a similar play.
Kiss got away with a couple of offensive fouls, as did Omoruyi, both using their off arm to make space. We got away with a few obvious reach ins, a couple of other moving screens, and some aggressive contact under the basket. I remarked several times during the game that "wow, got away with one there"... only to feel like they "got it back" a few plays later on a call in their favor.
Many of the "questionable" calls in real time turned out to be spot on when I rewound the DVR and played it back.
I felt the officiating in the OSU game set a tone that allowed OSU to get away with murder for most of the first half and allowed Wesson to go off - I didn't feel that the officiating did that for Michigan. They made some very hard shots and couldn't seem to miss in the early going, while we were missing bunnies and making mistakes - by the time our intensity ratcheted up and their shooting cooled off, we were 15 points behind.
Although I thought overall it was pretty fair last night there was no contact on the Johnson call.Except it was a moving screen - the sell job just drew attention to it. Eugene O on a layup with 7 minutes to go puts the defender under the basket with his forearm. Kiss on an obvious hook a few minutes later and they call it on Simpson.
Missed calls both ways . Michigan got to the 10 foul mark in 2nd Half.
They didn't decide the game-----Michigan is just very good.
But the ref who called it did so from 35 feet away running back from mid court.
Although I thought overall it was pretty fair last night there was no contact on the Johnson call.
I am on vacation in aruba and don’t have time to detail every call. But:
1) how about the Michigan fans on line (link above) who said that they thought we were getting bad whistles? When the opponent fans say we are getting screwed...
Yea i didn’t go back but sticking the rear end out almost makes it automatic to your point.Go watch it again. He clearly set a screen, then backed up toward the defender as he ran around him, and his butt made contact with the defender's arm - it doesn't get more textbook than that. Now, can an argument be made that we got no advantage from the foul, and a ref should have let it go? Sure - but can't argue it wasn't a moving screen. Johnson needs to know better than to do that.
I think a lot of it was because Geo didn't really "use" the screen, and Johnson was trying to get some contact that wasn't going to come unless he backed up. If Geo had dribbled more closely to Johnson and forced his defender to fight through the screen, Johnson probably wouldn't have moved backward in an attempt to screen the defender.
Ticky tack? Maybe. But totally a legit call.
Legit call but call all the illegal picks on Michigan all night they were either sticking out there shoulders or there legs; The refs were supposed to be keying in this this year obviously they forgot that in this game rewatch it you will see; not to mention how many moving screens they setGo watch it again. Agree ISU was even more blatant these were more suttle but the refs were supposed to be emphasizing this and they obviously have forgotten our players need to act a little more when they get picked off illegally !!Legit call but call all the illegal picks on Michigan all night they were either sticking out there shoulders or there legs; The refs were supposed to be keying in this this year obviously they forgot that in this game rewatch it you will see; not to mention how many moving screens they set
OSU I saw them constantly - didn't see nearly as many against Michigan. I'll try to take another look.
----
on the replay of the foul on Geo, you could see he used his arm down low to slightly push the defender....that was a really critical call, if the play went on, he might have scored or been fouled himself...."
