I know the financial pitfalls, but remember:
1. Experience playing together in competitive environments - even the CBI - will help this young squad;
2. Shaq Doorson. Doesn't he deserve to play in the post season, even the CBI?

THat being said, of course, I'll take the NIT/NCAA over the CBI. I just don't think it should be dismissed out of hand.

Absolutely NOT. We're a Big Ten team.

Beggars can't be choosers, but CBI has never been anything to aspire to for me.

Gives the team extra practice time too right. Not sure what the reason is to be opposed to it even if it doesn't get you pumped

I'm always in favor of more basketball. Don't think Pike would allow it to be a waste of time.

After playing two solid months of nothing but B1G competition, it might not be a bad idea for a young team like us...if we could pull it off.

I go back to the day when the NIT really mattered, and still think it has a heritage and value. But these other events with no history and no tradition...no thanks. Especially if you’re a Big 10 team and can’t get an invite in the top 96, just get in the gym and start the off-season development.

Don’t mean to be condescending or have a superior attitude regarding Rutgers and these events. Just to be clear, I don’t like them, period. They are “made-up” events, and as an old-school guy they have a “participation trophy” feel to me. Not a fan.

It's just basically the same thing as a college football bowl game outside of the CFP. If it extends our season 2 weeks and gets us 3-4 more games, that's great. 3-4 more games of experience for the young guys and we'd get some more home games too which would be fun

Any postseason tournament would be beneficial to the men's hoops team..

Look at football, I remember either Ash or McNulty saying how important making a bowl game (please no comments on that) and just for the fact that means they won at least six games. It is also important because it means extra practice and development.

The same goes for basketball or any sport.

Disagree. We will have played around 30 games against Power 5 and High Major (Big East) competition at the end of the Big Ten Tournament against big time players in big time settings. Playing games in a tournament against weaker competition in empty, unenthusiastic settings has no benefit. Hit the books and finish the academic semester strong and work on your body. If I were a player, I wouldn't want anything to do with playing in a third rate tournament just to extend practice time for 2 weeks having been going full bore since October 1 not to mention all of the other off season workouts. If it was that important and was so valuable, all power teams would be eager to play but they're not.

Take it in a heartbeat and start only the freshman and Shaq cause it'll be his last college games. Let Baker and Eugene sit out completely and be sideline coaches..let them police the young guys and only add in what they miss.

It's situational, to me. If you have an upperclassman-laden team, especially one that's been in the postseason recently, it's not going to do much to move the needle.

But a team of mostly freshmen and sophomores, who have been growing game to game with each other, to get a chance for as many as 6 more games worth of live reps in a tournament setting? That could be invaluable for next year.

1170/2000 min this year in conference play (59%) have been from players suiting up for Rutgers for the first time this year and 1502/2000 min (75%) have come from freshmen or sophomores.

Over the last two years, about 25% of the CBI teams have finished between 81-131 in kenpom, which has been our neighborhood.

Do we really think the players would want to play in a 16 team tournament against joke teams while the NCAA tournament was going on? There was a post about Strickland of Wisconsin having to play in garbage time. This would not be much different. The CBI tournament is a joke. Don't equate low tier bowls with CBI games. No one is filling out a CBI bracket.

Any tournament is made up then. 2k classic, pre season NIt, and of the holiday classics. I’ll take the tourney because any chance to add wins to the record is a good thing!

I do.

You gotta understand, basketball is fun. These kids are always looking to hoop. Some of these kids will literally go to werblin after the season ends just to run some pickup games. Basketball players thoroughly enjoy playing the game. I remember after the 2012 season playing with myles mack and mike poole at college ave gym just regular old open gym.

That's different than traveling (which we wouldn't) and having practices and curfews, etc. I could have sworn a few years ago we were in a position like this and team said no.

NIT seems like a somewhat realistic possibility. I think if we can get to around 8 or 9 conference wins?

Only 6 teams in the last 4 seasons have made the NIT with just 17 wins. To even get to 17 wins, we'd need to win 5 of our next 10 games. If we don't beat Top 10 Michigan on Saturday, that would mean we'd need to win our other 3 home games and pick up 2 more road wins. And even then, it's a very unlikely shot at being one of the 17-15 teams picked because of the Fordham loss.

But last year, we didn't have the number of freshman that we do this year - most of the team was departing or were upperclassmen. If any year were a good opportunity for it, it'd be this one.

Can't you travel in the summer once every X years and play competition overseas? Much, much better use of $

I say we take any post season tournament if offered. We need to continue to get experience in games. jamie Dixon was winning over 20 games a year and the year he was I think 16-16 they went to the CBI and won it and finished with 20 or 21 wins. Of course I would rather see us make the NCAA or NIT but the CBI is still better than sitting home. I love our games and always go into withdrawal when the season ends. This could extend the season.
