HUGE HUGE HUGE WIN

There was a thread posted recently about this being the biggest game in Pikiell's tenure here and I agreed that it was. Not because it was a must win but simply because this was a game changer...a program changer. RU needed to win this game to do something that showed concrete evidence that its not the same ole Rutgers. How many times in the past few years or quite frankly even back to Waters and Bannon would a RU program get a big win at home and then follow it up by losing to inferior competition on the road. How many times did the program fail to take that next step forward. Well today they did it. Its a leap forward that is significant for more than just one win. Its a statement. When a program is being rebuilt or built in this case, there need to be as many turning the corner game as you can get....already this season RU has 3 of them...OSU, Nebby and now PSU. They all are independently important because they represent something new for the Pikiell era and that we have two of these consecutively confirms that this program is on the right path now after stumbling for a few games.

Just some history here...RU reaches 3 wins in league the earliest since being in the Big 10, wins consecutive regular season games for the first time ever, only their 2nd Big 10 road win ever. RU now finds themselves tied for 9th place in the Big 10...are you kidding me? 9th place..yes its a 4 way tie but consider who they are tied with...Nebraska who has two NBA players, storied Indiana, and Northwestern. Those are step forward and setting up an opportunity for another leap forward vs Indiana at the RAC this week.

For those who participated in the game thread, the consensus was this game was in the bag....NOT. We were all really nervous in that thread. For starters, Penn State SUCKS...and yes I really mean that. ..this is probably the worst Chambers coached team that I have seen since RU entered the Big 10. It was clear from watching that Rutgers was the better team, had the better talent and the better coaching. Thats why so many of us were frustrated with the sloppy play today. RU dictated the pace but seemingly shot themselves in the foot everytime they had an opportunity to pull away. Consider that RU shot 35% and committed 14 turnovers, played middling ball overal but still won a road game.

This was not a pretty game at all. But who cares, when the game is over no one cares how sloppy it was and hard to watch, everyone cares about the scoreboard and who made the plays to win the game. RU only made 3 fg in the last 10 minutes yet still won the game....all 3s...Caleb, Geo, and Harper. However they made 10 free throws in 14 attempts. RU simply won the game by going to the line and making them...what a contrast to some other games like Northwestern which poor free throw shooting torpedoed this team. Eugene was 4-4 and Geo added 4....and all of theirs came in pressure situations where they simply had to make them given the tenuous 2-3 point lead. Its funny after some sloppy play, it was the two leaders who stepped forth in the end game settling the team down and taking control. Geo was a force on offense today. 2nd game in a row and thats going a long way to negate that criticism that he wasnt a legit Big 10 talent. Baker had 20 points on 7-15 shooting, 2-6 from 3. Tied at 51, Geo had 6 consecutive points for RU including a big time 3 that gave RU just enough seperation to go up 57-53. Eugene warrior as always, played some great defense throughout especially in that first half taking charges, He struggled offensively but his made free throws sealed the deal. Credit to him because this was a tough game overall for him, 2-9 shooting, 4 rebounds, he is not 100% and it seems like his frustration was coming out. He was trying to do too much at times, forcing some shots, some rough ball handling and maybe trying to flop too much. Yet when it counted he gathered himself and produced....7-8 at the line is a winning number.

Montez Mathis had 8 in the first half, hit the first basket of the 2nd but seemed to be quiet in the 2nd half. Not sure but I believe there must have been some adjustment Chambers made on him, if anyone can help me out. I know he limped after one play so dont know if he was a bit gimpy later in the half. That is simply going to happen though. You cant expect Montez to just sail through games without being keyed on. His first half scoring and presence on defense was just as much a part of this win as Geo/Eugene even with the 2nd half struggle. And he did make that final foul shot that made it academic. Mathis also had like 3 critical rebounds in the last 4-5 minutes of the game that prevented 2nd chance opportunities by the Nittany Lions. As for the rest of the team...not their best but the takeway is that they didnt have to..they needed to play their roles. Harper, Caleb, Kiss all hit big 3s in a game where every possession seemed to count as 3 or 4 possesions. Shaq Carter flat out struggled making bunnies yet he converted an old fashion 3 point play at a time where RU lost its lead and stopped a 11-2 PSU road. Note he also had 7 boards. These guys all stepped up in big spots. Today was not going to be Myles Johnson's day as an offensive threat. PSU had the size to create difficulty in getting the pass into Myles but he did seem to get his hand on some balls and played solid D. And Myles did contribute a nice bucket at the end of the first half. As for overall team defense, I thought the RU effort was very good. Let's note that RU held Penn State to just 2 fgs the last 10 minutes of the game and held sway in a couple of critical possessions at 58-57

I think Pikiell gets some props for that inbound play after the Caleb timeout with Harper getting the ball to Geo. At 62-60, RU couldnt afford a flub there and it was important to get Geo to the line even though he only made one of two.

So overall, when you consider how young RU is, consider how limited they are on offense, how they do not have a 100% Eugene, it becomes even more striking that they finished and closed out this game despite not playing their best. But we need to remember that. We see the win over Nebraska and we think that going into Penn State should be no issue. In hindsight its a big issue for a young team...its a huge hurdle that past incarnations of Rutgers have never seized. This team is different. They are reaching for rarified air in this program...did they call it the left side in the Rice era? RU is on the precipice of crashing the party in the Big 10 standings. Thats what happens when you start winning.

Very important for the young guys to learn how to "gut out" a win on the road. I don't even care that PSU stinks, or that the Bryce Jordan Center is a mausoleum. It's still a road game, and PSU plays very good defense (we could barely get the ball inside, and the Nits seemed to have hands everywhere).

This is another game where somebody different stepped up - seems like it's somebody different every game. Against Nebraska, it was Mathis and Johnson (with Baker a close third), today it was Baker (with Gene helping out down the stretch with defense and FTs).

The sign of a good team is getting contributions -- however small -- from lots of guys, and we got that in spades today. Mathis helped on offense with 8 points (including two 3-pointers) in the 1st half. Kiss, McConnell and Harper all hit clutch threes in the 2nd half. Carter gets that huge old fashioned three when we really needed a score to stop a run. Gene plays some tough defense on Stevens down the stretch after Stevens was torching us earlier in the half.

Yeah, this game was ugly, but I kept telling my son during the game that I didn't care if we shot 25% and won by 1 point -- winning on the road in this league (any league) is difficult.

Now the team needs to focus and not get caught up in the hype of possibly winning three games in a row, with the third coming against a storied Indiana program. Keep grinding.

BAC good post. I was not so sure we would win this game, because of the very reasons you stated in your post. And we know that the B1G is arguably the best league in the country and ANY win on the road is a good win.

Now I realize the BJC is a terrible place to play BB and the PSU fans really don't come out and support their team. The reason for my concern was how well PSU played against Minnesota in the Barn, where they almost won and we got blown out. So, I was hoping for a win, but was still concerned that getting that first road win would be tough. As I said in other posts, I'll take an UGLY win any day over a pretty loss or a moral building loss. We now have 2 straight B1G wins and 3 wins overall, and this is the earliest we have ever done that. If somehow this young team can pull out 3 more B1G wins before the B1G tourney, I will consider this year a huge success as we move forward.

It’s about a young team learning how to win...

This was a game that we outplayed them but didn’t finish a lot of makable shots that let them hang around ...which could have been a 9-13 point win

Yet...we learned to grind out a win when the bunnies didn’t drop and we could have lost focus

Times are changing fast...and this week coming up is a great opportunity to build on it and show that we belong with the teams that has us as a 5 way tie for 9th place in the big ten

I thought RU played spotty but consider 7 of 16 from 3 on the road and a couple were up against the shot clock, which makes the 3s taken, for the most part, good shots.

The one item that was floated out there prior to the game by Jerry Carino, was RUs next 2 opponents are both on 6 game losing streaks.

In some ways, it's not a false statement but just speaks to in some ways, a slight or backhanded compliment towards what is a reason why RU is potentially going to win.

Even on an ice cold streak, PSU at home can play a good game and it's still Indiana, with a 1 and done PG and strong players in most spots. The B1G will cause any team a losing streak not named Michigan or Michigan State.

This is not about whether the opponent is playing well or not...this is about RU making progress with a bunch of underclassmen and learning how to win, in a difficult league.

Keep in mind, Ohio State won at Nebraska and Illinois took out Maryland at MSG today. There's no free lunch in the B1G anywhere this year, even at PSU.

And it's not like Eugene isn't at 55 to 60% and winning at Miami earlier in the year, also doesn't matter. It does and with games on the road at Ohio State, at Illinois at Michigan State, at Northwestern, at Iowa, and at Indiana plus the B1G tournament in Chicago...RU is gaining valuable points and experience playing on the road in these spots. It all helps to get a road win, just to show the frosh, it can be done.

A couple of these may get ugly like Minnesota and Purdue but winning today, but one game at a time...on to Indiana....

I predicted a win vs PSU

largely because I felt our :boom:FABULOUS FROSH:boom:
knew they would be keyed on for the 1st time(montez and Long Beach Johnson in particular)
and that would take the pressure off GEO

Its always sweet to get a win vs Penn State but even SWEETER @ :uzi:pSU:uzi:
[cheers]A SWEET ROAD WIN[cheers]

Definitely a sloppy game but guys are finding their ways into roles. The freshman are gaining tremendous experience. Everything that is happening right now is really huge for the 2019-2020 season. Were going to bring back a group very comfortable playing with one another plus a spark plug like young and a saavy floor general like mulcahy who will be able to distribute. Im enjoying the moment and the build but next year man, next year could be the year we truly actually turn the corner

I like how we won this game not playing our best and winning 50/50s.

If both teams shoot the basketball from 3 at their normal % we lose by a few points. PSU got a lot of good looks that they didn't make.

I love the win and am proud of the team. I'd have the same feeling had we lost by 4 and PSU made 3 more 3 pt FG

Great recap. The notion that Baker is not Big10 caliber was rediculous even before his recent hot streak. (And, Bac I realize you were not the one saying that). The Big 10 announcers and the guys back in the studio were raving about Geo. The haters were, and are clueless.

The team still needs a consistent 3 point shooter added to the roster and improved scoring by the returning players to get the scoring average over 70 points per game. The B1G is a monster conference with lots of parity and there are no easy games unless you are Michigan or Michigan State.

My son and I were at the Bryce Jordan Center yesterday sitting behind the Rutgers bench.

The attendance announced on the scoreboard was over 13k.

Seemed like there were plenty of families attending and the upper bowl mid court was open.

The rest of the upper bowl had the black bunting.

World be a sweet weekend if the RU women best the Nits this afternoon.

Go RU!

Heres the thing, next year a lot of pressure is going to come off Geo with Jacob Young added to the lineup. I know it’s only one player but I suggest going back and watching some of his later season film at texas. The guy is an unbelievable defender. To the point where Geo will be able to not exert as much energy on D and get away with guarding the #3 scoring threat at times when he, young and tez are on the court together. Young also has a quick first step and can get into the lane and kick to geo for 3 when the D collapses which will lead to more open 3’s for Geo. Geo’s shooting 36% from 3 right now and barely getting any easy/open looks too. When he starts getting open looks, I expect that number to climb into the low 40’s, a TREMENDOUS % from deep. And then once teams recognize that, they wont be able to collapse when tez and young go to the cup giving them easier shots as well. Next year is exciting

What this game demonstrates is the importance of shooting threes well , making your free throws and playing good defense. If you can do that then you can compete against any team. Hitting threes has become such a critical part of winning basketball and Rutgers needs someone who can consistently hit the open three.

Sorry but I can't agree with your last statement. Had they lost I think the feel good nature of this thread would have been entirely different. As others have mentioned, a bad win is better than a good loss but there would have been plenty to question about yesterdays performance had the outcome been different.

Most encouraging things I took away from yesterday was making FT's down the stretch and 3pt shooting % overall. I thought the effort was good throughout but a lot of mistakes that you just cannot make against a better team. EO is a gamer for being out there but he had a stretch where he was just hurting us. Geo was very good for the most part, but when he dribbles too much and the others just stand around it does not normally lead to a good offensive trip down the court.

The freshman are probably going to be somewhat inconsistent all year. Montez is has been on a good run and stands out but I think we are starting to see more positives than negatives from Myles, Caleb and Ron as well. Just not at the same level. I expect Pike will give them a frank assessment of the overall performance and that will be a good thing going to into Wednesday nights game.

Kudos to Baker for having a very fine game and making some big shots. But was he taking good shots? It seemed to me that many of his shots were low percentage forced shots made in desperation as Baker tried to generate some offense when others couldn't. Yesterday against PSU enough went in unlike past games when he seemed to be in a shooting slump . Against PSU Rutgers bigs were far less effective in the paint than they were against Nebraska which placed a greater burden on Mathis and Baker to score . PSU actually played good defense and their height neutralized our bigs.

Agree with the PSU bigs in the paint..did a good job clogging around the basket and Carter couldnt finish and then we basically stopped going there. PSU would double team Baker or another ball handler at times but RU was struggling somewhat to find the open man...the times they did they were successful.

One awful play was that one possession where Geo and Gene looked like they were dribbling a greasy square ball...the ball handling was downright atrocious

Massive win
Very sloppy and looked a bit lost against the press, but everyone stepped up here and there
Harper drilled a much needed 3
Geo knocked down FT at the end
Coaching was fantastic...drawing up a good inbounds play under 15 sec
Great all around w

Rufeelinit,

I agree with your assessment about how most fans would have felt about a loss. Unfortunately most fans have a very shallow way of looking at things. Making 4 out of 7 3s vs 2 out of 7 3s says almost zilch about the progress of the program. Defending hard most possessions, getting back on D, sharing the basketball and winning most 50/50s tells you 10X more.

The ability to shoot is what will take us to the next level. Analyzing performance of 1 game out of 10 where we shoot it better than normal and our opponent does the opposite isn’t a gauge on where we are. No doubt though it, along with what I mention above, is why we win.

My concern going forward is the lack of consistent scoring from the front court. With the injury to Eugene which has hampered his mobility it will be difficult to even get 30 points from the front court which means the total points will be getting closer to 60 rather than 70 points.Of course, every game is a new challenge based on the opponents defense and where the game is played.
