PSU BB revenue is twice RU's ???? And their expenses are less? Just don't add up to me.

Accounting is a beautiful thing when you want it to be. But without looking at how PSU does theirs versus how we do ours, we have spent money on coaches' buyouts, RAC improvements (new scoreboard, A/C, and whatever else we've done), and monies allocated for the new practice facility. We are in a growth-spend phase, so our expenses should look higher than most other schools that already have respectable facilities and haven't fired their coaches in the last few years.

Yeah, the OSU coach's buyout from Butler is higher than his salary.

Interesting article - but one thing that was left out that I've seen mentioned over the years is that basketball is a sport in which the best players come primarily from urban centers. Many of those players don't exactly feel at home in the bucolic Nittany Valley far from anything very familiar to them.

I would normally agree with this but Iowa, Wisconsin, and sort of Purdue have amazing teams with tall, midwestern farm boys that can shoot the 3 lights out and play big man D

The RAC only holds 8000 seats far smaller than other B1G arenas.
Exactly why they have to reinvent the RAC when new facilities are open.. They need to expand that open lobby end that seats like 75 people and expand to at least 1000-1500. They need to put permant seats in the student section and increase by another 500 at least. They can very easily turn that arena into a 10-12k arena. It would be absolutely INSANELY LOUD there

Yes and have the students be up to the court again. It’s shame they were shoved back for the dance team

I wonder what the source for those figures are. Without a source, I question the validity

Fine for expenses but what about revenue. I know their place holds 14K but their real attendance is no way near that.

Well let's say we average 6k/game and they average 10k. Over 16 home games that's a difference of 64k seats times $50/ticket, which nets out to $3.2m. Add in concessions and parking, and however they allocate donation, and there's probably at least a $5mm difference. Then the accounting split of the B1G revenue may be factored into their number, which is far greater than ours. PSU's scale is simply much larger than ours in every accounting metric.

I think between the fact that PA doesn't seem to produce as many of these that choose basketball, and the fact that they have a lot of other somewhat local options (sound familiar?), PSU is hard pressed to utilize this phenomenon

I think they could be dangerous with the right coaching hire though. DeChellis and Chambers were not exciting hires. I forget who they had before. Maybe it matters, maybe it doesn't but it's worth noting that Chambers was hired by Tim Curley, he of Sandusky coverup fame and Paterno lineage. Perhaps he didn't understand basketball coaches, opting for boring old white guys because that was the only type of leadership he trusted. It could be that Curley and the old administration were what was holding back their mens basketball program. I'll be watching closely to see if the new regime makes a more sensible hire, in all likelihood starting in about a month and a half.

According to spreadsheet psu total bb ticket rev . was $930k...Total. No way the gap is even $500k on that line item.

Edit: Googled. Last year with NIT, ncaa bubble quality team was 7400 paid ..which they state is really more like 6000 (not sure what that is).

Lol that one issue being noted is the cheap piped in loud arena music which has ruined the college game feel.

I'm going to assume that their 10K per game is largely students. I can't see thousands of locals paying $50 a seat for a mid-week basketball game. They have a captive audience of their student body/faculty.

Here's an article from last year on PSU attendance.
