Much rather listen to Bill Walton than some random guy telling me "They should look to score the basketball right here" (no kidding!) and "Coach told us before the game they wanted to stay out of foul trouble." (oh so like EVERY coach?)

He is a National Treasure. Should be inducted into the broadcast HOF. He's the only reason I even subscribe to the Pac-12 channel.

Russ, how do you rate him as a ball player? Since 1960 he may be in my top 10 all-time NCAA players, and I think had his knees held up he might be in that same category for the NBA.

He may never be on a Final Four broadcast team, but he is a fun and wacky listen, a mid-season treat.

No doubt

His performance against Memphis in the Final was the best I've ever seen.

People forget how good the Blazers were in the Championship year and when he went down the following year they were something crazy like 50-8

I think he was an amazing player. So difficult to defend AND he was an incredible defender himself.

Because of early entries into the NBA draft no one will be a three time national college player of the year like Walton was. Even if there weren't early entries I don't know if it would happen again.

Very unfortunate that he had foot injuries that derailed his pro career.

Anthony Davis and Kevin Durant both won it as freshmen.

Durant's year was followed by Tyler Hansbrough and Blake Griffin winning so it might have been tough for him to win all three years.

Davis' year was followed by Trey Burke/Victor Oladipo splitting the award, and then Doug McDermott sweeping it. So I think he could have done it.

Obviously a different time now, and Walton couldn't even play as a freshman, so who knows.

That ‘77 Blazers team was my favorite NBA team ever...Walton, Lucas, Gross, Hollins, and Twardzik with Lloyd Neal and Herm “the Germ” Gilliam off the bench. They passed the ball like no one in their era. It helped that I despised the Sixers except for Dr. J. The Blazers were down 0-2 and won 4 straight.

Walton was the best center I’ve ever seen for one season. Maurice Lucas was the enforcer and the definition of a power forward. Gross did all the little things and the guards were unspectacular but very solid. Walton’s outlet passes led to unstoppable fast breaks.

They got off to a very fast start the next year and then injuries killed it all. Walton was never the same again.

1 game per week is great because it gives team valuable and time to practice fundamental things. The disadvantage is the most popular thread becomes a Pac 10 (conference of champions) basketball announcer

Yeah it's not definitely not a shtick. He plays in a dead style jam band. I live in San Diego and saw him last year in Ocean Beach playing these big *** drums with his hands just jamming out at a street festival
