One on the one hand, we have every single stat along with the fact that Pikiell barely mentions him in interviews and has him competing against a walk-on in 1v1 drills. On the other hand, we have a Basketball Knower insisting he's good because of reasons nobody else can see.

This would be the best year to redshirt Doucoure I would think. He can’t be a total stud with the lift of players in front of him.

0% chance that happens. We don't have the depth of proven players. We may need him to chew up some minutes. The good news about our bigs is they don't need to be superstars. Play productive defense and don't hurt the team with bonehead plays. Easier said than done, I know.

Don't forget that Doucoure also reclassified last season. He was supposed to be a high school senior last year.

I think he re-reclassed. He was supposed to be a 2017 recruit, but had reclassed to 2018.... then reclassed back to 2017 to commit to RU.

This is on Doucoure's bio on scarletknights.com:

This season has to be about moving the neddle offensively. You put your best scoring lineup out on the court within reason (looking defensively)

Our bigs (with includes EO) will NOT play 80 MPG. No way!!! Take it to the Bank!!

The big that plays has to be a good defensive rebounder and a potential rim protector.

Educated guess has Eugene and Carter taking most of the minutes and Myles, Duke and Doorson fighting for a small role.

If Myles or Duke are proficient knocking down 15 footers it would be a huge help and potentially increase slightly the total amount the 5 bigs play.

E0, Shaq Carter. Shaq Doorson, Myles Johnson.

Not sure what you are envisioning as Thiam and Eugene are not playing center. I would be shocked if one of Doorson, Johnson, Doucoure, or Carter is not on the floor at the 5 position at almost all times in almost every game. Eugene will be at 25+ mpg at the 4, so that leaves around 15 mpg to play Thiam or Harper as stretch 4s if he wants to. Behind Eugene, Pikiell will either utilize a stretch 4, or play Carter at the 4 if Carter’s play or the matchup warrants it.

So I could see under 80 mpg from your 5 “bigs” for sure, but never under around 65 mpg.

Issa and Harper get 20 minutes at the 4.....and yes Eugene could log minutes as "the 5".

this assumes all non bigs are ready for B1G basketball and are healthy. If EUgene shows a ton of offensiv improvemtn that changes my thought too

eugene not a lock for 25 MPG

I think he’s a lock for 25+ as captain and emotional leader, and I think if he is listed at 6’7” that is stretching it. He looks shorter than Ron Harper in team photos. He really has the height of a 3 not a 4, but his game is suited to power forward. No way he anchors in the paint as a center or defends opposing centers in the B1G, there’s just no reason to do that. You could play Thiam there if you were desperate and had only 1 scholarship center, but we have 3 or 4 centers.

Just because there is a slight trend towards small ball, it does not mean every team can start doing it . Thiam rebounding against 220 pounders? Freshman Harper? You need proven rebounders this year as we lost our top one this past year. Thiam and Harper playing at the four are not going to provide that.

EO is a lock for 20+ minutes somewhere on the floor.

3-4-5. Not one has the level of physicality that he has shown this summer, and the kind that is needed in the big ten.

For everyone doubting the Eugene at the 5 talk... I'd rather see Doorson/Doucoure/Myles/Carter there as well.

But... uh... last year we went small with Eugene at the 5 in multiple games. It was only for a few minutes at the time, but if I recall correctly it was actually in crunch time.

So it's not just a possibility, it has happened.

Last year though you had 2 scholarship centers, one not in peak form in Doorson and one a 6’9” true freshman who was a foul machine. Night and day to this year.

Edit: Sorry plus you had Sa, but he battled injuries and just wasn’t that effective most of the year.

Yeah, I agree. But I think the reasoning was probably having 5 scorers on the floor. Obviously with Gettys year 1, Pike likes a big man when he can pass and score.

Eugene is also strong enough to play against much bigger guys. Kind of like back in the day when Barkley/Rodman played Shaq better than 7 footers because they were strong enough to keep him out of the lane. (Not saying Eugene is Rodman/Barkley obviously. )

I could see a few minutes at a time in very specific situations. But that's about it.

I am not too concerned about the 5 position or whether it's Doucoure Myles Shaq Carter or Doorson. There's enough depth and competition. I just think there's more positive items to highlight because of how far Myles has moved from last year to this year.

Doucoure in the Minnesota road game looked very good but that was the highlight of his B1G games. I think it's more motivation for Doucoure to have competition vs not.

I just hope he doesnt get discouraged. Whenever anyone says roster turnover is inevitable he's one of the guys I get concerned about.

Turnover is inevitable when teams improve and add depth. The ability to play smaller and pass the ball will bring players up to speed or they will fall out of the rotation.

My initial thoughts are to focus on the kids that have had the longest roads back to this stage....that's Kiss, Myles Johnson and Doorson.....all 3 are unknown quantities vs last year when they didnt or barely played.

The more conservative early approach is to make the more known pieces continue to work quietly like Doucoure, McConnell, Harper Jr, Mathis and Shaq Carter.

I think as training camp moves forward we will see more items on those players, since they figure into the rotation and learning curve for this season.

I am very confident in Myles Johnson being a player that does B1G media day down the road and stays in the rotation all 4 years during this rebuild.

I'm getting the impression that Pike is expecting a lot out of Kiss. Like, better as a starter at the 2 than Geo was last year, while also expecting Geo to match Corey's production in a less explosive but more consistent manner.

The very idea that we have gotten to the point where two 4* recruits, in Mathis and Harper, are unlikely to start and need to fight for time, is a truly positive sign

Harper is the wild card here that can really change the dynamic of the team

If he can be that effective stretch four on offense and be strong enough to match up down low on defense...then I think Eugene is getting some minutes at the five and then 2 of the four bigs (carter, doucoure, Johnson and doorson) won’t see the floor at all.

This seems anecdotal or based on one or two random shots he made. He’s 6’10 and shot 36% from the floor and 60% from the line. Nothing about that screams good form on his shot.
Just bc you have good form and rotation does not make you a good shooter. Good form and rotation are however typically signs of better and more consistent shooters. It's a sign that shows he may improve in those areas. I always heard how raw he was offensively so I was expecting worse honestly.

Do you disagree on the form and rotation?

I agree with you there. Where I diverge is that I think his form and rotation have looked good in shoot around, and we’ve seen plenty of players like this (bigs and guards) over time that can never do it in a game. Having a smooth jumper when wide open with no pressure isn’t all that hard. Ask Issa Thiam. Being able to do it consistently in a game is different. What I’ve been pointing out is that based on his feel for the game, I don’t see him ever making a big enough leap in feel to be considered “wildly skilled.”

He's a freshman big man who skipped his senior year of HS. Can't imagine what you must have thought about Eugene after his freshman season then. I saw massive potential there. Not saying doucoure will be wildly skilled. I said his jumper had better form and rotation than I expected after reports about how raw he was offensively. I agree he does seem to lack a feel for the game but as a true freshman big it's early to write him off for that. He has strength quickness and isn't afraid of contact. It's typical to see young bigs have foul trouble issues. Honestly it seems like he may be behind EO the Shaqs and Myles right now from what I've heard but to me that is more a sign of the depth we have finally.

All my comments have stemmed from a poster calling him wildly skilled and me asking where that comes from- take a look.

I actually thought Eugene would be great because he always seemed to be going hard and getting to good spots even if his end product wasn’t great. His passes were great and his teammates were usually a step behind.
