From the Masters onward they played 9 tournaments head to head:

Phil Mickelson

Masters T36
Wells Fargo T5
Players Cut
Memorial T13
US Open T48
The Open T24
WGC T24
PGA Cut
NT T15

Tiger Woods

T32
T55
T11
T23
Cut
T6
T31
2
T40

Phil finished higher in 5 events and Tiger finished higher in 4.

Tiger had 2 top 10's and Phil only 1.

Phil had 5 top 25's and Tiger had 4.

Tiger missed one cut and Phil missed 2.
Two very inconsistent golfers. Both have serious putting woes. You take both of them. Too much risk.

I agree, but since he already is an assistant, he's there anyway. No real need to play him in the team based matches. Plus his record in those sucks.
As I said above. You can not take Phil and Tiger. They have to choose one of those older, extremely inconsistent players. Phil has better record in the Ryder Cup and has played more than anyone and Tiger hasn't played match play in years.

I agree and I would take Phil. He partners better in the team matches. Better personality. Tiger's record is not good outside of singles.

I think you have to look at Ryder Cup record as well. This is a very different format. At the end of the day, it’s about points and winning.

I think one of the things that made Tiger great also made him a bad partner. Tiger in his prime could spray the Driver all over the place but was more than capable of recovering from just about anywhere. When he'd do that in the Cup his partner couldn't come close to hitting as good a shot.

This weekend will be pretty interesting. If Tiger doesn't make the cut, what does Furyk do, because you know the media pressure will be intense. I still think there is very little downside in taking both Phil and Tiger for the end of the bench slots, but Phil would get the nod based on his solid RC history.

100 person field this week with top 70 and ties making the cut...not sure we'll have to worry about Tiger missing the cut this weekend.

I think the only reason he doesn’t get picked is because of format. His slow starts has to concern Furyk

I think the only way he isn't picked for the Ryder Cup (for better or for worse), is if he tells Furyk that he doesn't want a spot on the team, which no one would expect to happen. Even if he plays like crap for the next couple of weeks, NBC will put a ton of pressure on to select Tiger for the $ and ratings factor for what is ultimately only an exhibition for bragging rights.

Assuming Kuchar isn't on the team as a player, I wouldn't be stunned if he took Tiger's assistant spot.

We are defending champs with tons of talented players. We won without Tiger. There really is no need to have him play due to the format.

This... he will be picked for the team for ratings dollars, and only ratings dollars.

Yes, he gets ratings. The reason he gets ratings is because he is competitive.

He gets ratings because of his name, regardless of where he's at on the leaderboard. When he's shown on Facebook Watch on Saturday mornings when he's 10-12 shots off the lead, the viewership numbers are mindblowingly high compared to when he's not shown on there.

Furyk announces 3 of the 4 Ryder Cup Captain's picks on the Golf Channel tomorrow at 5pm.

DeChambeau is a virtual lock. I'm going with Finau and Phil for the other 2.

Tiger did himself no favors today shooting even par 71. Phil on the other hand shot a 63 keeping him Top 10 in FedEx points at the moment. Finau is having another consistent performance.

The 8 already on the team are Koepka, D Johnson, Thomas, Reed, B Watson, Spieth, Fowler, and W Simpson.

Phil finished ahead of Tiger again to make it 6 times to 4 but yeah Jtung Tiger has played way better as of late.

Much better argument than Phil finished better than Tiger at the NT Open. Doesn’t change the fact Tiger has outplayed Phil down the stretch.

Going into today Tiger was -7, Phil -2. End of day Tiger was -7, Phil -10.

If Tiger doesn't make it he can blame his putter.

DeChambeau another young gun that has now established himself. Also watch out for Cameron Smith. Lot of young talent on the tour.

Bryson, Phil and Tiger are locks to be announced as the next 3 Ryder Cup team tomorrow in Philly. I think Tony Finau gets the final pick and probably will be told that before tomorrows picks are public but will have to wait. Would be a PR disaster if it is done any other way.

Where were you guys yesterday or two days ago? LOL. Congrats to Phil on shooting a 63. Difficult to outplay a 63.

Add yet another Woods slayer to the long list. Congrats to Bryson. Two wins in a row. Hottest golfer in the fame.

Exactly how I think this plays out. still scratching my head over them selecting one guy one week later as if one tournament was ever going to change their minds.

Does it matter?? You are only as good as your last round.
of course it matters. Phil has not finished in the top 10 in his last 10 starts. The context is this. A good Phil can beat a bad Tiger. But a good Tiger can beat the field. BTW, Tiger has 3 top 10s in his last 10 starts.
