And WHY does everyone have NW as an automatic loss?!

Ive read it so much I’m starting to believe it myself. They’re 3pt dogs to Purdue Thursday night! No one knows the outcome (of course), but give me a break. I promise you NW is not coming here, for homecoming no less thinking they have an automatic win. Go RU!

An automatic loss? No. But I'd say they are favored. Fitzgerald always seems to have his team ready to play their B1G schedule. They often have a brain fart loss to a non-league opponent in the first week or two of the season. But their record against the big boys in the league, even losses when looking at how competitive they are, is one that RU should envy at this point.

And they did finish last season ranked 17th in both polls.

NW is an automatic loss unless this squad can prove it to me otherwise during the course of the season.

North western star quarterback , Clayton Thorsen, tore his ACL in the bowl game in December, it is still unknown if he will start tomorrow. He has been practicing. He might be the best quarterback in the big 10 . NW has averaged 10 wins a year the last 3 years. The West however is not nearly as good as the East, obviously .
Our quarterback was in high school last year, threw more interceptions than touchdowns, and was benched fairly quickly .

Bigger question, why would someone classify any of our games as automatic losses or automatic wins? A team that won 3 games the year before and is starting a true freshman at QB, c'mon, it is all a wildcard at this point. Play the games.

So it is an automatic loss unless we win in which case it is not. Got it! Thanks for clearing it up.
Lol. This is my stance until I see otherwise because I’m too scared to get my hopea up and then crushed Monmy

Wow it starts already....he was taken out of games because of injury and his backup got an opportunity and took control of the job and never gave it back, who is also starting in the B1G...

Your narrative is wrong and doesnt need to be spread around here

On any given Saturday.... What do you say we give our young team some support and encouragement. Nothing is automatic.

Personally, I'm looking forward to this Homecoming game. A crisp October day. Returning to the Banks and reuniting with the old crew.

By the way, I say we carry the day and get the "W." But that's me....

Believe what you want. I’m a Rutgers College Grad, 47 year season ticket holder, ex NJSIAA football official, ex player and ex coach. And watched almost every IMG snap last year that was shown online. I hope Sitkowski wins the Heisman and is a 4 year All American. He has a cannon for an arm. But he had 4 interceptions vs 2 TD throws and after his minor injury, rarely saw significant snaps. McNulty needs to coach his propensity for picks, it was still there in the 2 open practices. As a true freshman, he will be severely challenged by BIG 10 secondaries.

They are a dog to Purdue because PU is way overrated because of the lovefest for their overrated coach. Watch if NW does not win that game.

Can we speak intelligently and say probable or likely loss. Automatic construes you do not play the game.

As a Northwestern fan, I don't count any game as an automatic win. Every year we seem to lose one we have no business losing and win one we probably shouldn't have won. I actually think the Rutgers game will be a trap game for us as it comes in the middle of a stretch where we get both Michigans, Notre Dame and Wisconsin. Our season basically hinges on whether Thorson will be healthy enough to play. All our other QBs are rookies, and the schedule will almost certainly kill us if we have to start any of them. We should have good RBs, a decent OL and a strong front seven on defense. NU (that's how we abbreviate it) needs to get off to a better start this year than the past two seasons. We'll see. Good luck to Rutgers.

Well, shoot. Let’s just forfeit it now along with all the other “sure thing” losses.

Sure, we should temper excitement with reality but nothing is EVER guaranteed.

Appalachian State should NEVER beat Michigan...for example.

And hey, I know, Rutgers would NEVER go into Happy Valley and WIN. So what if it was 1988... it’s like saying we could NEVER win in Knoxville....or tie a game in Gainesville...

...or beat the #2 USF Bulls...or beat Michigan State in East Lansing....(hell we should’ve lost to Michigan under the lights our first year in the B1G...)

What would be telling is if, gee golly, we actually beat Northwestern this year to see how many of our pessimists come around saying they KNEW we’d win.

They’re all millionaires, too, for betting on Football out in Vegas...because they’re never wrong.

They have 10 win seasons in the last few years.

They finished the season ranked 17th in the country.

Northwestern has turn themselves into one of the best football programs in the B1G West, but some here still only want to remember them when they used to suck. Those days are long gone!

If Rutgers wins, it would be considered a massive upset by anyone who watches College football.

They are a far better team at this point, but they are also known for WTF loses, so maybe we can be that this season? I hope so, but there is zero I can point to to make me think that will happen. I just hope it does, because I am a Rutgers fan. But, realistically, this is very unlikely to happen.

If RU wins it would not be a Massive upset, but a decent upset. Preseason picks have NW as having a 70% chance of winning. IMO that translate into about a 10 Point Line.

Is there a more crappy large stadium in the country than Beaver Stadium. Not commenting on the fans, team, etc., only the stadium itself, it is just an old and outdated erector set. I am sorry, I have been to almost all of the large stadiums within the last 20 years and I would rank Beaver Stadium near, if not at, the very bottom. There is no intrinsic charm to that stadium it is just old, with all their money they should pick out a new spot and build themselves a proper stadium.
