BTW Bel Air is not only not remotely close to one of the top 100 courses in the country. Its not even top 30 in California.

Again you said it was a top 100 in the US. Its not. Not even top 30 in the State. Like many resturants in LA its a place to be seen. Doesn't make any of them great.

A better question and a serious one is how good is LA CC North? Off the radar since forever but went through a major renovation about 10 years ago and is now a top 25 course in the country. Now at a respectable 7200 yards. Has been selected for a US Open in 2023.

BS. They are absolutely paying. DJ being the latest. The club has many people more wealthy and famous than any pro there. And they are all paying. Where were you a pro, some muni?

They pay there. Like everyone, including Tom Cruise, Nicholson, and so many more. Bel Air doesn’t need touring pros. They go through the same process as everyone. You can’t big shot your way into that group.

Boy did Tiger blow it today. Consistency. Goes with age. Young guys are just too good now.

Did you know Hal was Robert Trent Jones construction supervisor before striking out on his own? Also, Thomas Bendelow was extremely important to spreading golf here in the US back in late 1800s/early 1900s. If you can't tell I am fascinated by golf architecture and always feel like I am battling the designer in a game of chess. Yeah, I guess I am a little weird.

Baltusrol and Pine Valley were the last two clubs in NJ to finally allow shorts.
I’d say about 10 years ago.
Both are still very strict on socks, nothing above the ankle

I just played there this Friday. Had to skip 13 & 14 because the round was getting too long. it's short but all the holes are cut on the 45 degree slope. My only complaint is no range to warm up.

This tournament is really showing the difference. It’s a shot makers course. Next gen is just better. This is an incredible era of golf. For all Tiger accomplished, it was a window between old guys going out and very few guys who could compete. Basically Phil and flavors of the month.

Tournaments are so good now. There are a legit 20 guys that can win.

What time did you go out on Friday? I went out 10:10 and finished at 2:30. Shot a 74 after bogeying the last two. Putting from below the hole is a must at SV. Also, trying to overpower the course usually does not end well.

9:40ish....done by 12:40 after we skipped those 2 holes. Played my fastest round there 2:30 hrs once.

I find the Blue to White non-descript and a little boring. I like the Gold to Red better. I like Farmstead but find it a little easy. Have you ever played Berkshire Valley? First five holes from the tips are so tough. Second hole is a 258-yd par 3 with OB left and right. Course rating is 73.3/133 from the tips.

I have encountered bear on the first 5 holes of Berkshire on at least 5 occasions. One time a mother was sunning with cubs on the 3rd hole...we skipped that hole!!! LOL

No. It's a haul for me to get up there. The guys I used to go up that way to play with are retired and out of state now. Myrtle Beach and Houston. Great golf areas

I was going to guess your home course was Sunset Valley. Next time I play there I will look for you. I just read an article about Hal Purdy in the NJ Golf magazines. However I already knew he designed Rutgers as well as many of the courses I grew up on in Union and Bergen counties.

This weekend showed why it will be tough for Tiger to ever win a big event or a US Open. I don’t feel like going back in this thread but someone challenged my comment that only The Open will be Tiger’s best chance. I don’t see him winning PGA or Masters either. He just doesn’t have the putter anymore.

Berkshire Valley is a fun course. As you said, those first five holes are tough. Bowling Green is owned by my friends family. Nice course as well.

Played the 8th and a mama bear and 2 cubs were rolling around the green. I pretty much always see bears there. Fun and scary at the same time.

He has so many NJ courses on his resume. Many public. Was a very big name back in my early golf years. Loved @wisr01 questions this morning. Knew where he was going right away but liked that Purdy's name was brought up. He played some at Spring Meadow when I worked there, played with Vic Gerard the biggest golf cart supplier in MonmouthOcean Counties back then. Never got much past hello and how are you conversations. Regret not getting into bigger conversations later in life. I was young and not into the golf design part of the business. Wasted opportunity. Vic was a great guy. His son... not so much. No surprise that business declined after Vic Sr. passed.

Decent but short course. Not a fan of that 4th hole. I hit a great drive and reached the green in 2 by some miracle. I hate those gimmicky holes with the huge drops. That may be the largest drop I have seen around here.

Bey Lea was a nice track to play and learn but the 18th was a stupid gimmick hole. Had to lay up before the pond off the tee. With today's improved technology just fly over now. Poorly designed hole.
