Al you still have your head up Schiano’s tucas. How do you know that in the past 2 years going into year 3 Ash hasn’t made headway into his home territory ? You honestly don’t...He has brought in several very good coaches in an attempt to upgrade even though it’s been through attrition.According to Nuts we will begin to see the fruits of his labor in straightening out the cluster F’...k left by Flood with the 2019 class. This was a 5 year build regardless.Sorry if that doesn’t meet with your vision. One comeplete cycle of his recruits.Schiano isn’t coming back ...EVER.

It’s so uninspiring I forgot it.

The hunt for what?
We're knights for God sakes. Our land has been pillaged, we are outnumbered, and backed into a corner. We shouldn't be out hunting for boar. Here's a modo, "Be bold and fight to your death".

Was Chris Ash my first choice no, but I think Coach Ash will get us on a higher level than Schiano ever would have if he had stayed. Schiano would have given us 7-5, 8-4 records every year but he always got out coached and gave us a stinker loss every year. Coach Ash has been on the job for 2 years 2 months, Dec. 2015-Feb 2018. You make it seem like he's been here 3-4 years? 2016 class he barely made an impact, yes 2017 and 2018 are his classes but when you don't have many good upperclassman to learn from, it's hard for your young players to get better quicker. Good example is... Do you want Pike's young front court players learning from Deshawn Freeman, Doorson? That's why Doucoure development is slow going and inconsistent. Yes players develop bad habits from prior coaching into their Jr and Sr year even with new coaches. Good player development always works best when you have Jrs and Srs teaching your freshman the right way that won't happen for another year or 2. That's why it's a process not instant gratification.

As far as the position coaches we will always struggle to keep good coaches till full shares are here and I didn't know it was Chris Ash's fault that Rutgers won't get a full share of B1G money until 2020-21.

Coach Ash can make all the needed changes behind the scenes ( S&C, weight rooms, better dorms for players, nutrition, practice fields,..... ) but if we doesn't show progress in year 3 where it matters the most, WINS, he has to win a minimum of 6 games next year, go to a minor bowl, avoid the 50+ point blowouts. That's a reasonable expectation for him in year 3, anything less and Hobbs should be looking for a change next year, otherwise I think we are stuck with striving for mediocrity. Asking Ash to win 6 games next year should be the minimum requirement anything less is massive failure.

We will have who I think is probably one of our most qualified OC's in a long time with strong stable of young QB's and if one of the young QB's can emerge to be a leader and a decent QB, winning 6 games with the improving defense is something Ash can get done. Ash is who he is, he's not going to out recruit Meyer, Franklin, Harbaugh and it looks like he's not going to out recruit Durkin or even PJ Fleck, he doesn't have the personality like these other coaches, he is going to have to show major improvements in coaching ability and with wins. Since he doesn't have the personality of a great recruiter, it's a catch-22 for him, he's going to have to develop the players he has and coach them up and recruiting than picks up.

Think many are missing the point of this thread. If you don't see the importance in selling a simple vision, then you're the one being obtuse. Gary's kids believed "the chop", and it played a factor to get them to the next level. Love Ash but he needs help in this regard. When you are as far down as us you need all the inspiration possible, gimmicky or not.

I think most of you know I’m a Cuse fan. I listened to Ash speak about his vision last week when he came and spoke at the NYS coaches clinic at Turning-stone. It was pretty clear that he’s going to out work you, he’s going to beat you at the fundamentals. He’s going to find players that want to be at Rutgers that are willing to buy in and do what it takes. He spoke with passion and confidence. He is very excited about the Camp hire (he was there with him). They are going to deliver a product that will make top Jersey kids second guess themselves about leaving the state. I was very impressed. He shared some program coaching philosophies and fundamental drills that they do everyday. He talked with me for 5 minutes after his presentation. He’s excited about playing Cuse. He thinks it’s important to keep some northeast rival games. Helps with recruiting. I think he’s great for college football. He will be a great coach in due time. He just needs the time. Unfortunately he might not get that at Rutgers.

That was not the OP’s point, many people agreed that he needs to do a better job selling.

It’s so much more convoluted when you hear Ash’s vision. I like USC’s. “We play to win championships”. It’s a all over the place there. In every sport they field. So much better.
We are not USC or anything close to it.
"I go to bar to bang supermodels."
That's great, but when you start out looking like this, you sound foolish saying things like that:

Why chase unobtainable goals.

This is exactly what I'm getting at. his message/vision isn't resonating with the best New Jersey recruits. I'm looking at a top 10 class of 2019, and I have doubts as to whether we can land any of them.

A vision should be easy to remember, simple, clear, and aspirational, imo. His stated vision, which knightshft provided, doesn't aspire to excellence.
You know what is clouding the vision? 2-10, 78-0, 58-0, etc., etc.
Give it a rest. Hard to believe you were all giddy pro-RU, going to kick everyone's *** when FLOOD was the coach, and after 2 years you sour on the guy who is fixing everything FLOOD broke. SMH.

Actually in the short term that is not the case. It took me a while to realize what I do now, but the fact is for the betterment of the AD, the behind the scenes stuff and major fundraising right now is 10x more important than 6 wins. Hobbs is playing chess not checkers with the department and has a long term strategic goal in mind. He cannot execute on this if we have another national embarrassment. He doesn't have time to babysit some hot head or cowboy who only cares about their own short sighted needs who could risk everything by doing something boneheaded.

Ash is not a world beater and I don't see him here in 5 years, but he's building a strong culture while improving the base talent level. I mean before he got here the friggin paint was pealing on the walls while our own players were telling recruits to not come here. Meanwhile our lazy AD office was littered with career government workers who didn't even bother to update the potential donor list of former letter winners in ten years. It was that bad.

Hobbs is trying to build an athletic department that would attract the types of athletes and coaches that are needed for long term success. In another 2 years, we will know if Ash has the chops, and if doesn't then we will be in a much better position to hire the type of coaching staff we all desire. Right now we are not there. Have another national scandal and we fall back another 5+ years.

That could be a good point. Maybe Ashe is laying the ground work before pulling out all the stops. Once we get into "the hunt", then what's next?

Make no mistake, the enthusiasm level wiil need to be manic to break to the next level. Cool and stoic ain't gonna cut it imho.

Yes. I am OK with his stated goals/vision when he was hired. If he would have said he was going to win the conference or national championship, I would have rolled my eyes. There is more than a subtle difference between a vision and a hallucination.

Al. It's obvious you are not an Ash fan. But please stop the ******** and be real for a change. The record you are playing and song your are singing is tiresome whether it be pro or con. You are almost as bad as Trump with your denyment of reality. And as many will agree this coming year 3 in Ash's and Hobb's tenure is most important but spare us from your idiotic nonsense.

His goal is to make enough noise at Rutgers that a bigger school takes notice and hires him as HC. Ash has never seemed to be a guy who planned to stick around for 10 years or more. Just the truth

What coach nowadays DOES stay at 1 school more than 10 years?

That is 1 reason why your post is meaningless.

This is an AWESOME post that every Rutgers fan should be made aware of.
It would actually be great to start a new thread with it so it doesn’t remain buried in this thread (if someone wants to do that).

Then just MAYBE some of the constant Ash Bashers would cool their jets and stop hoping Schiano or Golden comes strolling through the door in 2019.

THANK YOU FOR SHARING, money3189!!!

This whole lack of vision nonsense is just another method for the Ash Bashers to criticize our coach.

I’m sure Ash has a vision and communicates that to his staff, players, high school coaches recruits, and their families (see money’s excellent post above).

Let me ask this.

What is the vision of the head coach at:

Indiana?
Maryland?
Purdue?
Illinois?
Minnesota?

Syracuse?
BC?
Pittsburgh?
Virginia?
Wake Forest?

Does anyone know?
Does anyone care?

Talk is cheap.
Ash is putting in the work.
That is all we can ask, especially at this time with so many limitations facing our program compared to our peers.

No program without any history is going to vault into the elites.

Some of the expectations here are just unreasonable.

First step would be to recruit with the likes of Top 25 back to back classes like MSU or MD. Even Ped State started in the Top 25 edges before recruiting elite this year (Top 10 class).

Success is incremental.

Who believes that? We need more enthusiasm and vision to attract more talent and to be midlevel. Very simple point.

Recruiting talent is much more than just enthusiasm and talk is cheap. It works for one or maybe two years and then recruits want to see results and player development.

No results = no recruits

Quite a lot actually, and even if it hasn’t been 10 years there’s plenty of coaches in the big 10 alone that it seems they are long term committed to the team. Meyer, Franklin, Dantonio, Kirk Ferentz has been at Iowa forever, Paul Chryst even in 2 years has established himself at Wisconsin and is what I would consider a 10 year plan there. All these other coaches seem to talk much more about the future and long term success of their respected programs, all I hear ash say is “we’re going to work to get better every day”... which imo is the most annoying nothing answer a coach can give. I have no idea of what ash’s idea of getting better is... does that mean the goal is to just be bowl eligible and field a competitive team? Or does Rutgers actually want to compete with the OSU, PSU, and michigan’s of the conference?

This what?

That Ash doesn’t plan to retire from Rutgers?
How dumb is that point?

The point is I don’t think it’s a good move for a big ten program to be hiring a guy who would jump ship in a heartbeat the minute a ‘better’ offer came in. People on this board constantly talk about taking the Iowa model of building talent, well in order to do that you need a coach that isn’t ever going to leave like Iowa has with Kirk Ferentz. Same thing with Michigan state which most people forget up until about 6-7 years ago was nothing more than an average big ten program. Get a stable coach in there who talks about wanting to stay there and be there long term and see the results... I have never heard anything from chris ash that would indicate he wants to be at Rutgers for a long time... recruits notice this

No, it is not.

There are other coaches who have built up exactly the way I told you. Do some research.

You have to coach up/player develop/ game plan and get the underrated recruits that elites don't want.

It is not easy but neither is life for lower tier programs trying to become mid-tier. It has been done many times.
