How do we better compete with Penn State?

It does ALWAYS come back to recruiting. The Wisconsin model that many here have brought up is COMPLETELY misunderstood.

I have worked in recruiting and Wisconsin DOES get 4 stars-- many are just not properly rated. They DOMINATE their state. It is just that those states are not the locations recruiting analysts want to go and drive miles and miles in the freezing cold.

The attention goes to concentrated areas like Cali, Texas, Fl, GA and then NJ, DMV etc.

This whole misnomer that Wisc. plays with garbage recuits and coaches em up is false.

First step is keeping and developing enough local talent to consistently beat the mid-level teams. Just getting to a bowl game every year would make the program look respectable enough for kids with major offers who want to stay local. Right now Rutgers is an afterthought to these kids looking to play big-time football. From that point a lucky upset over OSU Michigan or PSU propels the program into the national spotlight and makes it more appealing for the local kids to stay home. From there the sky is the limit. Schiano proved its all very possible. NJ recruiting talent stacks up with almost any other region. Just need to get the program close enough to the powerhouses for local kids to think there's a chance for major wins. Nothing can compare to winning major games for your hometown in front of all your friends and family. It just needs to seem possible.

This may be a sore subject on here but look at what Franklin did at Vandy for an example of the model. The Vanderbilt program was way worse off than Rutgers in any football measurement. Once Franklin was doing just OK in the SEC the talent started flowing in. He still wasn't getting 5 star kids but his classes were all top 25ish territory towards the end. If the talent is developed that's good enough to compete with anyone. A top 25 class of seniors has a great shot at beating a top 5 class of sophomores. Regardless, Franklin didn't need to be competitive with Alabama to start making hay. Who knows where Vandy would be if he stayed there, but I imagine they'd be in the top third of the SEC most years with a shot at having truly elite seasons through some lucky breaks. If Rutgers can just attain that level of success the program will have extremely high potential from that point forward.

Not start this again but if you’re not offering me slippers I ain’t either. LOL

You guys are sad excuses for human beings. Associating the evil deeds of a sick individual with "school spirit" and advocating for the abuse of current Penn State students just because you are envious of the success of our football program... that is horrible. I would hope that Rutgers fans generally disassociate themselves with this sort of poor behavior, lets the stench begin to infect the entire fan base.

Get back to us when you're willing to admit the truth. All of it.

Puntgers? My God, that is funny. How do you guys come up with these gems? I looked at the psu board the other day and you guys like to spell Rutgers as Rutgres. Again, hilarious.

I kinda like Rutgres. After all we did wear it one game. LOL.

I don't think you should be worrying about State. You should be worrying about Maryland, Purdue, Indiana, Illinois, Northwestern, Iowa, and Michigan State. You will never compete with what Penn State offers unless you pour "billions" in your football program and sell your soul to the devil. They have it all. They are what you call a Blue Blood program and truly never had to deal with any competition in the Northeast for that crown. That's why they cling to that "Unrivaled" moniker because it's true. You just gotta beat them with player development. When your stars are 4th and 5th year older players, you beat their 4 and 5 star sophomores, freshmen, and juniors who have nothing but dollars signs on their mind. That's how it works for a program like Rutgers unless you go all out Blue Chips and start cheating.
Blue chips and cheating, too funny from someone with an Ala DAMN bama logo. lmao

Nothing more frustrating than watching our squad being slaughtered by our neighbors to the West, for the past three years. The beatings are just as bad as the Giants Stadium beatings we took under Coach Graber against them.

Really thought we caught up to them in 2014, only to lose a heartbreaker and then proceed to watch our program fall apart, while their program flourished. Really tough to take.

Hopefully we will be more competitive with them this year. The key I think is to get good QB play from either Gio, Artur, Jonathan, or Jalen. Really haven't had that since Nova graduated.

We also need WRs and RBs to step up. All hands on deck to upgrade the WR corp. Daevon Robinson, Jalen Jordan, Naijee Jones, and Eddie Lewis should all get a shot at PT. If it's found that their better TE prospects, Robinson and Jordan can redshirt to bulk up, but they deserve a shot as that position could use a big receiver, capable of using his physicality to make big plays.
Like the talent we have at RB. Blackshear showed flashes of being. a playmaker, while Hilliman should see significant action. Add in Pacheco, Sneed, and Snorweah, the RBs look good to go.

Line play should hopefully be decent enough, especially after year 3 of Parkers S&C and a decent amount of upper classmen as well as returnees on the 2 deep. Also excited about the depth and returning talent at LB and TE.

Just want to be competitive with them this year. That would be a significant step forward.

Somebody said" Don't Sleep on Flacco".

Let's not forget Melton either. He has speed....something we desperately need...let's not waste it (e.g. Shuler).

Having toured the football facility at Pedo St, they are 100% committed to football excellence. We cannot mimic their model. They completely brain wash students the moment they get on campus and by the time they graduate they have insane amounts of school spirit. While good, that's why 40 years of child rape went without a hiccup because everyone there is taught to prioritize football over anything else.

You want us to stop getting our asses kicked? We need to catch up facilities wise. That's a large part of it. If a recruit is visiting 2 schools and school A has 5 different things to help the player maximize his talent and school B has 2, which do you think is more impressive? I'm not talking slides or rock climbing walls or TVs in lockers, I am talking state of the art locker rooms, state of the art weight rooms, training rooms, etc. That all happens through donating from alums and fans. Ash has done a great job helping us to close the gap there but if any of you visit other facilities in the B1G East, you'll understand why we are where we are in the standings and that was before Kyle Flood downgraded our roster to Sun Belt level.

The way you guys brain wash people is exactly how and why it festered for 4 decades. Not one Pedo St fan I talk to ever wants to bring it up. When I was there, students couldn't go two sentences without saying one of the following: "We Are" "Blue" "White" "Penn State". I get it, Penn State is all the matters in the World of Central PA but I don't envy it, Hence why I said we cannot mimic it. It's a cult and it's why 40 years of child molestation was able to happen. Sorry the truth hurts.

I live in NJ. More kids from my town go to PSU (and other B1G schools) than Rutgers. Why do you think that is? Because they are brainwashed? Or because on every level, from campus to academics to sports to enviornment, we have you beat hands down. There is no comparison between the two schools. The trouble is, Rutgers has PSU envy, and when rebuffed, you start to talk about culture, WE ARE and everything else you admire but can't attain. And maybe, just maybe, our students have a lot more pride in their school than yours. And you know the reasons why.
So stop worrying about and condemning PSU, and try and beat the Illinois of the world. And also, if you want to be big time, dont expand your stadium to 52k ,but go right up to 70k and act like you belong.

Hmm, maybe because they hired a HEAD COACH from a P5 program, not someone who needs 2 full seasons on the job to learn when to not call time-outs and simple game management like going for it on 4&th and a toothpick on the other side of the field ....

See. That right there. That's why everyone is disgusted with your cult. Not just Rutgers but every team, their fans and just regular people across the nation. You guys covered up rape in exchange for a good football team for 40 years and still don't get it. No contrition at all. THAT'S why no one likes you and that's what you fear and realize deep down inside. Everyone knows you're a empty soul-ed cult in denial of reality.

WE ARE... sociopaths.

Rutgers is in a unique situation- where we don't need to match facilities with the blood bloods. We just need to hit on the right coach. New Jersey is deep in football talent. You'll see schools like Temple, Uconn, Cuse come here and recruit 2 star athletes- that become NFL players. We just need a coach who knows what he is doing. A good coach who can sell Jersey pride. Give Jersey football players something to get excited about and a nice portion will stay home. Rutgers doesn't even try to compete. Makes it an easy choice for our players to leave

You seem a little clueless. You need to be on an even ground with your competitors in order to recruit top talent. That goes for college football recruiting or corporate recruiting.

I am not leaving for another firm if they don't have everything I need to be successful and then some. Start ups and rebuilds are attractive to the right kind of personality but if your support system is poor, infrastructure not up to date and facilities lacking...you're not going to get the talent you want to get.

It's already in the culture in PA in high school. PA high schools have a lot more school spirit and generally there is much more state pride in PA than NJ. It continues on campus for sure. It's not the "culture" that caused the tragedy. It was a few weak individuals and one sick bastard. In no way shape or form is the average penn state fan to blame culture wise or in any other way.

Or maybe your just clueless on selling location? Ohio St and Penn St has to have amazing facilities. Because no attractive recruit would choose to live there otherwise. People will sacrifice to dwell in a place they wanna be. Look at how much people to live in NYC for small apartments. The right coach can get you close without matching facilities. Cincy and Boise St had some pretty good teams with Peterson n Kelly. Facilities weren't all that

It's institutional. A school that hires Julie Hermann to be AD, Eddie Jordan with his 100 game below 0.500 NBA record, runs a good coach Mike Rice out of town over some minor transgression is never going to compete with the big boys. Any success Rutgers has will be the exception not the rule.

Lol.

It's always the NJ PSUers who have this sentiment. Cognitive dissonance for spending 3x the amount for the same quality of education. Both schools are excellent state universities.

I highly highly doubtful more kids in your NJ town went to PSU then Rutgers. Unless you're way the hell up in Sussex county or down near Cape May where all the Philly trash congregate
