Is he the guy Flood gave a schollie, to long snap, but lost the job to a walk-on? That's gotta be tough. Best of luck to the kid, however, seems like a good one!

From Virginia probably go to JMU and play for a title next year lol!

But shouldn't this be he is graduating snd not returning for a 5th year with eligibility. Does this open up a scholarship? All the best to this young man and his contributions t o Rutgers football.

He was really shaky his first 2 years and played much better in his 3rd before losing his job last year.

Good luck to him wherever he ends up and once he finishes school. Thanks for choosing RU Alan!

I think the answer is yes and no. The basic rule is 25 per class for a total of 85. Clearly you can't have 25 a year and not lose any because 4 times 25 is 100, way over the 85 limit. So teams need upper classism to leave. This years class can take 25. Three were used on transfers under the old rules leaving 22. We have signed 19 leaving three spots. Lucy leaving doesn't help this year. We are stuck on the number. However, it comes off the 85 total so his spot can be put into next years pool allowing it to creep closer to the full 25.. This is why most coaches are ok with upper classism who are way down the depth chart transferring out. That allows the incoming class to take a full, or at least close to full, 25. Essentially each year you can expect between 15/20 scholarships to graduate and between 5/10 to transfer out and you get 25 new ones to give out. Please feel free to correct me if anything I have posted is incorrect. Clearly the recruiting rules and eligibility requirements are more complex then I may have suggested. But as for Lucy, his spot doesn't help this years class but does, I believe, open a spot for next years class.

since he was graduating and done if he stayed this year he would have come off 85 total either way next year?

Sorry, didn't realize he was a grad transfer. You are correct as a grad they do not have to honor his scholarship so they probably would have pulled it and freed up the ship anyway. In any event his departure does not effect this years total at all.

no need to apologize. I was just throwing that out there. BTW..nothing to do with honoring the scollie. Since he would be off the team in 2019 after year#5 in 2018 he would free up the spot then either way. As you said, pulling the ship for THIS season 2018 wouldn't free up a spot.
