WSU's current DC is going to Ohio State as the 10th assistant.
Kind of an odd move, unless the current DC is planning to move on?
Why leave a P5 DC position for a lower position at another P5 program?
Grinch did a great job at WSU.

In his third season at WSU, Grinch has transformed the Cougars’ defense. They finished the season ranked 15th nationally in total defense, sixth with 27 turnovers and seventh in tackles-for-loss per game (8.2).

IIRC he's from Ohio and he may be getting more money too who knows. It's also a more probably jump to a HC spot being UM assistant than Mike Leach's although Leach's tree has spun out quite a few offensive guys.

UM just recently stated that their qb coach Ryan Day turned down an SEC job. I don't know if I believe that myself, maybe turned down the offer to be interviewed as opposed to being offered and turning it down. Point is though either way being a UM assistant raises your profile to be a HC down the line.

maybe more to this than known at this time.
A move after the buckeyes bowl game might be in the works and this is the first step.
Just a guess, but this move makes me wonder why go from a P-5 DC position you looked good at to a 10th coach spot, even if it's at a premier P-5 program in your home state.

To groom yourself in a top flight conference, on a year in, year out, great football program....oh, and under one of the best coaches around.

This move has been rumored for a few days. Really not a surprise although a bit of a headscratcher I agree. My first thought was that he was to be groomed as Schiano's replacement for when he moves on possibly next year.

That explains it best.
Or perhaps what @rutgersguy1 said about going back home
Don't agree with @LETSGORU91 about top flight conference. IMO Opinions, B1G, PAC12 and SEC are all top flight P5, and B1G 12 and ACC are not chopped liver.

I was hoping for a mild expansion of the 10th coach. This might signal some significant moves this off-season

Ted Roof Georgia Tech's DC joined NC State as the 10th assistant where he'll be AHC/co-DC.

I'd like to see a co-OC setup for us with one being the main and one being a little junior, someone like a Graham Harrell or maybe Ryan Carty. If it's Mazzone then his son Taylor, maybe not as co-OC for the moment but with the assumption that he could takeover if he's has the aptitude for it.

Once you've stolen Christmas, every job is a step down. Whatever makes you unhappy is fair game.
Your a slick one, Mr. Grinch
Your hearts an empty hole
All the who's in Washington wonder
While you schemes to steal Gary's thunder
Mr. Grinch
I wouldn't touch you with a 39 1/2 foot pole.

Agreed. I wasn't insinuating that the B1G was the cream of the crop. My point was taking a demotion to a top conference, top team, and top coach seems like a desirable choice to me. Especially when OSU's DCs and OCs leave pretty regularly for bigger and better things. That leaves very good possibilities for an assistant to slide right into that slot and learn from one of the best (Meyer).
