I thank him for his time and dedication here over the past year. Wish him well and hope he can find a suitable position with a school somewhere where he can be involved in football and have his health.

Best of luck to him with his health and his future.

Closure was best for business on all sides here and hopefully conversations are far along on a very well-qualified and regarded replacement.

Jerry Kill retires from Rutgers after 1 year due to health | National search underway for new OC

Given his hiring track record, Ash's short list will include coaches he was worked with or faced during his stops as an assistant at Ohio State, Wisconsin, Arkansas, San Diego State and Iowa State.

Ash already has been in contact with Ole Miss offensive coordinator Phil Longo, former Arkansas offensive coordinator Dan Enos and likely outgoing Texas A & M offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone, NJAM has learned.

All three likely would command a salary of more than Kill's Rutgers assistant record $625,000 and all have spoken with Ash for various reasons in the past. Another high-priced candidate on the open market is East Hanover native Jedd Fisch, former offensive coordinator for Michigan and UCLA.

Really do wish him well - he is a class act who was a great program builder and leader of men

I really hope Ash uses this gift to overhaul the offense similar to what he has done on special teams and defense and we have a lot ot look forward to !!!!

Wish Jerry well! Hope he get's the medical issues under control...

Now we better have Mazzone under contract!!!
Yes, all the best to coach Kill, but, what is this say about Rutgers Football? this is what, 10 OQ’s in ten years? Finally someone in the sports department has to realize that an OQ, is as important as the head coach, Mr Hobs,
Please, enough already, hire someone that wants to be here for the long term, other wise, get ready to hire a new head coach, without stability in the offense, recruiting will suffer!!

All the best to coach Kill. I think he did a very good job with what he had to work with this year.

This could be a blessing in disguise. An experienced OC with a good track record of developing QBs would sure be welcome. Sign him to the end of Ash's contract, give him a competitive salary, and hope he sticks.

I wish Jerry the best, and I appreciate him coming here, however I take two silver linings from this:

1. We can do better at OC. Sure the talent needs to improve but look at what Purdue did with less talent and speed than us.

2. The way the process has been handled by our coaching staff and Jerry was 100% the right way to do it. Other programs would have tried to bury something like this until after the recruits signed. The fact that Ash and co. were up-front and honest about it tells me about the types of people they are, and I always appreciate rooting for good guys.

Of course, nothing but the best and sincere thanks.

But, health, health, nfl, nfl, head coach, staff change, staff change, and one guy who totally sucked.

Ugh.....

The RU staff was whispering this since the season ended

Kill was a solid guy and could have eventually built a sustainable offence at RU.

RU can now go get someone who is all in for the long haul.

Forget most of the names on the top of that NJ.com list. Look for a proven OC from a non P5 school. Brian Wright from Toledo fits the profile

To Jerry - Good luck, god bless, be healthy.

To RU - please find a good one, we need an OC who will stay and get this offense going

To all on the board - seasons greetings. Hope we find an offensive genius under the tree.

ALSO A CLASSY MOVE BY RU TO ANNOUNCE THIS BEFORE KIDS COMMIT TOMORROW.

Some schools would have sat on this until January, after kids were locked in.

They'd both need close to $1,000,000 to come here
Longo makes what Kill made, $600k (at least according to the other article from Dunleavy) and Mazzone made $815k at TA&M, but he's not making anything atm, lol.
Hopefully, Pat can pry the pocketbook open a little further, 800k could get either one. Or is that wishful thinking on my part?

How do you hire someone who wants to be here long term? Do you ask them, "So, Mr. Candidate, where do you see yourself 14 months from now? Do you expect to lead the Knights offense or do you expect to be running after the next offer?"

I really liked what I saw and heard from Kill. He seems like a real class act and a great football coach. It is really sad that his health has prevented him from doing what he loves. I wish him the best.

I do hope Coach Ash goes the route of an experienced OC, with prior head coaching experience a big plus in Fridge, Kill vein. I think that would help CA with the learning curve and give the players a sense of confidence. DM was a disaster not to be repeated.

Longo is making $700K now will prob get a raise next year so he's not coming back to expensive NJ to take on a tough situation for $800,000.

Yeah, but it's not exactly like he's sitting on a great situation in Oxford.

Very interesting that Jerry was seizure free when he worked as a football admin at K-State, but started to have them again when he was coaching. Hopefully he will be seizure free if he stays out of coaching.

Personally, I'm surprised because coaching the well-oiled machine that is the Rutgers offense must be stress free.

Matt Luke at Ole Miss is going to have a pretty big assistant salary pool at slightly over 5M. So if he wants Longo and I'm guessing he does we're not outbidding them. Plus I get the feel that he wasn't leaving judging by a qb commit they recently got. We'd also have competition for him with a deep pocketed South Carolina where he has been mentioned as a candidate.

Noel Mazzone on the other hand is possible. He made around 800K at UCLA and similar at A&M. So it would likely take in that vicinity to get him if there are no other suitors but there could be like I said South Carolina is also looking. 800K is pushing it for us but I do think it could be in the realm of possibility. I said maybe offer his son Taylor Mazzone a spot too as 10th assistant and maybe you get him and maybe we keep him for a bit too with the possibility of Taylor taking over as OC in the future if he has any aptitude for it. He was QB coach at UCLA with his dad and when his dad left to A&M he took a demotion to quality control at A&M to go with him.

Mark Helfrich who is just doing tv and Dan Werner who was the former Ole Miss OC with Freeze are other names I've mentioned. Brian Wright from Toledo is a solid option too.

Is that something you heard? Or just your gut feel? I like Brian Wright and think he's a solid option but a Mazzone or Helfrich who would likely be getting salary from previous jobs at least for a year or two don't seem unrealistic if they want to come here.

EDIT: Forgot to mention Sterlin Gilbert Strong's OC at USF and was with him his last year at Texas could also be a solid option if you're looking at the lower levels.

If Graham Harrell the North Texas OC was a little seasoned he might have been nice option too. His experience now is better than DM's when we hired him but not enough for me yet. Those TT guys under Leach (ex players, coaches) usually seem to know offense from Kingsbury, Briles, Dykes, Cumbie, Holgorsen, Riley, etc...
