Wrestles at 154 lbs in the Worlds but can't make 157 lbs at RU. What's up with that?

Saw a recent interview by Goodale where Scott said Richie coulda made 57 but instead of being a underdog at both 57 and 65 they went with the move to bump up RL to 65 and try to wash 57-65... I was hoping RL woulda just went 57 and JVB at 65... sigh..

Lewis woulda most probably been going 165 for this match regardless of past drama... Hopefully, this reinforces to him that he needs to be at 157 for season.. But for last night it was the right move...we needed to win 3 tossups.. We won 1... But Lewis and Grello matches were right there for us...

Here’s the interview. It’s obvious he wants to go 165. Not so sure that’s best for team. He has a good chance to be mid to high AA at 157. I don’t think he makes podium at 165.

https://www.flowrestling.org/video/6055044-richie-lewis-has-a-wild-story

At 165 he has Cenzo, IMAR and Massa at top of weight. Then you have guys like Rogers, Walsh, McFadden, Martettler and that’s only top 7. Then he’s have to beat a Campbell, White, Wick, Marinelli just to sniff top 8. At 157 only guys I don’t think he can beat is Nolf and Kem

It seems that Richie Lewis is about Richie Lewis and does not care about the team. Winning the world championship has been a double edge sword. It proved you can be a world champ by coming to RU. We have the coaches that can train you to be a champ. A kid that wins the championship can also let it go to his head and become toxic. Goodale did the right thing and said it was his decision to wrestle Richie at 165. WNG speaks the party line and is a loyal RU fan. I think Lewis is causing a problem for the team. He does make weight, is pictured playing with cellphone when Coach is speaking to the team, and to me looked out of shape last night. Wonder how hard he has practiced since winning the world championship. Hopefully for the good of the team and his title ambitions, Richie will change his attitude.

Mr. Lewis did a great job last night - Marinelli's nickname is "the Bull" - that kid looks like a 184 ponder that cuts to 165 - he was huge for 165. Lewis, prior to the size difference getting to him, took it right to Marinelli - that first takedown was a thing of beauty. He was just a bit out-horsed by a very tough opponent. I think Lewis will be fine once he adjusts to the weight class. Great bout last night.

Alex is nowhere near 184 before the cut. He just looked "huge" because he is bigger than Richie.

I wonder why Rutgers did not send a coach to Poland with Lewis. Was he causing concerns prior to the world championships?

i said this in the other thread. richie has no shot at the podium at 165. none! i'm sure it wasn't goodale's decision to wrestle him at 165. come on, he never had ash move up a weight to make it a wash before. it was the coach protecting the wrestler for his inability to be motivated for the iowa match. which is strange. grow up richie - this is your last year wrestling college. make it count and be a legend at RU.

I think he has a good shot at making the podium at 165, eventhough its absolutely stacked. At 157, I think he has a shot at being an NCAA finalist if he can make weight in a healthy manner. At this point it seems like he will be going 165 and I'll be rooting for him in a big way. Time to move on and accept he may just not be at peak condition with same day weigh-ins trying to make 157.

Richie was out muscled by Alex M on all of his takedown shots. You saw him in deep on his double shots but could not finish due to Alex’ superior strength. At 165 I agree he has a minimal chance at AA.

To make the podium at either weight ya gotta work and that's just not something he is known to do .He doesn't participate in team runs and like he said in his interview he looks at duals as practice . Even when it coulda been our biggest win in our history. He didn't cut weight or really practice hard this week at all and he was still gassed last night . Richie is about Richie and unless coaches hold him accountable nothing will change and they certainly changed lanes this week . He missed weight at Virginia and Oklahoma dual and coaches did what should have been done . Made him sit . He then decides at last minute at Loch Haven he doesn't wanna go so JVB goes out there hurt to take on Marsteller. We lose that match because Richie didn't wanna wrestle when he could have. He then decides he ain't cutting for Iowa so coaches are put in a bind and let him go 165 ...coaches decision my ***. If it was a coaches decision why didn't they prepare for that decision by having JVB get ready weeks before to get down so as their strongest lineup faces Iowa. I really hope they learned a lesson that one man can take a whole team down . Lost a lot of respect for these coaches with their bogus spin on what really happened .

Sit Lewis until he changes his behavior. The coaches and wrestlers are busting their butts. We don’t need a selfish kid on the team. The more we learn about Lewis the less respect I have for him. He has time to turn his career around and go out on top. I am cheering for him to become a great teammate and win a NCAA title. Just don’t need me first guys representing the Knights.

I agree. He was in on the double leg multiple times and Marinelli (spelling) just stood him up. Lewis did not have strength to finish shots against a strong 165. It definitely appears 157 is a much better weight for him. It would be a shame if he is not focused enough to compete at his highest potential.

He was rusty and needed to be humbled.. not working hard in practice and losing his focus in folkstyle.. this loss will prolly help him more then hurt him in the long run... he will be fine at 165 and looks like him and JVB r swapping weights.. look forward to see how he bounces back at Midlands... do well there and all is forgotten

outsider looking in. It seems Richie and NS are lone wolfs, selfish not team players, it seems like the wrestlers are running the RU program not the coach. this sort of attitude will prevent RU from rising to the next level.

Lewis had awesome tourny to become a world champ..but he must realize there were many wrestlers at his weight that chose not to compete, if the would have Lewis would not be a world champ.

I see a RU team that started the season looking great, but now on a downhill slip.

Unfortunately, when some people train and hit the top, there is a regression afterwards in their motivation to train and compete. That being said, it hasn't been a long time since the Worlds. RL's conditioning shouldn't have taken that much of a hit since. I suspect attitude and motivation are keys here.

How do you come up with NS being a lone wolf? As for the team, they had two very good wins, then we're short handed against Lock Haven, and recently hung with an Iowa team that has dominated them in the past. I don't see them on a downward slip at this time.

every interview with NS that I have seen . it is me me me. RL won the worlds made weight for it, now wants to be 165. seems to me he is thinking Im a world champ I will go what weight I want. Maybe Im wrong maybe it was the plan for RL to go 165. Losing to LH, RL didnt make weigh right? cant consider 141 missing as short handed.. starter out for year right? LHU simply out wrestled RU. at the beginning of the season I would have never guessed the LHU beat RU. again outsider looking in. no disrespect just an observation. BTW before watching LHU beat RU, I predicted RU beating Iowa, Iowa rebuilding year.

Many people here thought LHU matched up real well with RU, with 3 swing matches. RU only took 1 of 3 swing matches, and had 3 starters (I believe)out of the lineup...thats why I said that.

As for NS, I can see what you are saying to a point. If every reporter continually asks about a national championship, you will hear a lot of me, me, me. But I also have heard him say many times it's great to be back and represent his home state and wrestle in front of his family and closest followers.

Will see how the rest of the season plays out...

Ummm. Wrestling is an individual sport. I have no problem with guys being about themselves. It’s up to the coaches to not let it affect the team. The Richie Lewis situation is a very easy one. If I am the coach he gets to pick where he wants to wrestle for the rest of the season right now and then it’s decided and over.

That is a very revealing interview w Lewis after the Iowa match. It confirms what I wrote a few days ago, that us fans take Duals a lot more seriously than most of the wrestlers do, and probably coaches as well. It's all about March.

You’re wrong. Richie may think of duals as practice or don’t take them seriously but coaches certainly do. Yes it’s most important to have guys ready for March but if your message is duals don’t matter, watch what starts happening to your fan base.

Goodale has done a GREaT job getting fan support for this program. Would you rather go back to the days where you had 50 people at matches? I don’t think the athletic director, head coach do.

You want to grow wrestling, make duals huge events like they are doing at Rutgers, PSU, Iowa, tOSU, etc

Trust me you don’t want your star wrestlers talking like that in public. Sends the wrong message. People spend good money to take their families to these events. You don’t want to waste time if these are truly “practice”

The Ohio St coach, as well as other College coaches, hold kids out of duals to prevent losses to help with seeding all the time. There is no crowned NCAA college dual champ , or for many conferences for that matter. Duals are to sell tickets to fund programs and get wrestlers ready for March. Heck , NATO isn't wrestling now, Kyle Snyder spends as much time wrestling International in NOV- Jan as he does for his OSU team. Mark Hall of Penn St last year missed almost the entire Dual season until Feb. Same with Spencer Lee of Iowa this year.
I can go on and on. I've said it before and I'll say it again, as long as the Dual season is marginalized , NCAA wrestling won't grow much more than it is now.

Your using bad examples to make your case. The Ohio State coach is a joke when it comes to this subject. He a salesman. He pumps up matches and then sits starters for seeding and it’s bush league. Even the great Kyle Snyder will be at every big match this year. He knows how important it is to his team and university and the fan base. Kyle Snyder is a guy that could easily quit college afer he won Olympics and collected his payday. He chose to come back to represent his university.

You can’t compare redshirts to this situation. Hall was redshirting, Lee is redshirting. If the coaches feel they need their points they will pull it. Totally different situation.

You also can’t compare injured guys. NATO is injured. How is he going to wrestle?

If you want to hold out guys for small injuries at early season tournaments, that’s fine. But when you have the potential for your biggest dual win in the history of your program all the guys should be ready, on weight and not thinking of it as “practice”

PSU is the best program in the country. 6 out of 7. You think Cael doesn’t take duals seriously? They run their big guns out every dual unless someone is banged up

You think Cael and PSU doesn’t appreciate the fan support, booster support? You won’t have that if you start telling fans the duals are practice. It’s about growing your brand

As a fan of RU wrestling, I'm just pissed at Richie for wrestling at 165 after doing well at U23 at 155lb. Every top 10 kid at 157 cuts as much as Richie if not more for each match, but we don't hear them make excuses and complain. He wants easy way out, and wants to live off of past glory, and not surprised that bull kid from Iowa called him out as being a quitter based on how he finished the match.

Well if you are not trying to win the dual, Goodale is not talking about the strategy of trying to earn the split at 157/165 by ducking Kem and hope RL wins 165. He talked about trying to win six matches. For RU a win against Iowa is huge from a program perception standpoint. If this was all about individual development and RL was on board that 157 was his best weight then why duck Kem rather than taking him on and figuring out where you stand? RL gets to pick his weight provided that he is better than JVB at 165 but this cannot continue to be an issue. It needs to get resolved.

You NEED to watch that interview. He states that with a 24-hour weigh-in, he was able to rejuvenate and weighed in at like 165.5 during match time for the u23s.

He was humbled by the loss to Bull and understands what he needs to do moving forward (he agreed to the fact he thought he was 'the sh*t' after winning the u23s), including practice habits (wearing headgear) and nutrition (he's seeing a nutritionist as of recently).

This morning article on Flowrestling on the Lewis - Marinelli match:

"Marinelli On Lewis: 'He Didn't Want To Keep Wrestling'

He also said the crowd was amazing.
I was there . He was gassed because as he admits ..he didn’t run or practice hard because he is selfish .The sad part of all this Richie drama is JVB is the one suffering most .One of the hardest workers in the room who thinks of nothing but Team and when the biggest match in RU history comes along with us having a real chance to win against a real power he is thrown under bus by coaches who gave into our world champs whims . Losing a wrestle off for a weight class is one thing but losing your spot because your teammate decides he doesn’t wanna work and go up for a match is another. Richie put coaches in this position and they didn’t respect JVB enough to make the right call .i don’t buy for one minute that all were on board for that decision .As I’ve said before do you really think JVB would not have done better then Donner assuming he was given time to get down to 157 . Wake up guys. The coaches gotta draw a line in the sand when it comes to RL . Pick a weight and stay there .Dont wanna do the work to stay at 157 then fine go up to 165 . JVB will do the work and get it done for the team at whichever weight he ends up with.
