was listening to Franchesa about 30 min ago and he had Randall Chamblee on. supposedly he is one of the most harshest critics of tiger. was an interesting discussion. he said that tiger is the best golfer in history and i agree with him. Mike asked him how about Nicklaus. Randall said that statistically, if you compare tigers vs. Nicklaus, it is not even close.

i am a golfer and i have seen tiger play from his college days as an amateur. in my life time, tiger and Jordan are the most dominant in their sports.

I wonder how Randal Graves feels about these comments ?

Problem with that is that Tiger juiced, Tiger had the best equipment, Tiger I believe was the only golfer r to have a 2 piece ball...funny how everything evened out when all equipment was equal

There is no such thing as infallibility or invincibility. Certainly not forever. It would take Tiger in his hay day to compete with the guys on tour now. Some like DJ in their prime, and some like Speith coming into it. And they don't win every tournament, which is even more to the point. Golf in our lifetime has never had the amount of talent on tour that is on it now. At the start of any any tournament there is a legit 20 guys that can win it. In Tiger's time it was like him, and maybe 3 other guys.

One of the most common reasons for the amount of competition you cite, "20 guys can win it", is mediocrity, not 20 of the greatest golfers that ever lived, which would be very rare.

He hit all but one fairway yesterday. Made some birdies. It was a pro-am so he was hitting some extra shots, hard to say what he shot but the accuracy in his game is there.

Justin Thomas said point blank, "I want to kick his ***, tomorrow." Daniel Berger was hiding behind a bunker, buzzing a drone right over his head at one point this week, while other guys gathered around him and laughed. 'm sure he has rust and vey unlikely he contends this week but those young guys are busting his balls and showing him no deference. Music to Tiger's ears, I'm sure. Guy loves to destroy the trash talkers...

12:05 tee time, on the golf channel.

Yet Sergio can win a major now but couldn’t during Tiger’s run. I still remember when he thanked Tiger for not being at the tournament he won.

Yes, he won one major. And a great accomplishment it was. And Sergio knows that he is probably one and done with wins in majors.

Must see golf today when Tiger tees it up with Justin Thomas as a playing partner at noon in the Hero Challenge. Anyone picking Tiger to make some noise this weekend? Great for golf if it happens.

Golf channel at 12:30 PM. As close to pure golf reality as it gets for today.

I think it's more they've only known a different side of Tiger from his time as an ***'t capt in the the Ryder Cup and President's Cup teams. Most of these younger guys weren't even on the Tour when Tiger was still beating everyone.

That's true. I think it's all good natured but what's clear is they have no fear of him, at all. And maybe they shouldn't...we shall see.

Odds on Tiger hitting the first fairway?
Odds he uses a driver on the first?

PS- I don’t know the layout or yardage of the first hole.

So? Your glossing over 20 other guys who are in or are entering their prime.

That's two very different statements. I agree that there are a lot of guys who are entering their prime. But not sure if that means this is the most talent on tour ever.

“First tee shot for Tiger Woods in 301 days: In the fairway -- and about 30 yards past long-hitting playing partner Justin Thomas.”

“Two holes, two low-maintenance pars for Tiger Woods, as he's missed a couple of mid-range birdie putts. Swing looks solid so far, though.”

“By the way, Tiger drove it past JT again on No. 3. This is not something we would have ever expected to happen just a couple months ago. “

“He leaves the eagle putt short again, but he taps in for birdie to move to -1 for the day. “

Looks like a resort course with wide fairways, although it’s somewhat long.

Fowler now -3 after 3 holes. Expecting low scores today.

The wind is the equalizer. As expected, he is long off the tee and very good tee to green. Flat stick needs work.

Been quite a year for Tiger.

Last seen in competition almost a year ago, in Dubai, gimping off the course after flying over to pick up the seven figure appearance fee, even though he knew he couldn't compete or finish the tournament. Dude loves money.

Then another back surgery, this one the most radical...fusing his spine, something they hadn't tried before.

Then the, "driving while blacked out on pain killers" the ensuing photos were horrific.

Now, reports he's outdriving Dustin Johnson half the time on Friday and blowing it 30 yards past Patrick Reed on every drive this morning in the Bahamas. Tiger saying he hasn't felt better in three years, pain free! Brandel Chamblee is over on Twitter saying this version of Tiger's swing looks as mechanically sound as the best swing he ever played with.

I've had my hopes up before...so I'm hesitant to fall for it all over again. But, damn, it's starting to get me real excited to watch some Bahamas golf come Thursday..
Tiger was a Great Player. Was on track to becoming the Best Ever. Injuries.Train left the track. If indeed he is 100% again, then there is NO reason that he could not continue to move towards that pinnacle to which he aspires. I wish him the best and will surely watch his play.

Well, that was quite a performance. Plays the PGA Player of the Year to a dead heat. Driving it as good as he ever has. Short putting looked peak Tiger. Lag putting and short game a bit rusty.

Just like that...

Great round for Tiger. Has to chip better. Putter was outstanding. Driver great. he really messed up #9 with an awful chip. Granted it was an tough lie but four from 30 feet kept him from the lead. One hole one shot.

And if his aunt had balls...

Nice round for him, but what is obvious is obvious. A Tiger competing at top form isn't blowing away anyone now.

One round does not a comeback make, but as I've said all along, anyone who thinks that a fully healthy 42-year old Tiger won't be in the top 5 golfers in the world is a friggin' idiot who knows nothing about golf.

I'd say anyone making that definitive statement doesn't know anything about golf.

And he's tied for 6 right now, not 5.

the only thing that's obvious is that you are not a fan. That's cool. I think a competitive Tiger will bring a lot of excitement to causal fans.

Sure it does. That list is long and distinguished.

The one thing he had that intimidated other golfers and made them try shots they wouldn't normally was his length and clutch putting. Plenty of guys hit it further than him now and guys like Jordan Speith are just as clutch.

A healthy Tiger is a mid tier golfer now. He will make cuts, but not seriously contend. Certainly not over a 4 day period or season.

He had a great run, but it's over.

Speith is as clutch as Tiger?

no way.

when he was in form, everyone (including Jack) agreed he was the definition of clutch. there was no argument. from anyone.

If you remember when Tiger was going thru the issues his pitching and chipping absolutely sucked. He just doesn't have the feel back yet.

Hey, relatively speaking Jack Nicklaus was considered a pretty poor sand player. He just didn't hit it in too many traps

Number 1, yea, they do. Speith is every bit the putter that Tiger was in his prime, and DJ hits the ball farther than Tiger ever did on his best days.

Tiger 100% healthy at 42 is not the Tiger at 30 100% healthy, and the competition is way better now than it was when Tiger was dominating.

Tiger in his prime would not be doing today what he was doing back then. The guys now are just too good, and there are too many of them for that to happen. Tiger isn't dumb. He saw what was happening and what was coming. It's why he kept changing his swing. He felt he needed to to be able to compete with this wave of talent.

Watch what happens if he gets healthy enough to try and compete. For real. Not some made-up tournament that bares his name, but a major. It won't be pretty. A healthy Tiger, right now, is a mid tier guy. No shame in that though. Being a mid tier PGA tour pro is pretty awesome.

you're out of your mind and don't know golf

there is nobody, NOBODY, who dominated with the putter like Tiger

again, ask every great. they will say the same thing.

unlike the current events board, you can't just make stuff up. :p

Take it easy. While Tiger played well today, your comment about playing the player of the year to a dead heat after 18 holes means next to nothing.

After 72 holes I’ll be more accepting of that statement. Lets watch the next 3 rounds and see what happens.

Just like that he’s back in your mind ? Fake news from a Tiger fanatic.

I agree that durability will be a concern. Back surgeries and his age are all working against him. He is still swinging out of his shoes so he is not holding back.

Good to see you are as over emotional and unhinged here as the CE board. Consistency is a good thing.

Never said he didn't dominate w/ the putter. I am saying he won't now.

Your posts about Tiger look like GRF posts (last year) about Corey Sanders. :joy:

To be fair to GRF, he's been very fair to Corey, this year.
