Why is Maryland recruiting so well then? Must be that Orange Bowl appearance in 2001 right? Our fanbase/atmosphere is better.

They tell all the recruits it's the program of Randy White and Boomer Essiason. .

A) 90% of NJ residents (not just recruits) hate NJ and can't wait to leave and 90% of non-NJ residents think NJ is pretty much a giant landfill and would never consider coming here...

B) Rutgers football, whether warranted or not, has been the butt of jokes for years in the media which creates the perception that it's a team of bumbling losers. You never hear anyone mocking Maryland even though they've pretty much been the same or worse than us for years...

Almost impossible to overcome those things with game day atmosphere...

Really have to agree with this to some extent. The differences within the in-state population are polar opposites to almost any state. I guess it's a massive NJ inferiority complex. We go 4-8 and our people will say we suck, shouldn't be in the B1G etc. In Maryland, I'm pretty confident the in-state message is completely different.

Maryland has been utter dog **** this year. Imagine what everyone would be saying if we lost 66-3 at home to end our season?

Yup, totally agree. In Maryland the message (I assume/feel) is resident support and questions of "how do we get better " in NJ it's "we don't belong with the big boys , we stink" ... inferiority complex. Just my $.02

In a lot of ways, we are our own worst enemy (NJ residents I'm referring to).

I would say in Rutgers case that attitude is correct until it’s proven wrong . Sad but true.

I said it in the other thread. Rutgers does not have 12th generation Jerseyans to count on for loyal support. So RUs challenge is to find a way to demonstrate for mostly people born in India, China, New York and Mexico that they have a vested interest in the prosperity of the State University, and that the State University has a vested interest in their prosperity as well.

If Rutgers were to cease to exist tomorrow, what difference would it make to anyone. Rutgers has failed to get even it's alumni to care. How does anyone expect the average NJ resident to think twice about it, especially the majority of residents, who came from places like China, New York and India and have no reason to hold Rutgers in any particular high esteem.

What a bunch of horse crap. Rutgers has 20 million fans within a 1 1/2 hour drive of the stadium. The fact we have the crowds we do, after the last three seasons, shows a loyal core fan base that will ride this through. Rutgers as a power in the B1G, is inevitable. Too many potential fans close by, too many quality players all around the region...hope Ash can get it done. If not, someone else will.

Bad recruiters. Schiano had good years and bad years but he was able to land a distinctly higher level of recruits than his predecessors. He had a low ceiling with what he could achieve with his teams but he was quite good at recruiting.

Our atmosphere is great. Ash needs to continue to make RU competitive. With that the stadium will get even better.

Its a product of this area that Ash doesnt even have a clue of yet because he hasnt really seen it from our sideline. Tremendous upside to encourage recruiting if he can turn the corner and make us competitive.

What exactly is preventing high quality recruits from wanting to come here. It's not the fanbase or atmosphere, or facilities.
Losing, that's your answer. What kid wants to come to a program where the coach looks like he's completely lost during a game. In a million years I wouldn't send my kids to play at Rutgers not with this staff

And a boatload of Under Armour $
---
I never understood how having extra money such as the Under Armour money makes a big difference between a program like ours and a Maryland...... IMO I think it is more that the Maryland head coach and staff does a bit better sell job, and they had a bit of momentum after last year, which is now retreating a bit.

When we are talking really big money, of course you then can hire a killer coach and top notch assistants..... but I can't see the money difference between Maryland and us being
THE deciding factor.

Our problem with not being able to keep the best players home is a Catch 22. Can't win without better talent, can't get better talent without winning. Pretty simple. [sick]

I don't want to be a wet blanket, but we also have to look at a game like yesterday in its entirety ...... yes, the crowd was supportive, loud, made noise on third downs, etc....but as the game wore on the majority of the fans, students were gone.....all I heard for the most part, were a few MSU chants, at least in the section I was sitting.

if a recruit sat through the full game, he saw our crowd spirit early on, but all that
dissolving away in despair....... he gets both views of the program..... if the recruit were to visit another program where a game is close, fan support is consistent, possibly he leaves with a better feeling there....

but if we are going to tout our atmosphere, we have to at least consider how it appears at the end.

I think the young alumni are a lot more invested and that the first generation college students who graduated during the GS years are in that group. My Facebook during the season is full of tailgaiting pics from folks I graduated with and they come from all over.

I also think if we could compete in the B1G there will be even more buy in from that generation.

Given the cost of college there is an increasing set of parents which more and more includes college grads and native born NJans who are cool with their kids going to RU as well.

The generation who roots for ND out of habit is dying out I think.

So one cool thing on 3rd down now equates to top atmosphere?

Has you been any where else except for RU? It's a nice atmosphere but it pales in comparison with most of the schools you would consider college football royalty. BTW, MSU's is horrible, I've been there. RU's may be a better than that, but it's kind of like being the tallest midget - to borrow from another thread.

Diceman, Michigan fans said a few years ago we were very loud. Maybe you don't know much about us. Arkansas fans thought we were very loud. SEC, does that count for you?

MSU is a respected program who has been in the playoffs. If we have a better atmosphere then them then I say that's a pretty good thing. I've been to Michigan. Was underwhelmed. I've been to Maryland, it stunk. I've been to PSU which was very impressive.

What I don't get is why we are losing recruits to programs like UNC, NC State, BC etc. These programs don't have much at all over us besides them not being in NJ.

Just not true. All NJ residents I know hate the property taxes, but most love NJ, and lament the fact that the high cost of living will force them to another state. When I have people from other parts of the country stay here, I get nothing but great comments, and have never heard a bad reference.
