B1G Cross Divisional Scheduling Question....

Does anyone know how the scheduling works? It seems like we have played a couple of teams multiple times and still have yet to play others...For example we have played Nebraska 3 times and Wisconsin 2 times but we have yet to play Northwestern, and until this year had yet to play Purdue and Illinois.

Next year we finally get to play Northwestern but Purdue drops and Wisconsin is back on. So we will have played two of the strongest West teams 3 times in Nebraska and Wisconsin and everyone else only once.

We played Illinois each of the last two years.

It's the conference's goal to give the better teams as much exposure to our market as possible. Competitive balance be damned. That's why we are in the conference, so it is our cross to bear.

I think(?) that the only protected inter-divisional rivalry is Purdue vs Indiana. So teams in the East may get to play the Boilers less often.

It hasn't been discussed here often, but there are actually cross-division rivals right now in the Big Ten. Illinois is ours (I guess since we played them a few times in the 2000s), so we play them every year, and then 2 of the other 6 in the West. So every 3 years, you play everyone, and every 6 years, you'll have had everyone home/away.

The new format only started last season, so the 2014 one where we played Wisconsin and Nebraska doesn't count towards the rotation. And the reason we got those was because our first year in the B1G they wanted us to have the best schedule possible in terms of big-name schools (UMD also played those 2), and it was only 2 because it was an 8-game conf. schedule.

Every Big Ten team is assigned an annual opponent in the opposite division from 2016 through 2019. Series played each year during that cycle include Wisconsin-Michigan, Nebraska-Ohio State, Iowa-Penn State, Northwestern-Michigan State, Illinois-Rutgers, Minnesota-Maryland and Purdue-Indiana. Spanning that four-year scheduling cycle, every school will compete against two other cross-divisional opponents twice and four opponents once.

Indiana-Purdue is considered the only permanent cross-divisional rivalry. The other 12 schools will rotate “permanent” rivals for another four-year block.

Yep.

If we had to play OSU every week I'd still be thrilled to be in the B1G.

2020 - 2021 B1G schedule was released and Illinois continues to be our cross division rival. That would complete the 6 years cycle.

I don't know where you 2 are getting this "4 year" stuff from. We're playing Illinois and State is playing Iowa - YEARLY - clear through 2021 at the very least.

That what they said in a release. It suppose to be set up based on competitive balance. So it might not change drastically every couple of years.

Yup. I wasn't thrilled when Northwestern drew Michigan State, but it's worked out for the Cats as MSU has slipped a bit the past couple of years. I'll be very happy to watch Rutgers pound the Illini for the next few years.

Illinois is our cross-divisional rival for, i believe, a six year period. After that they reassess the cross divisional rivals. So it may change or it may stay the same depending on competitive balance.

Does every B1G 10 squad have a consistent cross over opponent in the other division?

We have Illinois for 6 consecutive years I believe.

Though this is good from a W-L standpoint, I am not a proponet of tis scheduling as it takes away from matchups of other schools such as Iowa; Northwestern and Purdue - whom we play minimally.

With the exception of Purdue - Indiana / Michigan - Minnesota: there should not be consistent cross over opponents.

I don't know where you are getting this "I said 4 year" stuff .. clearly I said 3, and then 6 for home and home, if you read

There were complaints by some of the older B10 schools that in the 14 team conference some schools don't get to play Michigan and Ohio St. Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Northwestern in the western division don't get to play the traditional eastern powers as much. I think some of the scheduling is so they can play the eastern powers.

I get the cross division rival but with playing some teams 2-3 times already as pointed out and others for the first time this year or next, how do they plan on evening it all out? Are we playing NWU and Purdue for consecutive years any time soon. And you know damn well that when the rival cross over is redone- it will be someone like Wisc or Neb for us...

At this point it is not meant to be fair.

Nebraska and Wisconsin vs RU has more juice than a Minny or Northwestern game. This also allows Minny and Northwestern an extra game or 2 vs traditional rivals of Michigan and Ohio St. Plus it helps the B10 avoid midseason games of the perennial favorites of each division making it more likely for 0 or 1 loss teams to meet in the championship. Wisconsin plays Michigan this year but Michigan is not a powerhouse this year so it probably won't lead to a rematch in the championship game.

When MD and RU were added the old time B10 fans complained that they wouldn't be able to play their favorite rivals every year anymore. Fans from Illinois and Michigan had played just about every year for over 75 years and now only play each other every few years.

Northwestern was the most vocal team against RU’s admission in the B1G and it’s really no coincidence that they play us the least.

Guessing just against expansion in general? And then specifically losing big attendence draws in Michigan and OSU?
