I thought everyone said he was ours?
He probably was but with no scholarship available. These kids can’t hinge their future on the possibility of a scholarship opening up and if it doesn’t and he spurned other suitors committing here it could have pushed other schools away. That scenario could leave Washington and his family scrambling in the last hour.

He wanted to come here, we wanted him to come here. We didn't have a scholarship open since it went to Harper a while ago. I'm not sure who I would rather have at this point. The hope is a scholarship still opens up, but we do have some higher targets in sight.

Any update on Shaq Carter? Really would like to land him. I thought I read recently that we were 3 or 4 deep on a visit to his school
We're more than likely not going to have many updates until a schollie opens. We are firmly on him though

It's too bad but maybe he just wanted to stay on the west coast. It is understandable as his family and friends can see him play.

These are the troubles that would never have been a concern a few years ago
- another very good player that wants to play for Rutgers - but at this moment Rutgers does not have room.

This sux.

FYI he's a 7 footer now and going to be an absolute beast in college. He measured in at 6'11" when he visited Rutgers.

Sucks we didn't have the schoolie for him. He was probably right getting the guaranteed ship now. No guarantee one would have opened up for us in the spring.

If he doesn't sign an LOI, he can change direction in the Spring- no?

This is a good place to be in where quality players want to come and we don't have room.

It happens but it's way more rare in basketball than football. Once a guy commits he's generally committed, the Kwe Parker situations are few and far between.

Tinkle is a better coach than Eddie was, too. Oregon State last year was almost as bad as we were in Eddie's final year, but he was doing it with the 4th-youngest team in the country. They'll be better this year so without any turmoil I wouldn't hold my breath.

With the possibilities (or probabilities) of Corey going pro and a transfer or two there'll almost certainly be a scholarship open in the spring. Hoping for Shaq Carter.

And McClung makes my post look stupid in under four hours.

An educated guess was someone could have been asked to delay their signing until the spring and perhaps that wasn't 100% keen with whomever was asked. The landscape of what kids may be available in weeks/months because of the FBI sting coming down on other schools, could open up doors....

The staff frankly has a lot of options they are looking to add for 2018-19 and there was no possible way to add a player like Shaq Carter or Warren Washington (or Jalen Carey is something blows up at Syracuse) if you have everyone signed right now.....asking a player like Carter to be a potential replacement for Freeman/Sa, and sign in the spring, isn't feasible based on how I see things....

I really, REALLY love McClung's game and upside (smart/tough player), but if you gave me a choice of having Carter (if we can get him) signed and secured for the fall with Mathis and Harper, and it cost me McClung, that would be a decision I wouldn't want to make, but if I had to, I would.

There are enough guards on the roster for 2018-19....we need a front court player more right now....and I'm pretty certain based on how well we are doing in recruiting overall, this is not a deal-breaker at all....RU is recruiting at a high level right now....

Not sure we have enough point guards. Geo is a combo guard, Souf will be a senior with no "True" point to groom, at this point during 2018. So if we don't land a 2018 true point guard we will go into 2019 without a true experienced point guard, unless Geo is the answer.

Geo is the answer.....

An ideal situation is a 2019 guard (take your pick of what's out there) more than another 2018 guard....we need a 2018 front court player more than a 2018 guard (especially at PG if you have Mathis and Kiss at SG)....McClung was going to have to battle with Baker and Mensah for minutes next year.....after that, he certainly would find minutes.

Baker, Mathis, Kiss, Harper Jr. and Mensah are your 5 guards on the roster (Bullock notwithstanding at #6....)....do we need another guard?? yes.....ideally, it's 2019, not 2018.....

Front court for 2018.....Doorson (Shaky health wise)....Doucoure, Myles Johnson and Eugene....(with Thiam, but I don't consider him a true front court player....Front court is much thinner than the backcourt....I really like Washington's shooting ability a LOT....I think RU thinks they could land someone else ahead of Washington, whether they do or not remains to be seen.

I didn't see it coming. I thought we had him...at least based on this forum..FWIW.
Can't blame you.
Never understood that sentiment actually. A WC kid who just popped up on the radar & took an official visit to a school 3,000 miles away with no strong ties to the school, area or state?

"We have a very high level of comfort with the coaching staff," the elder Washington explained. "Coach [Gregg] Gottlieb has been recruiting Warren since the 10th grade. Coach [Stephen] Thompson has been tracking Warren for about the same amount of time. Coach [Wayne] Tinkle is a high quality head coach, who personally knows how to play a big. All of them have strong family values.

"We believe the college town environment will allow Warren to focus on his studies and athletic craft."

Apologies ahead of time for my question as I am not that familiar with BB recruiting. If Washington wanted to come here couldn't he have McClungs schollie

Ideally, I like Baker off the ball, with the green light all the time.i do think he can be a pg. Realistically, Sanders should not be going anywhere but we know how that goes. Mensa will be here, and ready to give 15 mins. I see Harper jr as a wing as well.

Agree I like Geo off the ball also, but I am eager to see how coach uses him. How many years has it been since we had a true point guard?

Indeed. He is a willing passer, but a shooter on this roster must have the right to shoot at all times.

If Washington wanted to come here and we wanted him to come here, he would come here, period. We didn't want him badly enough to push him to sign in November. Any stated concerns about overbooking scholarships is IMO a smokescreen used in an attempt to slow play him. Teams overbook all the time and sort it out later.
