My takeaway (which means nothing I know):

Bolin is real deal.

Davidovitz can really kick and accurately. He also got the ball in the end zone.

Anderson should definitely be our punter. Everyone in the stands cheered when he punted over 50 yards.

Lewis IS OUR FUTURE. Big strong accurate and can run.

Blackshear did amazing today.

At the practice, still going on. Blackshear is the real deal. Hicks makes plays and it will be a shame if he rides the bench this year. Just too many running backs on this team, wish they could trade one for depth elsewhere lol. Offense has a lot of work to do, no matter who the quarterback is.

Not sure what Practice people were watching .
We will have a real concern with Passing Accruacy this year. Huge Concern.

Real impressed with Blackshear. He will get time.

No one in this thread complimented the offense

Blackshear looked great. Bolin did not impress me. Weak arm & small. Lewis was impressive. Just a matter of time. He will not redshirt. O-line starters much improved. Temoko looks great/Elor #7 has a good upside. Field goal kicking is brutal. Secondary is solid. Lewis will be the eventual starter this year

Ummmmmmm. Read the OP.
They said the QB is the "real deal ". Based on what ? Surely not on the passing ability today.
That is not a comment on the offense as a whole though, just that he liked what he saw from Bolin. I will say that did not think there was much to be impressed by with any QB. Doesn't mean they can't be effective, but they didn't show a whole lot today.

Edit: sorry, you did call out passing accuracy specifically. I didn't necessarily see a lot of missed throws though, I just don't think there were a lot of open receivers.

Funny how several people can watch the same practice and come away with very different opinions.

I was very impressed with Bolin. I noticed how, even on short swing passes, he put the ball in a place where the receivers can catch it in stride. That'll go a long way to gaining yards after the catch.

I also saw much more talent on offense than I've seen in many years.

The QB group looks much better with Bolin on the team. And I thought Gio just looked like a much more confident, experienced, player now. Lewis is raw but clearly talented.

With the additions of senior Damon Mitchell and freshmen Bo Melton and Everett Wormley joining holdovers from last year Janarion Grant, Juwuan Harris and Dacoven Bailey the receiving corps looks much improved.

Meanwhile, the running backs group might be the deepest on the team. We have 3 experienced seniors in Gus Edwards, Robert Martin and Josh Hicks. And there's some good looking young talent in Blackshear, Trey Sneed and Snorweah.

And, by the way, we have an actual offense coordinator now in Jerry Kill.

Admittedly, it wouldn't take much to improve on last years dismal offense performance, but it seems to me the ingredients are there for a significant improvement on offense.

The last poster said he was very impressed with Bolin.
Standing on the field with the 1st team does not mean he will play better than what we had last year.
I saw numerous passes that were well off target ..in fact a few times Kill talked to him and appeared to try to settle him down.
We all want to see the Offense improve dramatically from last year.. if we don't get better QB play and accuracy it will be difficult.

Everything you said was right on. Bolin didn't look great today in my opinion but he was light years ahead of everyone else. Lewis is coming along and I am very happy to have him for the future.
Davidovitz Is by far the best kicker and Anderson hit 65+ yard punt in the air from the end zone. Major improvements on specials. Blackshear is going to get plenty of action this year. In addition Gus Edwards is going to be the workhorse in the backfield.

Now offense scheme, 4 of the first 12 passes were screen passes and the tight end was heavily targeted. The RB is going to get the ball inside the tackles and catch the ball in the flat. The offense will be multiple multiple multiple. Very good news.

The defense looked strong. If the DL can hold the run (big if), this will be a very good defense.

Don't forget for those watching the offense, the 3 freshmen WRs started today. They will play a lot this year but did not do tremendously well today against the first team D. Grant, D. Mitchell and A. Mitchell were all in green jerseys and Harris did not see the field much today (Precaution?). So considering that, I was okay with what I saw today. Not great but much better than last year.

But Hicks showed signs of life Saturday, with a 66-yard touchdown run during 11-on-11 action with the second-team offense against the second-team defense. It got a big ovation from the crowd.

Hicks broke a tackle and cut back cross the field without slowing down, weaving his way to the opposite corner of the end zone while widening his gap over pursuing tacklers. It came one play after a botched fumble exchange between Hicks and Rescigno.

Go Josh!!!

The First scrimmage of August camp is usually pretty vanilla and sloppy. The next one, probably next Saturday will be more important. Final positions will probably be won or lost in that scrimmage.

IT WAS THE FIRST GOD DAMNED SCRIMMAGE.!!!
The only thing that concerned me was field goal kicking. OOF that was bad. Don't see how scrimmage 2 will be any different for the kickers. We've got problems there. I really hope they all had a bad day on the same day. But what's the odds of that?

What exactly was wrong? The snap? The hold? Accuracy? Distance? All of them? :grimace::grimace:

I was at the scrimmage today. It was not sharp and crisp,..rather sloppy. O line was disappointing, they didn't,t give any of the qbs much time to thrrow. None of the qbs separated themselves from the other, although it appears the coaches have Bolin ahead based on the number of snaps he got with the first unit. hicks ran the ball well when he got his chances, but Edwards was getting most of the snaps with the first unit. the wideouts were having a lot of difficulty getting separation from defenders. This made the passing game difficult. We had a difficult time running the ball in the red zone . Once again, the o line had a lot of problems moving people. Overall, the team looked about what you would expect at this point. I see a lot of potential with this team and am excited got this year.

D. Mitchell did see the Field a lot today. Looked real impressive along with new players Jerome Washington and Blackshear looked real good.

He got a handful of snaps earlier in the practice. They are obviously limiting his snaps hence the green jersey.

Saw him on Special Teams late in the scrimmage.
This guy will be used extensively. We are lucky to have him.
Hopefully his brother will be on the field late in September.

Good thing he's on our team or we would be in big trouble. We'll just have to make our FG attempts with the wind.

Tough time for our returning kicker. He hit the upright from 32 yards, then they had him try a FG from over 50 yards and I'm not sure if it even went 40 yards. I'm sure he's a great kid but he's simply not a Div 1 kicker. The freshman PK from Bridgewater has nice potential.

Can someone tell me why our specila teams coach would send out our returning placekicker to attempt a FG over 50 yards?

Our ST Coach is unfortunately clueless.

It's simple really. Let's say your kicker' s range was 45 yards last year. Have him kick 5 balls from 50 yards and you'll know right away. Doesn't matter whether it is straight, just how far it travels.
Can't make a long FG if you can't kick it far enough. Probably won't increase during the season either.

After recruiting Ito and Federico, it's been very disappointing to see where our FG kicking unit has gone. At this point I can't help to think that falls on Ash and Okruch.
