On a hot summer evening, one of the most refreshing drinks is a cold, crisp martini.

I prefer a gin martini. The flavor and aromatics enhance the refreshment. But it looks like I'm in the minority here. Why the broad appeal of vodka?

I'll let you in on a secret.

99% of the people who claim to have a preference for expensive vodka would embarrass themselves in a blind taste test.

I think more drinks can be made with vodka, so it'll be more popular. IMHO, if u have to add something to drink it do you really like what you're drinking?

I like the occasional martini. I can think of few things I'd less like to drink on a hot, summer evening than a martini - vodka, gin; shaken, stirred; peppered, splashed.

Discuss.

FWIW: Elephant ball sweat - one of the things I'd enjoy sipping less on a hot summer evening than a martini.

Discuss.

Bluecoat Gin by Philly Distillery is solid. That said give me a shot of bourbon or rye whiskey or Scotch over Gin or vodka.

I dont drink either but gin can make people really nasty. Juniper is a depressant.

Gin all the way. Never got the Vodka martini either. Don't people want some taste to their drink other than really strong vermouth? To me Vodka just gets you were you need to go, but the ride is boring as ****.

FIL bought us a duty free Star of Bombay. The booze matched the bottle - simply exquisite.

Screwdriver. OJ to vodka ratio depends on how bad the day was. No plastic bottles though.

Gin is vodka. Juniper flavored vodka. All alcohol is a depressant, but no more so for gin than anything else.

I like both gin and vodka a lot. Favorite drink is Ciroc kept in the freezer with several olives. And all our female guests love my Cosmos. I like to keep in touch with my metrosexual side.

Gin, especially for martinis (splash of vermouth, splash of olive juice, at least three olives.) Vodka seems like more of a young person's drink to me (like, just turned 21 young) as it can be disguised with various sweet flavors.

Speaking of Vodka, how many on the board have tried this? Not too expensive, but a personal favorite

Costco vodka is the way to go if it's your drink of choice.

My daughter in law and her family are Russian and this is what they drink (when they aren't drinking cognac). So, Costco vodka gets the stamp of approval over all other brands. It is pretty smooth.

My personal favorite though, is still gin and tonic. Tanqueray or Bombay would be at the top of my (admitted) short list.

Anyone try "white whiskey" or "white rye". It is whiskey that hasn't been aged so it doesn't get the brown color from the wood. Sounds like a fad and a horrible idea to cut costs without cutting the price.

gimme Gin and Tonic

hard to turn down a good Gin and Tonic.

Hot summer day, Tanqueray and Tonic

Gin and tonic is certainly popular. But I don't know if most people realize that tonic water has almost as much sugar as Coca-Cola.

It's only a fad if you discount about 1000 years of distilling history.

The smell of gin today brings back too many unhappy memories of benders at the Jersey Shore and the mornings after. Never touch the stuff now. Vodka or bourbon.
