Wow! That dude was seriously talented. Everything he touched was gold. His solo music is his best but all of it was amazing.
RIP

When I hear the opening cords to Rust Cage, I will feel sad now, until my time comes.

The album Badmotorfinger is in my top 10.

Thefour opening songs are better than 5 cups of coffee in the morning to get the blood flowing. What a voice he had.

EDIT:
Kurt Cobain of Nirvana (how did I forget?)
Layne Staley of Alice in Chains.
Scott Weiland of Stone Temple Pilots.
Chris Cornell of Soundgarden.

That only leaves Eddie Vedder from the big grunge bands of the 1990's.

Man, that last part of the NYT article is scary:
Mr. Cornell said the group had decided to finally bring its songs to life to honor Mr. Wood. “I thought, well, this is one thing that I can do to remind myself and maybe other people of who this guy is and was and keep his story and in a way his life with us,” he said.

RIP Chris Cornell....wow awful and shocking news to wake up to. A big fan of his music with Soundgarden. That makes 4 of the 5 biggest grunge bands of the 90s who have lost their lead singers to early deaths. As a big fan of the genre, it seems like it is just being wiped from this earth:cry:

Kurt Cobain...Nirvana
Layne Staley...Alice In Chains
Scott Weiland...Stone Temple Pilots
Chris Cornell...Soundgarden

one would have to think that years and years of prior drug use took a toll on his body even if he wasnt using today.

Being reported that he was found with something around his neck. I'm hoping it's not a suicide but who knows. Terrible if it's true

Grunge saved rock and roll for me after the late 80's period of not so great rock and roll. Favorite band was Nirvana. Favorite lead singer was Chris Cornell. The dude sang like an angel, but with POWER. Such a musical presence. RIP, Chris.

Horrible news. One of my favorite bands in my middle school years was Soundgarden. Chris was amazing in most every musical endeavor he took.

Horrible. Why?
https://www.clickondetroit.com/news/rocker-chris-cornell-has-died-at-age-52-in-detroit

Sources tell Local 4 Cornell's wife called a family friend and asked him to check on the singer. That friend forced open the hotel room door where Cornell was found dead in the bathroom with something around his neck.

Sources said it appears to be a suicide.

I had been listening to Audioslave lately , great sound with Cornell and Tom Morello. Terrific rock voice and persona. A huge loss to the rock world.

I would include Dave Grohl even though he wasn't lead singer.

Music is so subjective. But I would not consider anything Dave Grohl did post-Nirvana grunge. Can't put my finger on it, but the word "lame" comes to mind when I think Foo Fighters. Again, many will disagree with this, but Grohl does not belong in the group of great grunge front men and singers.

I think Mother Love Bone had the potential to be a massive band. That one record of theirs is very good and emotional, especially when put into context.

The Chris Cornell song on the Singles soundtrack was always my favorite track by him.

Speaking of Andrew Wood, I heard Far Behind by Candelbox the other day (Remember them? I always liked a few of their songs but heard they were downright AWFUL live in concert) and I never knew until I looked it up that that entire song is about Andrew Wood.

Anyways, just awful news of Chris. Had an angelic voice... rock angel that is.

Sad to hear the news of someone dying that young.

I was never a huge fan of either of the bands he was in, more because I wasn't exposed to a lot of it, so I didn't know he was the lead singer. But I was wondering why his name was so familiar as I had heard it recently, then it came to me: he did a fantastic cover last year of Nothing Compares 2 U after Prince passed away. Here it is:

How you doin'!

I completely agree. Dave/Pat Foo Fighters might be one of the definitive 90s "alternative" bands. I just feel that Dave (Nirvana pre-Pat) was such a big part of the early Seattle "grunge" scene even though he wasn't lead singer.

What a voice, you know exactly who it is after one bar. Been listening to Soundgarden all morning, can't believe how well it has aged (not necessarily the case for all my mid-20'/early 1990's favorites).

Why anyone would want to be a rock star (or just famous for that matter) is beyond me.

@Rokodesh @Knight Shift @bac2therac & others who were really into AIC/Soundgarden/STP etc. back in the early 1990's, what are you listening to now? Curious to see if our musical tastes continued to track in the same direction or separated completely as we've aged.

I was born in 87, and grunge was my favorite music as early as I can remember (like 93-94). I still listen to mostly 80s/90s stuff. I would say probably 70% of the music I listen to is from that era. GNR, RHCP, ACDC, Soundgarden, BIG, Tupac, etc. the other 30% is a mix between Motown (which I love) and modern music that I'll come across that I like. I think most modern music is terrible, but that's whats popular nowadays.

Modern artists that I like:
Kenny Chesney
Eric Church
Kip Moore
Zac Brown Band
The Neighbourhood
The War on Drugs

I don't really follow any bands actively anymore like I used to, nor wait for albums to be released. I just don't have that same interest or connection.

AIC/Soundgarden/STP. LOL.

Seriously, however, if we are talking "newer" bands, Car Seat Headrest is the only one that comes to mind.
Metallica, Clutch and Corrosion of Conformity are still putting out great, hard rocking music.
Still a Springsteen and Southside Johnny fan.
I mostly listen to Ozzy's Boneyard, Lithium, Hair Nation and Underground Garage on Sirius/XM. When I am listening to stuff from my collection, it is mostly Corrosion of Conformity, Rollins Band, Black Flag, Radiohead, Death Cab for Cutie, Screaming Trees, Rage Against the Machine, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes and a bunch of other stuff.
