Have an idea about our free throw shooting

In an article about our chances to get 3 more wins to have
an above 500 season, Jerry Carino says we must get better with the
free throws. So I have a couple of suggestions what do you guys think?
First have a practice with just free throwing, any one missing three has
to get naked. But I have a back up plan, if the first doesn't work, anyone
who misses a shot gets the ball thrown at them while the coach screams
expletives. Sounds good right?

There's only one way this team gets better at FT shooting:

Take 500/day, EVERY day, from the day this season ends until next season begins.

Group therapy?

tertiary (sp?) way

S&C is #1

i'll bet Corey and Nigel in practice make 85+% of FTs.

Quite frankly the work should be on their jump shots. I don't know what Corey is doing in a catch and shoot situation and Nigel has side spin rotation on his shot. Issa we all know needs to a totally revamp.

Definitely don't want to minimize the importance of FT shooting though. Psychology could certainly be an issue here.

Sorry @Scarlet Shack but I'm not buying what you're selling my brotha'! Guys going 0-for-4 or 1-for-6 in the 1st half has nothing to do with S&C. Skinny little Duke guards hitting 90%+ plus has nothing to do with S&C. Practice, practice, practice.

Make the team run all the way to the top of the RAC, then back down, then make 20 FTs. Then do it again. You have to complete it all in 10 minutes or you have to run 4 laps around the track out back. Then do it again. You keep doing it until you complete the task 3 straight times. If you can't do it, you keep doing it until they lock the doors to the RAC at night.

Has a lot to do with S&C, IMO. Hitting FTs over and over again in a line is much diff then doing it in game situation, IMO.

First time I have heard Strength and Conditioning linked to foul shooting. It's concentration, not rushing and being relaxed, using the same form and follow thru every time you shoot.

Ever wonder why so many guys miss the first and make the second ? Because they rushed the first shot. Then they calmed down and nail the second.

We should try it. It just might work.

These are collegiate athletes, not 50-year old guys who drink 3-4 nights per week, it's NOT about S&C. I just can't buy that and, again, why do we have trouble hitting them at the beginning of games as well? And at the beginning of the 2nd half? When you can answer those 2 questions, without saying "S&C," you'll have your answer.

2 to go home is the best way to simulate a FTs in a game. Every practice ends with a selected player who has to make 2 FTs to end practice. He misses everyone has to run.

A simple solution -- and maybe they already do this, not sure? -- would be to analyze each gameday free throw attempted and try to find out what exactly can be "corrected" with a simple change to each player's FT "routine".

For example, if a guy tends to rush the first attempt, have them do a more elaborate routine to slow him down.
Or if a guy forgets to use their legs, incorporate a couple dribble squats.
Guy doesn't aim right? Line up their arm.

Lots of things you can do.

Just don't change the actual shot/form -- that'll probably do more harm than good...

not all a cumulative thing. only partial. maybe the heart rate 5 BPM higher after the same activity 10 minutes left in the 1st half VS. 5 minutes left in the game.

Some of our players don't have a consistent pre shot FT routine. Either some are afraid of missing or just don't get how important the shot is. i can't stand when 1 of our players just goes up and shoots it and then 45 seconds latter shows frustration for missing it.

Free throw shooting is a lot like a golf swing. You need a consistent pre-shot routine, good consistent form, tons of practice and to be able to clear your mind and let muscle memory take over when the time comes and the pressure is on. A lot of people can hit ten FT in a row at practice but put them on the line in a game with the pressure on and they're barely 50%.

You are correct. Made percentage for free throws are always higher in practice than games. Pressure to shoot them during game is different.

The art of hitting foul shots was a casualty of how the game is played in America. They are simply not sexy. It is akin to the extra point in football. I would bet a lot of the posters on this board could shoot a fairly high percentage of these shots when they were early teenagers.
Today's players are all about style instead of fundamentals.
I read something about one of our olympic skeet shooters and her training regimen. Her coach would have her shoot .50 straight shots at one of the stations. If she made it, she could move onto the next station and do the same thing. As soon as she missed a shot, she had to go back and start all over again! She claims that she quickly learned the value of every shot.
Maybe do something like this during a practice and when you hit a certain number in a row, you could hit the showers.

Green Rice Fig. That's the ticket. Once you got the form, etc down and you're hitting a good % in practice, put the pressure on. Players (particularly on this team) don't mind sacrificing themselves, they don't want to let their teammates down. So if they don't make X in a row, Their teamates suffer. Now THAT'S pressure.

Maybe it's the water in New Jersey-----Seton Hall 60 % as a team from the foul line one of the NCAA's worst.

Then again maybe we over analyze this stuff the truth is they just can't shoot.

I think the jump shooting factor is at the heart of the problem. I bet the percentage of good jump shooters who are poor free throw shooters is pretty low. Using the same reasoning, how many good free throw shooters suck from the field? Not many, I'm sure.

Somehow, make more FGs and don't get fouled, save the embarrassment. Whatever we're doing in practice isn't translating over to game time. A perfect storm of bad shooters.

The staff has to get Corey to slow down. Take your time. The lower your heart rate the better your success. Use some of the 10 seconds allotted and the heart rate goes down and the percentage goes up.

He is like me with a 4 foot putt. Don't want to take time. Know you shouldn't miss it and just want to get done with it. 15 foot putt different story.

I honestly believe much of this is in the kids heads. They are thinking too much about they might miss and it has spread throughout the team. I also think slowing down might just help a bit.
