We are in a brutal division-not much you can do about it. Going to take a LOT to get to the top of this division - you have 3 of the top legendary teams of all time who have seemingly endless pockets. On top of that these schools recruit themselves. We were all wishing for better comp when we we were in conference hell - well we got what we wanted in spades - careful what you wish for.

It is what it is. We can complain about it or we can yank on our bootstraps and get to work. I argue that we started in the same place as Maryland. The two schools split close decisions the first two years. Year three under new coaches, they stomped on us and Durkin has signed one solid class and one exceptional class. Ash got a solid second class. Need to continue to build on it.

Just as a comparison...

The seven teams in the East Division had an average rank of 25.6 (the six non-RU teams averaged 22.8)
The average rank over the last four years is 29.9 (the six non-RU teams averaged 26.0)

The seven teams in the West Division had an average rank of 46.3
The average rank over the last four years is 50.4

We have a steep hill to climb in this division. If our last four classes were all ranked 25th... our four year average would still come out as 5th in the East Division.

PSU rebounding the way they have, and now Md getting into the mix is a bit discouraging.

Gotta buckle up that chin strap.

We have a tremendous upside - perhaps higher than any team in the NCAA. It's a matter of execution and some time. There's never been a Big 10 team in the NYC market before...just wait...magic will happen.
And as I have said on here before...

I submit the upside doesn't even have to be that high to get tangible results. Real tangible results.

Careless how they arranged the East-West divisions. Should be like this.

East - West
Osu - Mich
Psu - Msu
Neb - Wisc
RU - Md
Purdue - Iowa
Ill - Ind
Nah.

I like it the way it is. Geographically it's correct IMO.

I could go along with a North/South set up like this...

North
Michigan
MSU
Northwestern
Wisconsin
Iowa
Minnesota
Nebraska

South
RU
PSU
Maryland
tOSU
Purdue
Indiana
Illinois

Not perfect but not bad either IMO.

That there are 4 B1G teams ranked in the top 17(rivals) and they are all in the East.

Meanwhile we finish ahead of 5 B1G teams, and 4 of them are out West.

"High tide raises all boats" To play in arguably the best conference in the country should be a benefit maybe not in the win column but in getting kids that want to compete with the best. The $$ will be there in 4 years to allow us to have a chance to compete at the highest level.

Getting into the top three in the Big Ten's East Division will be a very difficult road to hoe. You will have to climb over one of the following: Michigan, Ohio State or Penn State. Additionally, Michigan State is no slouch and thirteen months ago was part of the playoff group of four. To make matters even more difficult is the fact that D.J. Durkin appears to be quite the recruiter in College Park. Rutgers University finds itself in a very difficult position; and yes, there is an imbalance in the overall strength of the two divisions. I would be shocked if the conference was realigned, save for adding additional schools someday.

A few years ago people said the SEC west was too hard because of Bama and LSU. Since then Auburn, Ole Miss and Miss St have all had huge years. Even Arkansas has spent most of its time as a top 25 team. While perhaps some corners were cut by the second tier of the division the fact is that they all upped their game. If we don't step up we'll continue to be a division doormat.

I'd prefer a different split.

East- Rutgers
West- Everyone else

Residing alone in the B1G East brings to mind that famous philosopher, Ty Webb, (Chevy Chase) from Bushwood Country Club- "I guess you'll just have to keep beating yourself . . ." ;-)

This formula hasn't worked out so well for Vandy and Kentucky in football.

That's because their "boats" have leaks that need to be plugged.

Maybe we got to go to a rotating schedule with 1 team yearly "rival".. no divisions.. just pair the top two ranked teams to play in the conference championship. Though that practically guarantees only 1 team in a 4 team playoff situation.

Ohio State & Michigain would not agree with realignment unless they could play each other every year, therefore they are in same division.

when we were in the Big East people here cried that the schedule was too easy
now that we are in the B1G East people here are crying that the schedule is too hard

make up your minds already!

Jesus embrace the challenge!! This is what we should want!! We play in the best division in college football. We have a young coach who is a straight shooter facilities being upgraded and are located in very very fertile recruiting grounds. I wouldn't want to be in any other situation to be totally honest.

Sure they could as a/the regular crossover. You could do the same for Northwestern/Illinois if they felt they couldn't bare to be apart either.

As I said, I like the set up the way it is now. Seems the most correct IMO. But if you wanted to change it the North/South thing is the closest thing to the way it is now.

Life and that includes college football is cyclical. But that being said, it will take a truly herculean task to ever be on the level of Ohio State and Michigan as long as folks like Meyer and Harbaugh coach there.

But there is absolutely no reason that we cannot compete year in and year out with Penn State, Michigan State and Maryland.

And as I have said before we wouldn't have to get to the tOSU or UM levels to get the tangibles results we all want.

A 3rd place or a consistent "in the mix" showing in the B1G East would do wonders for Rutgers.

Nobody else can really say that in CFB. And it annoys some because it's true.

They find the idea of potentially playing back to back weeks and having a champ game rematch that devalues "the game" unpalatable.

Penn State will be leaving Michigan State and Maryland in the dust here shortly (and will probably beat Michigan by double digits next season, FWIW).

If you don't think PSU will present a major challenge moving forward, you're underestimating the challenge at hand in this division.
