Has anyone thought about what away games they might be going to this year? I do one per year (not counting Maryland) and am looking for some advice.

I have heard from people (can't find it in the forums) that Nebraska was a great away game to attend. This one seems attractive too because the weather should be good for late September.

Michigan and PSU are obviously big games to attend but don't know if I want to do those this year.

Illinois is interesting.

I've been to Indiana but I don't know how much a game day experience they have.

Would love some advice! I'm 28 and would be bringing my wife and a couple of others if that helps.

I think Nebraska is an easy choice for you.

1. Iconic program.
2. September weather.
3. You'll have plenty of chances to see UM and PSU.

This year my plans are:

1) RU @ Nebraska (love that it's in September....pale girls in less clothing lol)
2) LSU home game
3) RU @ Michigan/Penn State

...been to Illinois before, not bad, but we'll be there every-other-year.

Illinois is in the west division. Unless I missed some news, trips there will be few and far between.

Am already booked for illinois. Hotels and travel to Lincoln seems very difficult but will try to finagle it somehow. Immediately thought Illinois as it offers the best chance to see a road W. I have traveled to many games and haven't had a great road W since Arkansas in 2012.

You are young enough to visit the B1G East stadiums in the future. As the previous poster said, visiting B1G west venues will be more difficult. I have been to 8 B1G away games in the past 3 years, and by far, my visit to Nebraska was the best experience. It is a 'cathedral' of college football. The people couldn't be nicer. The game day experience was outstanding. The stadium is downtown. People gather in the Haymarket area before the game and walk en masse to the stadium. Likewise, after the game they return to Haymarket and watch baseball or football on a huge outdoor screen.
Unfortunately, my mobility is becoming more impaired, so I have to limit my travels this year. I hope I can make Illinois only because I've never been to Champaign. If I could, I would go to Nebraska in a heartbeat!

Even though Maryland is a 'home' game, not sure I will make the trek to Yankee Stadium.

Actually Illinois is our designated B1G West yearly opponent, meaning we will be playing them home and away every year for some period of time. At least it is not Nebraska or Wisconsin. We will play Illinois more than any other West team

Would definitely do Nebraska. We did that a few years ago and loved it. Was tempted to make that our trip again, even though it would be a repeat. Everyone is extremely friendly, there is a great bar/restaurant area, awesome stadium atmosphere. I would give it a 10/10.

They're our cross-over. Now with 9 conference games every team has one and we got each other. Currently scheduled every season into the foreseeable future.

Nebraska was a great trip, with unseasonable warm weather for late October 2014. I stayed in Omaha (and watched the Royals in the World Series in the largest sports bar ever.) Lincoln is a great college town. When do we get to play at Northwestern? I love road trips to Chicago.

Interesting we are getting Nebraska again, when we haven't played Northewestern yet. I guess everything reset with the 9 game schedule.

Also strange we aren't doing home and home with the west division teams, excluding Illinois of course.

Live in Omaha. You should do Nebraska. One of the best college atmospheres bar none. Approaching 300 consecutive sell outs. If Lincoln hard then stay in Omaha. Lots to do and only 45 minutes to Lincoln

Kids will have off from school Thurs and Fri before the Nebraska game for Rosh Hashanah so we will do a 4 day weekend to Omaha and Lincoln.

Yep went to PSU for the stripe out. Cool tailgating scene with all the RVs, but you can go to a NASCAR race and see the same thing. A nice little college town with a main street with restaurants and bookstores, etc, but nothing you don't see in Ann Arbor or East Lansing (State Streets in both) or Columbus or ... and those are all better than Happy Valley. Plus their panther growl is v annoying. Wouldn't go back unless it's a meaningful game. UM like someone said you will have chances. A cool venue (but I'm telling you it doesn't look that impressive on the inside, because seats are packed together and it's one bowl) and a good town but campus is all spread out with busses, like RU. Never been to Lincoln or Champaign, so will try to get to one or both.

Champaign is nothing special as far as college towns go. Best bet is to hang in Chicago and then make the 2.5 hr INCREDIBLY boring drive (corn, corn, corn, and more corn) to Champaign for the game.

Even Purdue, with their "breakfast club" 10-square block or so of bars that open about 4-hours after they close, on game day morning, is a much better bar-scene than Champagne (from what I can recollect, lol...). Illinois has a fantastic "Greek" party scene, however, no doubt.

I'm planning on going to them all again.

Both Lincoln and Ann Arbor are great trips. Super venues, iconic teams, nice towns.

Lincoln is more friendly, to a almost crazy extent. Hearing 90,000+ Huskers go completely silent when their QB goes under center is nearly more breathtaking than the loudest venue I've ever been in. Not easiest to get to but worth it.

Ann Arbor has better eateries and other ancillary stuff that might interest the better half if she is a reluctant football fan. Easy drive from Detroit.

If you have to pick one, I'd say Lincoln for the B1W opportunity as others mention.

Been to both Bloomington and Champaign -Urbana. They are on the sleeper-er end of the B1G venue spectrum from my experience. Not saying not to go to either, but you have better choices.

I wouldn't encourage anybody not to go to PSU. I have had good experiences there and it is can be a great stadium atmosphere. Once you get to State College it's nice enough. But the interminable drive from any civilized spot is tiresome. Unless you like Pennsylvania Dutch country and want to make that part of the trip this heads toward the bottom in desirability for me.

That presser was from 2013. Illinois is definitely our crossover annual game and if you look at the calendar through the next 5 years you will see home and away with Illinois every year. there is no schedule yet published after that but that game will still continue.
Nothing has changed since the announcement. The first two years with 8 games were one off schedules. The new scheduling started this year with the 9 game schedule. Instead of just rotating teams they are going to parity scheduling which is the big way of saying we reserve the right to have the best teams play each other on tv and let the crappy teams play each other. So if Rutgers continues to play poorly you will see more games against Illinois and Purdue in the crossover then games with Wisconsin and Nebraska.

We are in the same boat - one away game each year. Last year it was Minnesota. Before that TTFP, and before that was Ohio State. Might be Nebraska this year based on above comments.

May go to TTFP, but will have to stay in Pittsburgh. You can't find a hotel within 100 miles of State College on game day.

Book hotels way in advance for big ten games. Most big cities have a Hyatt on or near campus. You should always use the buy Hyatt points mile scam for gameday weekends. For example champaign for two nights at the haytt is over $700. With purchasing miles and using them it's under $350. If anyone ever wants help booking away games let me know . I am an amateur travel coordinator.

Nebraska for me. Missed the first game there. Hotel reservations made in the Fall (you have to snag them a year out). One word about Lincoln: Haymarket!

Any suggestions for a Nebraska trip? I'm assuming fly into Omaha but what about any hotel suggestions, maybe stay a night in Omaha, etc?

Very quick and easy drive (like just over an hour) from Omaha. We stayed one night in the old town in Omaha , it wasn't like super exciting but its a fun district to walk around and have lots of bars and restaurants. Went to Lincoln the day before the game. I stayed in the Embassy Suites which is super close to the stadium but I was lucky to get that (thanks to Huskers on this board). There are tons of hotel options but book EARLY

Where are you coming from. There are hotels available much closer than Pittsburgh.
Coming from South Carolina. My wife works a hotel chain that just opened up a property in downtown Pittsburgh so we get the employee rate there.

Nebraska is running around $350-400 from Newark right now leaving Thursday and coming home Sunday. Mapquest has it at just over 19 hours and 1280 miles.
