There is a group of about 50 students in the front row of the student section who are determined to bring back the RAC-moshpere. They come to every game and are loud and fully engaged. But they need a lot more help. The student section was half empty and the lower level of the RAC was 1/3 empty as many season ticket holders were absent. Only about 3500 in total there last night. Those who were there did cheer decently and helped the team when they needed it. But the RAC is still light years behind where it once was as a hostile environment.

3500 might have been too generous. The crowd did get very load at times. I think the crowd helped influence the ejection of one of the FDU players after a flagrant foul. They didn't even go to the video to look at it until the crowd went nuts about after the play. Freeman had to come out of the game. It sound like the crowd was getting ready to lynch the refs after that play. It was the 3rd time that Freeman got hit in the face by that same guy. The other 2 times were in contesting the rebounds Freeman got. I wrote those off as acidents/incedental, but the same guy hooks Williams head knocking him to the ground in the second half when Williams was going in for a layout on the baseline. The follow through made it look like he was throwing Williams to the ground. There should have been a flagrant on that one IMO. Freeman got taken out in much the same way when he was laying it in on a baseline drive.

Decent crowd. It's a bear coming down 287 rush hour for a 7:00 game. Yes I know it's TV and B1G Network or lol, B1G plus, whatever that is, but like the noon football games, crowds are going to suffer a little for TV. Price you pay.

attendance was announced as 3635...might be the first time all year I think they used actual figures, its been inflated by at least 500 a game this year sometimes more

Just wait until BIG play the crowds and student section will be fine. This is also finals time for students.

We're playing all cupcakes in OOC play and just came off a 7 win season! Not to mention what this program has been through before that. Not sure what people are expecting.

For the folks who are attending, they are fully engaged and boisterous. Just you wait until conference play starts and the students return. It has the potential of students lining up outside the doors to get in to pack the place. I like where this season is going.

Unfortunately the first two home games which are winnable are during break. Are the students back by the 21th for Nebraska, a Saturday..I hope its not noon

Finals time, no name opponent. Not unexpected.

I am curious to see what PSU brings and then how many students show up when school is in session after MLK day.

Yes students will be back from Nebraska on 1/21. That should be a great atmosphere that game

A noon tip will be a tough sell on that day (1/21) for some.

I don't think it can be emphasized enough how crucial the Penn State game is on New Year's Day. Just a lot of road games in the early going of conference play that will be extremely tough to win. We don't want a zero in the win column in late January for a lot of reasons.

Pen St won't bring many fans to the RAC
Their alums/fans have little interest in the MBB program plus their football team has a Rose Bowl game the next day.

When RU starts convincing the casual fan it's real, attendance will be far better, in my opinion.

As a season ticket holder, I was there and engaged along with the 3 people with me. I know it was "only" FDU, and it was finals time, but the crowd last night for a 10-1 team was very disappointing. They say attendance was around 3500 but I looked up at the 200 and 300 sections on both sides and there were about 100 people on each side . This team deserves better not just from the students but from the alumni. Yes we have been bad and the fans have been beaten down but this team is fun to watch and will need the bigger crowds for the Big 10 conference games to pull out the W's.

High school basketball in Morris County draws student crowds larger than the ones we see at the RAC.

With all due respect, it is finals time for the students. It has been posted before. Students are trying to win, too, ya know?

It wasn't the student section that was so bad; it was the rest of the building.

wow, sorry to hear this. I was hoping I had missed a real turnout and atmosphere.
(I do like that I can use my big mouth and be clearly heard by the refs most games these days..but 'd prefer to lose my voice with 8000 others)

Not talking about the students . They were fine and loud! I was talking about the grow ups. The adult attendance was particularly disappointing..

its not surprising considering its a no name opponent in December, people who follow RU hoops feel a buzz but everyone else not so much. Start winning Big 10 games and they will start coming, students included. We have gone through this dance many years in the past 20 after fairly decent starts with no one showing up until the conference schedule comes around

Student section was 2/3 full. Not bad considering what most of this cohort has gone through.

No one who is a season ticket holder thinks it is not surprising. But with a 9-1 start coming off the last 5 years , it is disappointing more casual , alumni and fans did not come on a Wednesday night way before Christmas to check out the team out of pure curiosity

Sunday at msg will have a sparse crowd too, but I think a lot of RU fans are going to come out of the woodwork for next Friday @ Seton Hall.
Imagine what a win vs The Hall would do for the psyche of the RU fanbase.

Sad but true. However, everybody loves a winner. So, if RU can keep winning at home in conference, which won't be easy, the students will come back.

My schedule doesn't allow me to make it to most games, but was there last night... bought a ticket in the 300s and had my pick of seats pretty much anywhere in the 200 section. Was really hoping that after a 9-1 start, with an opponent we should beat, and no home game until 1/1 that it would have bumped the attendance.

I disagree with you. I do not see great RU attendance here..bad time and bad day to have the game, its so close to XMas, it will even hurt SHU's own fans attendance

I don't what everybody's talking about with regards to the student section. It was pretty full and by the far the biggest student turnout since the 1st game. I was actually shocked how full it looked. The Riot Squad was more active than any game all season. The rest of the arena was empty.

Disappointing given it was a in-state game but:

1) Christmas/Chanukah approaching
2) Exam period
3) If a 7pm game thats gotta be early for many who work+traffic
4) It was a TV finale night including "Survivor"
5) For those who have financial choices to make a B1G game is definitely more appealing.
6) Season tickets have become so expensive over the years potential fans aren't following the team to begin with. SELL THOSE 300 LEVEL SEATS AS SEASON TICKETS!

It will get better-perhaps MUCH better-once the B1G schedule hits (and if we keep winning/"stealing" a few). Seton Hall game a HUGE game for perception.
