Not going to happen, but would be sweet:
Chip Kelly because he misses the East coast and isn't cutting it in the NFL?
Mark Helfrich-he can prove himself here and that Oregon made a mistake
Lane Kiffin-because he wants the challenge
Kendal Briles from Baylor- because he needs the job

Realistic choices:
Kevin Wilson--too risky considering the circumstances of his departure
Todd Fitch- Louisiana Tech OC- 5th year as OC under Skip Holtz. Coached with Ash at Iowa State in 2004-06
Brian Wright- fired by Charlie Partridge at FAU, lit it up at Toledo this year
Darell Hazell- no OC experience; success at Kent State but failed at Purdue; Jersey guy.

Others?

Something tells me this will be a big hire. Ash is a smart guy - knows the fan base was unhappy with Mehringer - he's going to go with a proven guy to save his own @ss.

The media said nothing regarding kevin Wilson transgressions so, if we hired him, the media shouldn't have anything to say.

Kevin Wilson was someone I had wanted at one time as a possible OC when he was a little shaky at IU but now with our past Mike Rice issues and the reasons for his IU departure make him untouchable.

I've mentioned Matt Lubick the Oregon OC this past year as a possible but he's also light on experience. Helfrich himself of course would be a good choice but not realistic.

Maybe Jeff Quinn who was OC at Cincy under Brian Kelly. He's a consultant/adviser at ND now after a failed stint as Buffalo HC.

Some of the Baylor guys might be too toxic and their offense may not be an exact fit but they have run the ball more than you may think. I wouldn't call it a power spread though. Not sure if they would like to leave the area any more than Mehringer did. Maybe Randy Clements their run game coordinator. I don't know if the Briles name would go over well up here.

Rightttttt. The moment he stepped into NJ they'd have a ton to say and none of it would be good.
And there was nothing in the press about JH until she signed on as the RU AD. Still would give Wilson a serious look if he is game. Have a feeling he will go to NFL though.

I think you're onto something here. Perhaps Hobbs can come up with a few $$$ and allow Ash to make a big hire. Would be awesome for the program

On coaching acumen he'd be a home run in my book but it's not always that simple. Same can be said for Art Briles but obviously on a bigger scale.

Jeff Quinn is interesting--what kind of offense does/did he run?

I assume the same as Kelly did, a spread but I think he has a tendency to lean more on the passing game than on the run game. Thing is I don't know that it has to be an exact fit, it's not as if these guys are morons at least I don't think so lol.

If you're a pro style OC then the transition to a sort of spread maybe there is an adjustment and issues like we saw with Shawn Watson going with Charlie Strong from Louisville to Texas. But if you're a spread OC who maybe throws the ball more I don't think it's as much of a transition to being a being a power spread OC which might rely on the run more. It's still about getting people in space and trying to make plays and stretching the field. At least that's my take. I think a good play caller and good mind can make the adjustment. I don't know that Tom Herman called the same kind of offense at all his stops at OC from the lower level on up, he adapted and adjusted.

Brian Wright's story is an interesting one. He was initially praised for changing to the spread, but when Charlie Partridge came in, it seemed he wanted to go to a non-spread, and did not recruit QBs to fit the spread. When the dual thread QB went down in 2015, FAU's offense went with it, as he was hampered and could not run (sound familiar?).

I doubt Ash really takes into consideration the fans wanting a proven guy, nor should he. He should choose the person that he thinks is the best to run this offense successfully. The fans' perception of the hire shouldn't be a factor.

The problem with big time hires is if they are successful, they leave. We don't need another new coordinator after next year. That's why Mehringer was thought to be more likely to stay with the program.

Tim Beck at OSU is thought to be in trouble as Co-OC for Urban. If Ash wants somebody he is familiar with and runs his offense he might be a target. Whether Urban wants him gone or not he may want the job as the only OC instead of the passing game one. His QB coaching/development has been subpar for Urban is what is rumored.

He is a rising coach. He got that job because I think he is married to Tommy's daughter. I think he will go to the NFL somewhere.

- interesting - looked it up - he is actually married to Mike Sherman's daughter - and thus his first coaching gig at Texas A&M

Ideally Ash identifies somebody who has lived through the successful installation & operation of the power spread - knows how to refine it - diagnose hiccups - tweak it - and dial it in for best results.... and not somebody who is learning it while trying to teach it

OR, how about Mark Mangino. The offensive guru who took Kansas to the Orange Bowl not too long ago. He's now with the fightn' Pelini's at Youngstown St and in the playoffs, So what he's not skinny. Enough of that anti girth bias we heard with Ralph Fridgeon . This is not a beauty contest... it's Football goll damnit !

I'll see your Mark Mangino and raise you with Charlie Weis. Let's hire them both as co-OC's, and they can figure out which plays they should not use from their Kansas playbooks.

His twitter handle is keepsawinwood. We could take Keep Chopping, Keep Sawing Wood and Fence the Garden and work them into making picket garden fences.
