I have to catch a JetBlue flight out of JFK on a Saturday morning at 8am, Haven't driven that way since the 80s. I assume the best way to go is through Staten Island, over the V-Bridge and the Belt Parkway. I assume this route is fine at 6am on a Saturday. My plan right now is to get a ride there and worry about getting home later. I get back the following Saturday at 2pm. I'm considering mass transit on the way back (AirTrain to subway to NYPS or AT to LIR to NYPS). Anyone with experience care to offer any tips ?

You should be fine at that time. Some here will NEVER drive through Staten Island, but I've done it twice int he last few months with no issues. My luck will run out soon. If you do not have the Waze app on your phone, download it. I'm not a App guy, but Waze is fabulous and will steer you around trouble spots.

Good question / timing- I'm interested in the responses you get as I'm driving there next Thursday from Monmouth county for a 8am flight but plan on parking at jfk

Great tip about waze. I will make sure my "navigator", the wife, has it loaded.

I thought about driving and parking there. You planning on parking right in the airport or are there cheaper private options ? If I can park for $10-$15 a day that's a possibility. Much higher than that it becomes cost prohibitive.

Long term parking at Newark is $6 per 8 hours.

I'm sure JFK is higher, but in the neighborhood.

If JFK allows Uber pickups , it might be cheaper and easier to take an Uber both ways.

If you park at JFK add another 30-40 minutes minimum to your trip. I play it very safe and set an extra hour aside. Whether you use JFK's long term parking or a private lot, you'll always have to wait some time for an available shuttle and you will usually have several travelers with you going to different terminals. You've been warned.

I'm driving to JFK this Sunday, for a 6 a.m. flight. On Saturday/Sunday mornings prior to 8 a.m., drivers to JFK through Staten Island and Brooklyn (I prefer Outerbridge->Verrazano) should encounter little to no traffic, barring something freaky.

Landing Saturday at 2 p.m. may lend itself better to mass transit. My suggestion would be Port Authority AirTran monorail to Queens Jamaica Station -> MTA E-train into Manhattan -> NJTransit North Jersey Coastline or Northeast Corridor train, depending on where in central Jersey you are..

Taking mass transit back from JFK on a weekend is very easy but will take some time. Short shuttle train over to Jamaica where you can pick up either the LIRR to Penn Station or the subway (E Train) that will eventually get you to Penn. NJ Transit home. I'd recommend the LIRR as multiple lines all merge at Jamaica so you will not have to wait long to catch a train to Penn Station. Just a bit more expensive.

Leave nj at 5:30 am on a sat you will be at JFK by 6:15 . coming back on a saturday at 2pm there will be traffic but if you have 2-3 folks in your group car is the best alternative if just you then mass transit through Manhattan

I drive to Long Island all the time, OBX-VNB to Belt. At that time on a Saturday morning, you should be fine.

At that time during the week though, you could/will be hitting road construction on the Belt which will throw things for a bit of a loop.

There is also some construction on the Verrazano, but nothing to be too concerned with at that time.

I usually fly out of JFK from the shore. I take the route you siggested but I would leave around 5 am. You can park at one of the off site parking lots for about $12 per day. I have used this option and the car has always been secure.

What time should I leave Monmouth county on Thursday morning for an 8:40 am flight to Bahamas?

Took a flight out of JFK to Punta Cana a month ago for a vacation. I live in Holmdel (which is also Monmouth county), and flew out at a similar time (but on a Sunday morning.) You should be at the airport 2 hours before the flight, and at that time, allow 1.5 hours to drive/park.So 5am is reasonable, as per Cicero. I used theparkingspot.com. for my parking, and it was very efficient. There are other off-site parking sites for a few dollars per day cheaper, but reading Google reviews on many of those places make you think twice. They have a coupon on their website for JFK for $17/day, $110 for a week. Buses are distinctive, which makes them easy to spot when coming out of the airport to go home. If you go with them, definitely reserve in advance, because the lot will fill up.
