OT - 2-3 Night Summer getaway

I know there is another one of these posts every other week, so I apologize for starting yet a new one... but here I am.

5 year wedding anniversary coming up. We have a baby, and this will be the first few nights consecutive that we will be getting away without her. I'd love to fly somewhere, (Bermuda, Nantucket, Charleston), wife wants to drive somewhere... Atlantic City, or the like. We go to LBI pretty regularly every weekend of the summer, as we have a place down there, so that option is out. I guess I'd consider Cape May, but have no clue where to stay that's reasonable.

Any recommendations for early August? I'm hesitant to try Charleston in August, as I think it would be too hot... We're looking for a combo of R&R and dinners/night life.

My wife and I are going through a similar exercise right now. I researched all the usual spots Miami, Savannah, Charleston, NO, Nashville, and Fort Lauderdale. In the end, I think we are going to NYC. Will save 600$ on airfare plus airport parking, and transportation at the destination. Figure it will be close to 1000$. So much to do and so many great places to eat in NYC that we never utilize because it's a pain the butt for a single night.

The wife sand I just spent a few days with our newborn daughter in Sag Harbor. Highly recommended if you can swing during the week so you don't get stuck with the weekend madness. We spend a few hours drinking wine at Wolffer Estate Vineyard.

you can't fly direct to Quebec city. Have to fly into Montreal first. Skillet is right about the French feel but a lot less people speak English there and even the French isn't real French. Many speak dialect. My wife lived there when we were dating at one point and unless your old Montreal is better.

You can. Two direct flights a day (sometimes one) on one of the United regional jets from Newark. Wife and I did it for our babymoon last year. Real easy flight (incredibly easy customs as only people online). Nice city as well feels like Europe.

Another thought is Portland Maine. Good food. Lots of microbrews. Close to Maine beaches. Boat cruises. Etc.

There are dialects everywhere. My buddy from Toulouse said he'd much rather speak with the Quebecois than Parisians. But we like Quebec City a lot more than Montreal (although Montreal is good, it has gotten more of a big city vibe each year). A really cool place is Charlevoix, which last I checked, has a neat little casino in it. It'd take a while to get there, though.

(And, vkj has been to these places more recently than I, so he may well have a better read on them.)

If your wife of 5 years wants to drive somewhere I would go with that choice. The Outer Banks of NC is a great choice, about 9 hours drive from CNJ. Leave at 5 AM and check in at 3PM after a bite for lunch.

My favorite spots are on Hatteras Island. Look up Avon and Buxton NC for places to stay, or consider Corolla area to the north. It will be a memorable vacation and you will save without airfare and rental car fees. And you can praise her for a great vacation choice that she will remember. Let us know what destination you choose.

Well, not Albany so much, but Saratoga in August is worth considering. Even if you are not gamblers it's a very cool vibe, women in sundresses and hats, live music, and it's nice little town. Hotels in town are pricey at that time, but there are places outside town. With the money you save on air, the Saratoga in Lake George is really cool, Adirondack elegance and not from from the track.

My wife and I have gone to Block Island for the past 7 years. It is an upscale but casual island off Connecticut and RI. Grand old inns and B&B's and amazing food. Kind of place you rent mopeds and bikes and go all over the island. Our favorite place - wish I could afford a house there. Highest recommendation possible

We did that a few times over the years. Living in NJ, it's always a bit of a hassle to schlep in and out of NYC, when spending the day or even just an evening. However, having a nice hotel in the City makes for an awesome 2 or 3 night stay, where you have a "home base" to come back to whenever you want - going to see multiple sights is so much easier with a nice break in-between them. Also, the money you save on travel can be spent on the hotel (not cheap, obviously) and good food/entertainment. Highly recommend it.

During the summer of 1994 in August (ironically during my 1st year as a full Yankees season ticketholder) I won the Red Sox lottery for Green Monster tickets. That was for Friday night. Planned the Fenway date around 2 nights of Jimmy Buffett in Mansfield (Thursday/Saturday). Every August there are several great shows in Mansfield/Boston. Often Buffett, Kenny Chesney, Jason Aldean, yada. ***Ther highlight of that trip (with PiscatawayMike and brother) was our whale watchimg excursion off of Boston Harbor (from Fenuiel Hall area). The ocean was full of whales it was one cof the highlights of my life...

Also though Ive never done, both Piscataway Mike and ther rest of my family (when alive) went to Saratoga (my family took a few additional days and went to Canada). Great town and atmosphere, the springs, Saratoga Perfomimg Arts Center (my biddies paid top dollar for 1st row Petty ticklets) and Saratoga Race Track/Travers.

Personally I love the beach but think the Outer Banks is more than a 3-4 day excursion. With only 3-4 days Id consioder flying into Myrtle Beach-so much new and built up over the past 30 years. The OBX and Myrtle Beach are at the top of my future vacation list but I need and want at least a week for either-unless I fly. Southern schools are mostly back by August 15th-20th.

For those on a limited budget or those who need to stay close to home I recommend trying camping/glamping. Though in summer Id prefer down the shore I do recommend Spruce Run where I just camped in May for the first time. You can pull up right to your camping spot/lot in your car and there is both a swimming and picnic area (besides your spot). Also fishing. Walmart and a major shopping center are 15ish minures from the campsites (5+ minutes into park). All spots are nice with lots 16,18,20,22 (that part of camping area) having spectacular water views. Though the facilities need some updating there are clean bathhouses with hot showers.

Frankly unless you R renting, I'd travel before August and save August for the Jersey shore. The water is warm and there is much to do. Shoot if you have the money there R 3 Springsteen shows the last week of August alone and 3 great beach shows in AC with Jimmy Buffett, The Zac Brown Band and Florida-Georgia Line (the last vtwo the first few days of September.

For a late August/Early Sept day trip I always enjoy catching a show at the Allentown Fair.

My answer is it was another excuse to get away that year on top of Iceland, Wazzu game (and other West Coast cities) and the Nebraska game.

Has anyone tried a place along the Finger Lakes and has something to recommend?

I went to Cornell undergrad so i a prejudiced a bit.....we like to stay at the Staler Hilton Hotel on the Cornell campus. The Cornell campus is like a state park....there are waterfalls and gorges everywhere.

Further east,,,for sheer charm .....we adore Skaneatles.. the Miribeau Inn and Spa is very impressive

Not wanting to know the gender because it's one of nature's last true surprises she gives us.
