to the most important fund raiser in the history of Rutgers football? 5 10 15 bucks anything will help but the vast majority of the people who love this program have donated nothing and I cannot understand why this is. Can someone tell me why? Don't you want us to be on a somewhat level playing field with the rest of the BIG? Don't you want NJ's best to stay home instead of going out of state? For coach Ash to be able to sell our program he needs the facilities. Our basketball team plays in an outdated facility. Do you give a crap about that? It seems as a whole we don't care because the numbers of those who donated to the fund is very low. Some will give the excuse that we are half way there. I call BS since half of the money was given to us by a politician. So what's your excuse to why you have not donated to the most important fund raiser in our history?

I don't think anyone that has failed to donate is going to respond. We have a cheap fan base. That's the deal. It's sad and unfortunate but it is what it is.

I love the BIG Build Fund setup. It allows you to donate a fixed amount per month over a period of time. Helps make the donation less painful. I'm donating $100.00 per month over 36 months. Not a ton but I'm doing my part. With that said, unless more big donors step up, it's going to take a looooooooooong time to hit the goal. We have less than 1500 donations. That's just not going to cut it.

Are we going to have one of these threads weekly?
I gave, but I can understand why others have not or will not, and they don't want to be reminded every week.
There are far more important things in life than sports facilities. Like curing diseases, feeding the poor, and donating to the University general fund or to a specific department or cause to further mission of the University-education.

I think the OPs point is if you care enough about Rutgers athletics to be reading these boards you should care enough to give something, anything, to the effort. I understand your point though.

Dude, that's a lot. Good for you, man.

I donated $50. In my defense that's about .01 percent of my base salary. :p

I pledged a significant amount for me, about 2% of my annual salary for the next 3 years, but everytime someone on here bitches about people not giving, it makes me want to rescind my pledge. People need to mind their own f*cking business. You don't know anyone's specific income/life situations. Not everyone has disposable income and for some people the over $1000 it now costs to have 2 tickets and parking for a season might be all they can afford to spend on sports. If you donated, that's great, good for you. If you haven't i'm sure you have a reason and ******** on here telling you you should isn't going to change that.

Those are all worthy causes. And I am a firm believer that people get to select which causes they support. People have different reasons to support different causes. And as much as they may want to, no one can afford to support every cause.

But that doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with soliciting donations for a worthy cause. To that end, I encourage Rutgers fans to donate to the Build Fund. I also want to remind everyone that @RUJON and I have each pledged to donate an extra dollar for every new donor to the Build Fund from May 10 to June 12.

I guess he feels the incessant need to try to periodically guilt people into donating.

The OP is stupid, poorly written, presumptuous and condescending.

Pat Hobbs might want to seek out the author and tell him to "put a sock in it" since the only thing he's doing is annoying people.

Also, the Build Fund isn't "the most important fundraiser in the history of Rutgers football" since the money is going to other sports facilities.

I haven't and here's why. Few years ago ,I pledged a nice chunk of change over a 5 year window. I had planned on continuing that number because it was structured in a way it could count towards my seat donation. This year they will not allow me to do that and I'm not quite sure I want to pledge suck a significant amount AND seat donations for 13 tickets.

Scarlet nation garage sale. Sell your RU stuff, swag, memorabilia, collectibles, etc. proceeds go to the fund. A way for the faithful to swap goods and stories, and raise money in the process.

I have an autographed ray rice ru card, and a framed sheet music for "on the banks..." that I'm willing to put up.

First of all, I guarantee you that I donate a shitload more than you do.

Second of all, I donate what I please, when I please, directly to the athletic department through the Athletic Development folks and don't need to extend the mechanism of my donations beyond that.

So no, you didn't "strike a nerve". You're just being an idiot.

I think this is a big part of the small numbers. People seem to forget that they recently expanded the mandatory seat gift to cover considerably more season ticket holders. So all of the people who only want to give a couple hundred bucks a year are now being forced to give as much, if not more than they want to.

For my part, I hate these threads because I don't give to the Build Fund, and have no intention to. That does not mean I don't give though. I recently increased my annual gift substantially, in a 5 year pledge that is directed elsewhere. So they are getting plenty of my money, probably more than they should be given not only my personal finances, but the relative charitable value of Rutgers Athletics. I recently stopped giving to other charities I used to support, and now direct it all at Rutgers athletics. They seem to be happy about that, but I wonder if it is really the right thing to do.

I haven't donated. My contribution to football has been in the form tickets and merchandise. It will stop there. When I want to give more I donate to my academic programs, Parkinsons research, the Epilepsy Foundation, NMD United which helps adults with neuromuscular disorders live independently, and Doners Choose which supports classroom projects in underfunded high risk communities.

While I really enjoy football, when weighing the benefit of what little I have available for donations the money goes further when distributed to those other groups.

This.
Rutgers overall is setting new records in fundraising every year. Under Hobbs, RU Athletics has already set a new record for fundraising this year. The OP needs to shut up and let the people who know how to raise funds do it. I have no doubt that by the time the Build fund projects are completed, Hobbs will have raised what he is looking for (and more) and the donor count will be above 10,000.

To the OP, please just shut up and put your money where your mouth is. Have you added Rutgers to your will for instance? Have you ever even had a conversation with anyone at the Rutgers Foundation or Athletic Development? I'm sure they would tell you that posts like you are not helpful.
And yes I gave a small amount to the Build Fund, but most of my annual donation goes to the R Fund.

I don't find your post offensive and I think a few people are being way too harsh with their replies.

The reason (not excuse) for me not donating to the fund is simple. There are many, many charities and causes my wife and I donate to and each and every one of them is just as much in need of more funds as are RU's sports programs. Could I make a small donation to RU? Sure. But IMO $100 to RU sports would do less good than if I were to donate it it elsewhere.

It's just a matter of priorities. For you, me and every one else. Good for you and RU that the football program is so important to you. But accept the reality that for many other fans it isn't the case.

They could probably increase donations if they actually called by telephone prospective donors. I remember years ago receiving annual phone calls from Rutgers students asking for donations. Maybe they still do that for younger alumni, but 20+ year alumni are in prime giving years. Too much falls back to e-mail communication. There is an immediate impetus to give when someone has you on the phone. E-mails can be ignored and deleted.

Not a RU alum so I'm not directly impacted by this, but that's why I screen my calls. Way too much telephone soliciting.

Sure I'll bite.

I never went to Rutgers and only watch out of entertainment. I'm 26 and haven't lived in NJ for the last 14 year. I make enough money to pay for my bills and a little extra. I would consider myself a big fan of Rutgers Football and BBall. Sure I can throw in 20 bucks but in my mind my $20 won't make big difference in the fund. I'd rather spend it on my DD trips on the week during my morning break. I feel like spending money on tickets and apparel is good enough for me and don't feel like I owe the university anything

I have not donated to the Build Fund by choice. Not making any statement against it; I think it is a great idea. I have for years directed my donation to the baseball program. Just my preference in where the money goes. Am I now expected to also donate to the Build Fund?

I made two donations to the Build Fund this year, but realistically, it was irrelevant because combined, the donation was less than $300. In the grand scheme, it helps FB to get the other teams out of the Hale Center, but realistically, most of this is going to teams I am not really interested in. I support WBB as an entity, but I haven't been to a game in a decade. We don't have a MBB team so there's that.

Well in that case why don't you get a list of alumni who haven't donated and go beat them with rubber hoses until they write out a check?
He can start at my job where I can direct him to an extremely annoying motormouth alumni who refuses to give Rutgers a dime ever but still feels he has the right to gripe incessantly about anything and everything RU Athletics related that pops into his mind. I'll show him exactly where the guy sits, and will gladly match any donation Chris can beat out of the guy. I'll even throw in a free lunch!

I haven't donated since the Condeleeza Rice issue. Don't see myself giving anything any time soon either because of it. I have just earmarked the money for other causes I believe in.
