Not if it's by itself, right?

Meaning he's not on it if nobody else is around....

Affirmative. Although either of the two 747s (designated VC-25s by the USAF) are only called "Air Force 1" when the President is on board. At all other times they are referred to by their tail numbers.

AF1 has only had fighter escorts on a very few occasions, historically. There's really no point to it, since there's no real air to air threat over the U.S.

Hmmm. AF1 that I saw from my yard was headed towards Newark Airport, 15 minutes away if it was going 600mph. Maybe the time stamp on my camera isn't right.
Oops my camera was 2 hours slow, it was 11:05.

I saw AF1 growing up on base at McGuire as a kid pre 9/11 when my dad could get me onto the Tarmac. Seems silly but it was one of the coolest things I saw as a kid.

They should make him stand in the TSA line.. all politicians should be forced to stand in those lines.. maybe then we'd get something done about them.

Not silly at all. Cool at any age. Regardless of how one may feel about the man or his politics, the Presidency is an American institution.

And when flying into foreign air space the host air force often offers a honorary escort but it is declined because any security benefit is negated by the increased risk of inadvertent air mishaps from close in formation flying.
