Reading about Memphis's search for Josh Pastner's replacement. Saw this note ...

Marshall, who took Wichita State to the Final Four in 2013, is making a cool $3 million now. His pay is scheduled to jump $3.5 million in two years. He is the King of Wichita – don’t laugh – and the basketball program does things in a first-class way.

Yes, that means charters and not commercial flights. Charters for recruiting. Charters whenever Marshall says he needs a charter.

Marshall is making serious money. Does Rutgers hoops (or other Big Ten hoops teams) fly charter flights for away games and charter flights for recruiting? You have to guess that Paterson, NJ's and Wichita State's Markis McDuffie would be impressed by charter flights for recruiting and road trips. And that's even before practice facilities and packed-house home games.

Personally I think Pastner will struggle in the ACC. I think he inherited a lot from Calipari. We will find out soon how good he really is.

Sounds like both parties wanted him somewhere else.....especially Pastner. Buyout got reduced from $10.6 to 1.2??

He'll get out coached by almost every team in the ACC but he'll get talent to Tech.

He didn't inherit much from Calipari, Pastner brought in some good talent and won 31 games in his third season. He's made questionable assistant coach hires.

I believe there are big donors that pay for Marshall . Those tea party guys maybe?
Koch Brothers pay a lot of Marshall's salary.

Several B1G programs use charters for travel and quite a few head coaches have charters for recruiting. Some planes, for recruiting, are owned by the schools, some are not.

Yessir, Charles Koch is the one pumping the money into that program.

Memphis is the cute girl who thinks she's a supermodel

Their fans are in for a rude awakening.

Aside from a nice run in which they were fortunate enough to have arguably the best college bball coach in the country, what have they done?

Here are starters ...
  • 1973 Memphis hoops lost in the NCAA final game to UCLA.
  • 26 appearances (years) in NCAA hoops tournament.
  • Recently their head football coach was hired away by Va Tech.
  • FedEx thinks enough of them that it affiliates themselves with Memphis athletics

Rutgers final 4 1976
Our head coach refused Michigan AND Miami
Fed Ex? so what? They play their home games in the FedEx forum. of course they have an interest

their fball coach being hired by a P5 is an indication of their conference affiliation which will never improve and illustrates my point

Memphis is where they are right now. A good program that will make the NCAAs many years, but will never be the national power they think they deserve to be. And if they have success, their coach will be hired away by a P5 school

They beat Ole Miss who is better than pretty good.

They are going to be like what most non P5 schools with the exception of Boise is--they'll build up a nice team , have a big year, lose their coach and start over again.

Gee then I guess that NCAA Final they made in the last 10 years was a mirage .

they had John Calipari as their coach. he took fracking UMASS from a crappy conference to the FF too. They aren't going to get another John Calipari, maybe ever. And that goes for us as well as nearly every other school too.

how many good seasons have they had in last 20 years? They beat Ole Miss but that coach and QB are gone.

Upsets happen and fairly good programs have been know to upset some good ones from time to time
Memphis FB has improved, but sustaining it remains to be seen.
Memphis also lost to Navy, Temple , Houston and Auburn , all bowl teams but losses .

edit:eek: oops, forgot this thread is about the Memphis MBB team .
Memphis is paying Pastner $1.2+ million to leave and saved a little over $9 million
by not firing him. That 9 million can bring in a good HC, but don't think Marshall would
take the Memphis position over where he's at.
I expect Memphis will move quickly and hire a up and coming young HC with a good recruiting reputation or a top recruiter from a major power that is supposed to be ready to take a top spot.

Memphis has a great hoop tradition-----excellent facilities and a rabid fan base.

The greater Memphis area has excellent HS basketball.

Why don't you check how many times they've made the NCAA in the last 10 years ?

Never said they weren't "good". They definitely are. What they are not is a perennial national power. And they never will be.

Eleven sweet sixteen appearances (seven before Cal), six Elite eight appearances (three before Cal) and three final fours (two without Cal).

ESPN Stats and Information Department ranked Memphis as the 19th most successful basketball program from 1962 to 2012 in their annual 50 in 50 list. (Wikipedia)

There is enough successful history for the fanbase to have high expectations.

Really? in the AAC?

They aren't ever going to be a national powerhouse again. This doesn't mean they can't be good or even make a FF . But they fancy themselves in the same lofty air as the kings of the sport, and they simply aren't, and will never be able to be.

I think the same was being said about the Big East teams after they gained control of the name but Syracuse , Louisville and UConn weren't part of it.
The Memphis MBB program might prove a lot better than their conference and be Major player in College basketball .
The top teams in non P-5 basketball conferences can be some of the best year after year in the nation. Memphis has the support to be one of them.

Memphis was a national power when they were in the mediocre CUSA. With the right coach they can be a national power in the AAC.

I honestly believe Marshall could win a National Championship at Memphis, but I think if he leaves it is for Louisville.

CUSA was a 1 bid league when Memphis was a national power. AAC is much better than that version of CUSA. No reason to believe that
similar can't be achieved in the AAC with the right coach. Pastner was a dud and will prove it again at Georgia Tech.

P5 is not a big deal in basketball, which is why Marshall can stay at Wichita State and have championship level aspirations. I just think that Memphis has similar resources, but is a program that has proven it can land higher profile recruits than Wichita State and is in a better conference.

I believe he sticks around, but I think Memphis would stand a better chance at landing Marshall than Alabama did.

in 2016 it isn't. Eventually it will be. The disparity in TV revenues between P5 and non P5 will continue to grow.

And for anyone (RU fans or non RU fans) who think I'm saying this simply as wishful thinking given that we are P5 that is not true. Before we were B1G I lamented the fact that I was convinced we were going to be stuck in the AAC and if that happened we eventually woudl have faded off into nothingness. I'm beyond thrilled that we have a seat at the Big Boy table.

Completely not true. That would mean the worst P5 teams would be better than the best AAC, MVC, Big East, A10, etc programs and that will never happen. The P5 teams are going to have bottom feeders and it is likely many of those bottom feeders will be programs that were good or very good before the reshuffling of the past 5 years. Pitt, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest in the ACC (maybe even Cuse once Boeheim retires) are going to have a difficult time climbing to the top regardless of television contracts.

Stacking the deck against non P5 works in football, but it doesn't in basketball, mainly due to scheduling, conferences and most importantly, the NCAA Tournament.

So how much money does FedEx pump into Memphis? Or Under Armor into Maryland?
Or Grumman into Army, Navy & Air Force?. Or Nike into Oregon?
Or High Point Solutions into Rutgers? OK, strike that.

I fully agree with Patrick..no one is saying Memphis is dropping off the map and they have a rich tradition no one is disputing that BUT short of getting another Calipari they are not going to be playing in Final 4s. They can contend for AAC titles with UConn and SMU for sure and maybe make Sweet 16s. Greg Marshall can go to a strong Power 5 school that can offer more than Memphis. He can have a pick of top jobs, im not talking about Illinois or Minnesota or Wake..I am talking about TOP jobs.

What top jobs? My guess would be Louisville, as I don't see him going to a school where basketball isn't priority #1. However I don't see a North Carolina or Duke hiring him. My point is if he can make a ton of money and have all the resources in the world at Wichita State he can have those at Memphis.

If he thinks he can continue his success at WSU he will stay, but if he thinks he's topped out there, Memphis makes a lot of sense IMO.

Marshall is now in Shaka Smart territory before he left VCU.
He can do a lot better than Memphis.
They were done a favor with Pastner bolting and not costing them anything.
Seems like Memphis fans more wishful than anything else
A lot of coaches have been accounted for so timing doesn't help them
Who knows how long Self stays at KU

Very good point about Self and Kansas.

I guess part of the appeal with Memphis is the underdog role. It seems that Marshall embraces that role and could find the transition difficult based on how he coaches.
