“I think the best way to move on from this is to pretend that we didn’t (go through it)," coach C. Vivian Stringer told reporters after the game.

"Just put that out of our minds. For whatever reason, we were hurt. We were hurt in the minds, we were hurt in the numbers, and we played like we could care less. We should’ve just taken it as a forfeit.”

“Tyler has begun to establish that (leadership) this year, anyway," Stringer said. "Just her temperament is not going to allow this kind of thing to happen. We’re going to step it up. You are going to see a different culture. You are going to see a lot of things different. Real soon.”

It doesn't sound like she thinks she's going.

(By the way, the line in the article about Hobbs not addressing evaluation of coaches until after a season is pretty funny - Flood and Jordan both were fired one day after their seasons ended.)

of course she is not going anywhere.....firing a coach on the cusp of 1000 wins would be a public relations nightmare. Every big name coach and the media would hammer Rutgers for days.... HOBBS is not stupid.. This is a HOF coach that took a program to two NC games , elite 8's and sweet 16's.

You do realize that the last 2 times you said a coach was "going nowhere," they soon got fired, right?

please stop misrepresenting my position....to be more blunt....STOP LYING.

Who's lying? It's a FACT! You probably said "Flood isn't going anywhere/Flood isn't getting fired" 100's of times, right up until the day he was fired, and you did the same with Eddie. How on Earth am I "lying"? No "misrepresenting" of your position here and everyone on these boards will back me up, too, so relax Ohio.

Just busting your chops anyway. Yikes.

Stone-cold sober. Are you honestly going to sit here and deny these things? I mean go ahead, feel free, but don't you dare call me a "liar" and say that I'm "misrepresenting" things when you know the truth. It's all good, whatever, but trying to make me look like the bad guy here, instead of laughing at yourself a little, is kind of childish, don't you think?

Ignore time, Have a nice day ! I come to boards for conversations regarding Coach Stringer and the future of Rutgers WBB......that's why I posted the article about her statement about a culture change....to discuss it.....no need to respond, I won't see or read it.

BACK to the OP, it appears that she is suggesting that the team lacks leaders and she needs to develop some.

My only problem with that is she has been coaching forever how does this happen? How can you not have the right culture in place to succeed after all the knowledge she has? Seems to me that she lost control a little over this team this year. The lack luster performances seem to happen a lot this year and it hurt the opportunities they could have had. This should have been something that was being cultivated throughout the seniors time on the banks.

Certainly does not sound like she plans to retire. Doesn't the coach establish the culture? not clear when she makes the comment whether she or Tyler is expected to lead the change.

The head coach... and only the head coach... is responsible for taking a team that has final four talent and having them lose in the second round of the WNIT. This isn't on the players.

In order to get leadership you first have to encourage it. You don't get leadership when you force the ball handler to stop what they are doing and look over to the sideline for a play call. Neither do you encourage it when every player on the team but two is afraid to shoot. After Duquesne's NCAA tournament win their coach said over and over that he wants his players playing freely, here it is the exact opposite. The mental aspect of the game is enormous, and she's got it totally backward.

CVS doesn't really recruit that type of player. I don't foresee any changes. The team will still be post season (NIT) quality, but CVS has been around a long time, and old dogs don't learn new tricks.

No one in the world of women's basketball thinks that the team had final four talent. Sorry.

The team had a number of players that had the talent to be on a final four team, although it is telling how they were viewed when the B1G voters were selecting the first and 2nd teams for the year.

But, with the possible exception of Geno, no coach out there would have taken this team to the final 4. If nothing else, the quality wasn't there past the top players, who were a bit too inconsistent as well for that sort of goal.

There are two sides to leadership coin. Some of it is the players and some of it is the coach (and some of the part that's the coach is who gets recruited.) On one side I think of April Sykes, who basically wouldn't play freely no matter how much rope she was given, and on the flip side I think of Matee and Essence (particularly Essence, who is one of my favorite all time RU players) who learned the framework of the CVS scheme at practically a cellular level, which let them play freely within that framework and let them take responsibility for the team.

And anybody who ever saw Essence, Matee, Tasha Pointer or Chelsea Newton play who says that "CVS doesn't recruit that type of player" is terribly forgetful. Personally, I think it's possible that Tyler could be in that category, too, but we'll find out.

I agree about Tyler.

As to how players play, I remember numerous RU coaches, not just CVS, saying that players had a "green light" but didn't take shots. In fact, I remember CVS talking about our slow starts when Cappie was here, and saying how, in the 1st half, Cappie would look to set up her teammates, who were reluctant to shoot and would pass and pass up shots until the ball was in Cappie's hands with little time left on the shot-clock. Then, in the 2nd half, Cappie would just take over.

I always had a feeling that Vivian didn't care so much if someone took a shot, only that it had better be a good one. Her quick hook was always for taking "not the best" shot, not for shooting (even missing). However, I don't think the players - over the years - ever saw the court the way CVS did and always quite identified "good" vs. "not so good" shots. So they would pass.

What is disturbing to me is why do you let this "culture" to exist for a whole season and why do you think it will change with a roster that is far worse than what we had this year. Who is she referring to, Canty, Holivay, Butts or Copper? Has to be one of those seniors. As I said before, how do you lose to the same team by 16 at HOME when you beat them on a neutral court earlier by 12?

Sometimes it's very simple, You win by 12 by making open shots and lose by 16 by missing those same type of shots.

Totally wrong. This team had all the pieces for a starting lineup and the capable backups that were needed. 3 McD All American's. Really 4, because Hollivay was a top 10 player that didn't make the McD AA team because of a cursing argument w her coach. Both were removed from the team.

The reason why they didn't look like a Final Four team was:

1. CVS not developing players...
2. CVS's horrible game time coaching

If I could kill one wrong claim about CVS, it would be that she doesn't develop players. Here's an extremely partial list of players who obviously improved their skills at RU (with examples):

Cappie (step-back 3-pointer, which she didn't have when she came)
Essence (defense, court presence)
Matee (taking care of the ball)
Piph (defense)
Betnijah (rebounding, court presence)
Tyler (scoring, passing) (not fearlessness, which she brought with her)

Of course, they all improved their stamina and conditioning. It's sometimes worth looking at team photos to see how their bodies change over time, as they get in better shape.

And I'd add Heather Zurich, who never got the headlines that other players got, but who turned from a not-important bench player to a starter and key part of the defense on teams that went to the Sweet 16, Elite 8 and national championship game, and who, despite not being ranked in the top 100 in high school, managed to play professionally after college.

If you really think that, then I truly believe you are not realistic about the players on the court. In spite of being a Vivian fan and, if you wish, supporter, I am extremely realistic. The talent - while better than the record this year - is not anywhere close to FF quality.

On your reason #1, see BeK's post to which I would add that Doug Bruno (another college coach), Pat Coyle (a WNBA coach at the time) and Debbie Antonelli (a very respected commentator) have all said that developing players was a CVS strong-point. And none of these were "forced responses", Bruno was talking about Vivian in general, Coyle was commenting on RU players in the "W", and Antonelli was color-commentating a game. None of them had to say anything about how the players were developed.

As to reason #2, I would say that I don't think CVS's game time coaching is her strongest suit, I wouldn't blame it for the team not looking like a FF team.
