Haha Jay Wright would come here why? There were at least three posters that were not fans of other schools who started threads saying there was a secret name they heard was a legit candidate anyone care to share now?

Is this your only post on the entire subject today? Nothing to say about Pikiell? Did I miss it?

So out with it then. Whats the point of keeping it a secret now?
I never had a secret candidate. I was just told that Hurley wasn't necessarily the first option, nor was he ever going to sign. There were some hurdles that I heard. I'll make a full post on everything I had heard behind the scenes about this search tonight.

My source told me that Archie Miller was the #1 option. I have no idea the extent of any contact with him but presuming there was - I'm sure Mr. Hobbs received a very quick "thanks - but no thanks".

Option #2 was Lonergan as I basically spelled it out in a prior thread - which held to form.

Obviously Hurley became the option before Lonergan and my source never mentioned Hurley and I never brought it up - as when he was telling me everything on Saturday (before Minn game) - my head was spinning when he advised me that EJ was being fired - as I was startled - as I honestly did not expect it to happen.

Sorry for the prior cryptic message threads - however I did not want to break the trust of someone who shared confidential data with me (as I hope all can respect) - as I don't know whether he reads the boards - however I felt it was important to the Board - to know that Hobbs had high sights in mind with potential replacements - and thus I could not explicitly state who the candidates were.

Groz - I hope you don't get a headache from the above post...:)

Phil,

No headache today. LOL. I actually was hoping somehow that Archie would be interested and take the job. I find it interesting that the Seton Hall guys knew what was going on when no one on this board really had any "true" insight at all.

Hobbs obviously had an order to his thought process and wanted to go right down HIS list and make a quick hire. The fact that Stony Brook was playing on Thursday night and the deal was done either Thursday night or Friday morning, Hobbs had centered on our new coach after Danny said no.

Best of Luck,
Groz

I suppose the logic of Jay Wright choosing to leave Villanova for Rutgers would probably be the same logic that brought Tommy Tuberville from Texas Tech to Cincinnati in football, or Cuonzo Martin from Tennessee to Cal. At some point, they might tire of unrealistic expectations in one place and choose to go somewhere they can start all over and build something to competitiveness or prominence.

Even if these guys could have made more money at their original place, they might just prefer a different situation.

Both those examples left bc they were about to get canned. And neither progrAm they left for could be compared to the dumpster fire of ru hoops

Here's RU's effort to hire the Wright guy [winking] :
>
Rutgers athletic director Bob Mulcahy, a day after

firing coach Kevin Bannon, called Royle to seek permission to speak with Wright.

"I look forward to talking with Bob Mulcahy," Wright said late yesterday

afternoon. He noted that he planned on speaking with the Rutgers athletic

director last night. "[Rutgers] is a great institution and [offers] the chance

to coach in the Big East."<

what might have been. If I recall correctly Jay was a serious candidate for RU until Nova found out about it and quickly fired their coach and hired him before we could sign him.

Wright was more than just a serious candidate - he was all set to come to RU. Knowing that, Villanova (of which I believe that Wright is an alum) forced out its coach (who ended up at UMass) so they could offer the job to Wright. I was teaching at Hofstra at the time and wrote him a note encouraging him to take the RU job. He replied, saying what a great institution RU is and how he liked Mulcahy. Had it not been for the Villanova intervention, he would have ended up here and I do believe that our entire basketball history from that point on would have been far better than what we've had to endure.

I'm hoping that there are parallels between Wright and our new coach. Both took over rather moribund programs in an apathetic area with little in the way of media attention, and built those programs to a level where people actually paid attention to them. Wright's last two teams were able to sell out the 5000 seat Hofstra Arena on a few occasions (their now defunct football program had trouble filling that many seats), for what is likely the only times the arena has been filled other than for graduation ceremonies and the last two Presidential debates. Hopefully Pikiell can accomplish here what Wright has done at Villanova.

Jay Wright is an alum of Bucknell. My recollection is that he was set to sign with RU but at the last minute Nova intervened .

That is correct. If not for a group of alums who came up w/ the funds to buy out Lappas, in a rush to secure Jay, he likely would have ended up at RU. It all happened within a day or two, I understand. They helped find Lappas a soft landing w/ UMass, whose AD at the time was Steve's former Nova AD, Gene DeFillipo.

The irony is that Mulcahy, a Nova alum, ended up losing out on Jay to his alma mater.

IIRC, Mulcahy had Wright onboard ready to sign but Fran Lawrence had to meet with him first. Before that happened, Nova quickly shipped off Lappas and immediately reached out to Wright and he was gone in a blink. Just another skewer Fran put into basketball at Rutgers. And a great example of how this school's administration doesn't have a clue how big time college sports work. That is the biggest reason we are where today in basketball (and sports in general) instead of being the college sports juggernaut some think we should be.
