This is the guy. I don't need to go over his resume. Everyone knows it. But why is no one talking about him? Could this be the guy that is the home run that a few posters have alluded to but won't say until after the coaching search is done? I hope so.

http://www.sportingnews.com/ncaa-ba...miami-ohio-north-carolina-state-arizona-state

If Hobbs or others at the school are scared of bringing in a fiery and passionate coach because they are fearful of another Mike Rice type, he should be the guy to get a long look.....only 53 and has won a ton of games at two P5 schools. I just prefer a little younger.

With Hobbs not letting anything out, and none of the candidates leaking like a Hurley, how do we know who is being contacted? Of course, with Sendek not having a job right now, I guess we can deduce he isn't a candidate.

Maybe Hobbs is playing it super close to the vest, and all the current posturing about Boyle, Cluess and Pikiell is just a smokescreen so that Hobbs can lure the best candidate -- Sendek -- quietly without anyone else noticing. One can only hope. If that's true, and that's what happens, this, combined with the brilliant Ash hire, would vault Hobbs to legend status fast around here. Seriously.

Hobbs might be talking to him and he's talking to other programs interested in him and neither Pat or Herb is letting their discussions be known.
Except for Hurley most candidates have been the subject of media speculation, but they have nothing solid to report.
Hurley was the exception to that rule.

I wouldn't put Sendek out of the picture, just someone in the background that doesn't have RU as a job he will jump on while other possibilities are out there and Hobbs has him on the list, but others are higher.

Sendek is possibly up for Santa Clara...Hobbs can make a pitch to him. More than one person has said he is interested..a poster here and a mod on the round table..that he may not even be a candidate is a crime

If Santa Clara got him, and it came out that we weren't even in on him, and we wound up with someone like who is currently being floated out there, then I am all for what Mike Brey said a few years ago. Shut it down. Permanently.

perplexing and maddening. If he's out there how do you want Cluess over him?

There must be more to the story than we know. I just wish we knew.

Is he up for a major build ? He would need some excellent east coast recruiters on staff. Can he find them and are they willing to come to Rutgers? On the other hand........As a coach, I'm sure he would love to coach against the big boys in the B1G.

Just curious.....anybody know the identity of his teams at NC ST or ASU ?

the guy was assembling assistants in case he was hired by someone. I dont know of coaches who do not want to coach at the highest level.

Folks, take a deep breath and don't jump to conclusions, we don't know who is on Hobbs list and who notified Hobbs not to be on it.
Could be the rumor of Sendek wanting the RU job was wrong or could be he let it be known
that he's waiting on another school and if he doesn't get it, he'll be glad to interview if the RU HCing position is still available.

For all we know Hurley withdrew his name after Hobbs told him what he would be getting, but said other candidates will be talked to before that offer is firm.

25 years of no NCAAs and having to watch Fred Hill on the sidelines tonight is enough reason to not breathe. LOL But you're right. We do not know anything. I think what we are saying, though, is that if Sendek isn't even being given a shot, and there is no reason for it, then we are stupider than ever. That's all.

If Herb can make RU MBB into a respectable program, that paint drying will be one of the best viewing RU MBB fans have had in many many moons.

I'm just saying.....he does not fit the young and hungry thing. Hobbs is looking for the next Kevin Willard..... I still think that's the best signal we have directly from Hobbs about his direction. My gut tells me the coach will be a surprise to everyone. "Young and Hungry"...Confident and ready for a big challenge...like Ash. He wanted Hurley....but, he will now move to his next young and hungry guy.

there is no mold...ever hear Willard talk...then why is Cluess on the list at 57

we need a coach first and foremost, putting an age requirement is just wrong

On the media's speculation list or on Hobbs' "playing it close to the vest" list?

Hobbs' own words is "the next Kevin Willard"....I take that as "young and hungry", just my opinion....you may disagree. Willard was 34 when Hobbs hired him. Is the next Kevin Willard a 53 or 57 year old coach......I just don't think so, again, my opinion.

WOW....paint drying is more exciting......

"Obviously, we are very excited. . . . "
And the audience reacts:

Just as I remember Herb the speaker 20 or so years ago when he was young and hungry.

But if he can win, who cares?

For whatever reason, Hobbs hasn't inquired or reached out to Sendek....this was as of late last night after Seton Hall /Gonzaga game was on...Sendek is not flashy, exciting or anything RU fans want to see, he just coaches/teaches and wins games. I can't speak for what Hobbs is or isn't doing, but there is no feasible way Cluess, Massiello, Jay Williams, Shaheen Holloway are more qualified candidates to rebuild the program.

Coaching at Stanford or Santa Clara is certainly more appealing as a lifestyle, if that's the direction Sendek decided to go, but am 100% certain he was interested in the job.

If you are not going to hire Sendek, then throw the water balloon for the biggest splash and Kevin Boyle....I have been told his staff would be an immediate upgrade on anything RU has seen in a while and would cover coaching, recruiting, and all the bases many fans complain about in not having a local impact in recruiting.

There is one domino effect that I'm aware of that can or will almost play out in the next 2-5 days "could" impact the RU coaching search here, but has nothing to do with any of the candidates mentioned in the past or in the media. It's somewhat detailed, but would make me feel somewhat more comfortable, but many might not think it would be a splashy hire/name. I wouldn't focus too much energy on it the next 3 days....there is wall to wall basketball games that will be played out and as teams win or lose, these dominoes will fall quickly.

I like Sendek and Lonergan as well but for whatever reason, lack of interest on 1 side or both sides, it doesn't seem to be happening.

I wonder about Ben Jacobson at Northern Iowa. He's gotten his team to the NCAAs in the past, now doing it again with a different crop of players. I think I've seen his name thrown out a little in the past. Is he too big a fish for us? I believe he was upped with a 10 yr contract for 900k a little while ago. Don't know if he has any interest in leaving UNI.

He plays crawl ball. Painful to watch. Has no proven ability recruit. Would be a horrible hire

He had NCST go to the NCCA's five straight years. If he did that here we would name the court after him. He must have been able to recruit some talent.

2 teams did not want his services any more...both P5. I'd rather have someone that schools were fearful he'd leave as opposed to someone whose schools didn't want him any more.

Once maybe, but twice?

i am not arguing that he is among, on paper, one of our best options at this point.

I'll be honest i am not confident in any names i see. This is why firing coaches should be last resort......like where we were

Not only that how painful to watch were some of Bo Ryan's teams at Wisconsin. But he made the NCAAs every year. I don't care about style, whatever works, I only care about Ws. If the guy can get Ws for us, his style doesn't matter to me.

Hasn't Boyle either broken rules or ignore them in the past. will Boyle have a plan to get kids to play for him and his vision....TOTALLY different than getting a HS kid to play at a prep school.

I just post what I know, what I hear (carefully posting as much as I can post here) and my opinions on football/recruiting and of course basketball.

The Boyle hire would rock the state and tri-state area if it materializes. I know people are Sendek fans, I'm not saying I'm in favor of 59-56 basketball games, but if you are a Northwestern, Rutgers, Penn State type of programs in this conference, there are really only certain ways you can compete or close the gaps, until you landed better or significantly more skilled athletes like Ohio State, Michigan State, Indiana type of programs that reload every year.

Sendek would at least make RU respectable in the fastest amount of time and get RU to a winning record and NIT status. Can he get the athletes/players in his system to get over the hump of an NCAA bid?? I think in the B1G, where you need home court advantage back at the RAC, with defense and rebounding, it's my opinion that you rebuild a program on the defensive end of the floor first.

Hiring Boyle and the assistants I've heard of would solve all of the proverbial "issues"....style of play, recruiting, local presence in media, change the image at the grass-roots level where RU doesn't grind on the recruiting trail as much as they need to....do we make the commitment to flex the muscle of finances we are finally going to have??...in time, it will be a non-issue.

It's really interesting to see people classify the program as something it's not....let the naysayers believe this is a 7-8 win roster, it's a .500 team with a legitimate staff in place next year and everyone back with a staff that focuses on defense, rebounding, boxing out and doing the basic things you need to do. Eddie fixed the roster as much as he could, there are pieces that aren't perfect, but they can work if they can change their focus.....Teams like Yale beat Baylor because they have timely shooting and box out, rebound and scrap for everything. Baylor is not well-coached, but they still own a legitimate advantage in talent.

I am not sure that aimlessly running and gunning (Tim Cluess type play), is that different from what we just had with Eddie Jordan....that style works in a conference like the MAAC or the way the Big East is trending where teams don't have size/power/bulk in the paint....Iona gave up 94 points to Iowa State yesterday and Iowa State is down a notch or two from the last 2 years when they won the Big 12 conference tournament. I don't see how that improves the product on the court, but I could be completely wrong (although I doubt it).

Hawk - i was just busting your balls...you know that I love your posts and enjoy all the info you share. my comment was based on the # of posters pounding folks for not spilling the beans/naming the candidates...that's why i posted what I did above.

I agree with you when you say this roster is a .500 team...it's why I am/was 1000% supportive of getting rid of Eddie. If we get the right coach in here, the "turnaround" is not going to be as rough as most think it is. We just need someone to come in with a structured system that works.

The more i read about Boyle, the more intrigued I am.

keep your comments and insights coming...they are much appreciated!

Sendek is 3 years younger than Cluess, has coached and won in the big time, is highly intelligent and a good recruiter, although notably lacking in local ties. but he is miles ahead of Cluess. Wish he could be the top choice.

I would take Boyle over Cluess.

I don't see how a Cluess hire will dig us out of this hole. Boyle might not either for that matter but I think at least there is a chance. Cluess and I think we'll be here again having the same discussion in 4 or 5 years.
