Can Someone with Knowledge Discuss Hurley's Recruiting Abilities?

I admit that I am a football guy, not hoops....but the one thing I know is that basketball is no different from football when it comes to having the horses to run with the best.

I have a feeling that Hurley has done a good job bringing in talent to URI, but that is not really based on anything. How has his recruiting stacked up to other coaches in the Atlantic 10?

IF he gets the job, should we feel good about his ability to convince top kids to bring their talents To The Banks?

Yes. He signed a top 80 kid from Brewster Academy (Terrell), Hassan Martin from Staten Island, EC Matthews also from the New England prep scene and he stole Cyril Langevine from Patrick School in NJ from 2016 class.

He landed Memphis transfer Kuran Iverson, Rutgers transfer Gil Buruta, Towson transfer Four McGlynn and next year adds Indiana transfer Stanford Robinson.

He signed former Rutgers commit Leroy Butts (ruled ineligble) thanks to David Cox and Jeff Dowtin from the DMV area picked Rhode Island over Rutgers and some other schools like Temple, and he's from 2016 class.

Thanks, B1G. I don't see much in the way of NJ kids in his tenure at URI. Not flaming here (as my concerns about him are well-established), but curious as to why he has not seemed to have tapped into his NJ connections. Any thoughts on that? (Or is that conclusion wrong?)

Biruta played at St. Ben's and Langevine is from Orange, NJ.

I think they offered McDuffie in 2015 but he picked Wichita.

Not sure who else he missed on off the top of my head.

Also in Hurley's backyard were the New Englad Prep schools. Probably made the most sense to mine those territories considering Rhode Island has to work within a smaller budget than "bigger" programs.

A guy with supposed great NJ connections surely would have landed more NJ kids.

Or maybe he doesn't actually have them.

Could Hurley have gotten Karl Towns to RU?

The football team can't land 5-stars. Why would the basketball program with its losing history land a 5-star?

I'd focus on talent evaluation and the non 5-stars.

How about we start with good 3-stars and go from there?

Last years class was two 4 stars and 1 3 star. Why would we shoot for only 3 stars now?

Hurley has landed four stars. And not all 3-stars are alike, champ.

Rutgers has a gym that looks like its from the NJAC.

5-star would cost boosters about $250K and up.

If 4-stars is what you want, Hurley is your best bet.

Also settle down, Francis.

Probably not a big deal....but, he also lost Mike Williams and DJ Foreman to Rutgers when he recruited head to head.

Recruiting at Rutgers is certainly very different than recruiting at URI.The academic restrictions at Rutgers are much more intense and restrictive.

Why is he such a good recruiter? Please elaborate based on the recruits that he actually got, from NJ. Thanks.

My question as well. I'm not a hater, I'm just trying to understand what he brings to the table... Also, please forgive me but, does his father still coach at St. Anthony?

Maybe Rutgers let the wrong assistant coach leave....David Cox. Rhode Island has been very successful getting guys with ties to Maryland and DC.

About the transfer Iverson to Rhode Island....sounds like he has issues. When a program like Memphis tells you to leave, that can't be a good thing.
Kuran Iverson leaving Memphis after being 'told nicely to go elsewhere'.

If Hurley comes to Rutgers.... I think David Cox gets the Rhode Island job. If it's Hurley, he should snag the Manhattan Assistant coach Matt Grady.

Of course, I would rather see Matt Grady just come along with Steve Masielo as Head Coach.

Hurley did most of his damage with New England prep school kids than the DMV.

Not one player on Rhode Island's roster is from NJ and just one or two from NYC metro area. Not impressed at all. I hope we hire a candidate alot better than DH.
