Figured today was a good day to bring the old thread back to life in new form. Based on what I had heard a few weeks ago and some chatter today, here's a list of potential candidates from those "in the know". FWIW, I'd put my faith in this basket over what the mods on the RT have posted. And no, these are not in any particular order.
  • Steve Masiello
  • Herb Sendek
  • Danny Hurley
  • Tim Cluess
  • Steve Lavin
  • Tommy Amaker
  • Jeff Boals
  • Bacari Alexander
  • Kenny Payne
  • Slice Rohrssen
I've also mentioned Kevin Boyle numerous times in the past, but have been ridiculed with that suggestion, but don't be surprised to see him as part of this equation (maybe not as head coach). Ask yourself though, how different is Kevin Boyle from Danny Hurley? Besides the college coaching experience, I'd say Boyle has actually recruited better than Danny :)

No serious list would include Kevin Boyle as the HEAD coach. Sorry. Zero experience at this level is exactly NOT what we need right now.

Judging by his hiring of Ash, Hobbs may be more impressed with someone who has a very specific plan for Rutgers, rather than being attached to a big name.

Great Point.....the standard has been set by Ash. The candidate better Kill It on the first conversation.

The assistants I see are from Midwest and South. I'm not a fan of going assistant route but at least get Book Richardson or what about Autry at Syracuse? These are guys who are not only relatable with parents and recruits but familiar with the areasareas

Why do assistant coaches in football all have names like Bucky and Shane, and assistant coaches in basketball have names like Slice and Shoes?

Yes, but let's tweak a bit. Out of the universe of possible coaches with a good skillset he wants a coach with a great mindset. That includes vision but also values.

Some of you know Jim Collins' seminal leadership book, Good to Great. The highest-performing companies were led by leaders who were off the charts with genuine humilty and with drive and determination. Humility is crucial because it means you listen to others and you learn from your errors. When combined with fierce determination the combo is unbeatable. Hobbs got that with Ash and hopefully he is going to get it with the basketball hire.

Just looked up a few:

Jeff Boals...from Ohio State...is it my imagination, or does he look like Ralphy from A Christmas Story...just grown up?

Interestingly on Kenny Payne, Kentuckky signed him to a 3 year, $2.1 million dollar contract a year ago...clearly they value him.

Sendek is the right choice - Hurley will come here with the more immediate buzz but just dont see him living up to those expectations. People are going to expect every recruit from St. Anthony to automatically come here and I just don't think that will be the case. The NJ recruiting branches are not necessarily paved in gold for Danny - he has burned some bridges around here.

Whoever we get needs to have a proven track record as a successful recruiter. Of the names being thrown out , does anyone stand out above the rest?

What if Hobbs is inclined to go the same route as he did with football and take an assistant from within the B1G? How about Dane Fife from Michigan State? 5 years assistant under Izzo after several successful years as a head coach at IPFW? Granted, his name would come up in an instant when and if Izzo retires, but I think Izzo has plenty of time to go, so if Fif wants to be a HC, then maybe this could be the place.

Boyle: sort of a basketball "Patridge" family play eh?
