Coaching Hire Comparison

Like many, I was blown away by coach Ash's press conference. He clearly is the spark that the Rutgers' football program needs. I'm curious though, for those in the know, how does his personality compare to the other coaches that were mentioned on the board and have since been hired elsewhere? I ask, because the apparent knock on Ash was that he was more of an X's and O's coach than recruiter, but I have to tell you - after that press conference, SIGN ME UP!!! I think he'll do just fine recruiting high-caliber student-athletes.

Every person who has spoke about him, that I've seen or heard, have said the words "tireless recruiter." The "he can't recruit" **** is yet another myth, perpetuated here by a single poster, who hates this hire and typically has no idea what he's talking about while whining.

I'm not sure where this particular myth is coming from, either.

Before joining Bielima at Wisconsin, Ash was recruiting coordinator for 2 years at SDSU and 1 year at Iowa State.

Chris Ash came to Ohio State and changed some things on the defensive end. For someone like Urban Meyer to let him do it, says a lot about Chris Ash. His first year at Ohio State and he helps us win a National Championship. I don't care what the naysayers say about Chris Ash. He's a winner!

Only caution I would add is that he now has Rutgers on his card, not Ohio State. Different approach needed to recruit. More sales techniques needed in this situation. I feel confident he can over come that, though. Very impressive and authentic presentation, which I believe is important.

The fact that OSU fans speaking incredibly highly of Ash, after he left, tells you how great he is. Most fans of schools try to downplay a loss when a coach moves, on his own accord.

It is the rare coaches that do such an incredible job, that the fans are will willing to go to bat for him.

Chris Ash is one of those guys. Rutgers made the very hire it could, considering its needs.

We may lose a few games next year, but I have no doubt we will see aggressive, smart, tough play across the board. Teams are going to have to earn it.

C'mon, really? You think that is how it works? Not sure 18 year olds buy into that when guys like Franklin and Harbaugh show up and have their schools to sell. Ash needs to sell the school and the opportunity and allow the recruit to feel the sense that they will get successfully coached to the next level. It won't happen overnight for sure, especially in this negative (at times) marketplace. But it appears, at least initially, that Chris Ash has the correct word-speak and approach for the job. My initial point was selling Ohio State is a whole lot easier than selling Rutgers.

I would say that being able to say those things, and wear a championship ring, will ABSOLUTELY factor into things. Not that he doesn't need to sell his vision, and RU, boy font sell Cali's comments short either.

Do you have any teenagers---specifically boys? I have a couple and they care about these type of things. Of Franklin, Harbaugh, and Ash, which one has won a national championship? And, again, I think he has the makeup to do it.

Don't underestimate credibility. The problem Flood has was that he had none. People didn't believe he was going to be coaching here much longer, and more importantly, didn't believe they would be properly developed here. Top recruits want to believe they will get playing time and be properly coached. That's why we stopped getting them. Our coach was a lame duck, and the product on the field most games was an abortion of miscommunication, confusion, and non-existent game plans.

If you present a kid with a clear vision that includes them seeing the field and having an opportunity to excel, and have the coaching chops and pedigree to back that vision up, you will be successful recruiting anywhere. I think that given what has gone on here, Ash should be able to sell playing time the next couple years in a very meaningful way. He should also really be able to sell guys playing on the defensive side of the ball.

I think there is a certain amount of group think among the top tier of NJ high school players. They either have faith in the RU program or they don't. Schiano had enough success to attract some of the top players in the state. Even though he didn't win championships he put a lot of guys into the NFL. Flood did ok recruiting but the blow out losses probably were a red flag to the top tier players. Ash comes to RU with the credibility of having coached at the highest levels in the B1G and helped tOSU win championships. That should translate into top tier players collectively viewing RU again as a viable option to showcase their skills and some to commit here.

I'd probably expand on my original question, as there is obviously much more to recruiting than simply the HC's personality - facilities, resources, history, etc. That said, I'd much prefer an authentic Chris Ash sale than a snake oil sale. In the name of full-dislosure though, I am no longer a teenager, I do not run a 4.4 40, I am not a mountain masquerading as a man, I do not have velcro-like hands, and I don't have coaches from the nation's most historied Division 1A programs slobbering all over me, so this is purely conjecture.

The original question was more for comparative purposes:

Schiano: Good salesman - reasonably certain he thinks he's great though. Some of it founded.

His personality and pedigree should allow him to keep the vast majority of commits, maybe get a few others to flip. He'll begin to develop relationships from there. But the proof of the pudding will be in how RU looks on the field. The comparison to the Flood teams (all, but especially the last) will be palpable. Have players improved? Are the new schemes effective? How hard are they playing?

I'm always amazed how people on this board, seem to make things harder then they really hard. From recruiting to game day coaching. Nobody is reinventing the wheel here folks.

I do believe Ash is a great choice and will get it done. That said, he may land 1 or 2 studs early but bottom line is WINNING.

If he builds it they will come! And he certainly has a great chance based on everything I have read.
