I hope Ash won't be your choice ...

That was point, as well. It is pointless to nit pick defensive stats as a coordinator when making the argument on who would be the better headcoach. Their success will depend on their head coaching skills.
Yup but there's no way to know that until they actually do it.

And the quality of the assistants. No more Darrell Wilsons or Dave Cohens please. That was Flood biggest fault and his downfall.

If everything we've heard is true, the money we saved NOT paying a Mullen, et al, will leave Ash with plenty to hire his ..... wait for it....ashistants!

I also think part of that was because Flood had no connections. I think Ash will have a better pipeline of coaches to tap into for us this time.

Urban's assistants have a proven record of success when moving on to Head Coaching roles. As hard as it is to project coordinators moving into head coaching positions, there is a certain level of comfort with candidates who have coached under Urban. That probably contributed to Coach Ash becoming a hot candidate.

I think after reading through this thread that Ash should try to get Aranda to join him at RU as Defensive Coordinator.

OSU and Wisconsin had 5 common opponents. OSU gave up 52 points in those 5 games and Wisconsin gave up 68. Since they did not play the same schedule, this is the best we have to compare and OSU was better.
OSU talent level was higher.

That had to be reverse psychology. Lost in the Rose Bowl! What a bummer!

You know there would be moron posters on here all in for Ash's head if we llwere to lose a rose bowl 45 - 35.

I sort of agree with the OP and it is the same reason why I wouldn't want a Meyer or Saban here. Sure, they win and they have great teams but who wouldn't with all that talent...lol

Quick reply to all the comments ... Yes, maybe UW fans, like myself, are spoiled by all the recent Rose Bowls (six in total) however, before Alvarez it was thirty-one l-o-n-g years for Bucky to get back to Pasadena. And, yes, getting there is great and all that, but winning gets you in the history books. For the losers? Only an insatiable desire to get back there to win it. Regarding Ash, I certainly hope he turns out to be the answer for Rutgers because the league certainly needs a counter-balance in the East to all those insufferable coaches/programs in Columbus, Ann Arbor, East Lansing, and State College. One caveat regarding Ash ... Remember UW's bread-and-butter was and is the run game - and a great run game is a defense's best friend and a HUGE hidden stat for the D.
And finally ... Not that we will ever know, but if Aranda was not, at least, sent out feelers by your AD, then I would argue due diligence was not observed in your coaching search - especially if Rutgers' search was focused upon hiring a top coordinator and not an experienced or up-and-coming HC.

Not sure what you point is other than having an agenda, but under Ash as the DC (2011-12) Wisconsin defense finished ranked 15th in both years. Btw, the pass defense finished 4th overall in 2011 and 18th in 2012. So I guess all the talent in Wisconsin is equal to that of Ohio.[winking]

Meh, Wisconsin went to the Rose Bowl in 2012 with a 4-4 conference record. OSU and PSU were both ranked ahead of them in the leaders division but were banned from the post season. Of course it doesn't mean Ash can't do great things for RU, but the Wisky fan is just offering some perspective.

Forget what bowls he lost/won. I just want him to recruit kids that can finish a play: Get that tackle for a loss, bring the QB down for the sack, reel in the INT, stuff the run in the hole, set the edge --- fundamental play that has been missing since Schiano left.

My favorite is the one about how we are lucky we didn’t get Mullen because hiring Ash instead will leave more money to hire top assistants!!
Good thing we avoided that bullet

his downfall was not getting along better with the dance appreciation teacher, from what I remember.... wasnt that one of the failing grades?
i could be dead wrong on that

Can't say that I run away from much that I said in this thread either. I liked Aranda best then and said Ash's personality was more outwardly what you might expect from a HC as opposed to Aranda's introverted soft spoken personality. I'd say the same now. I'm not one who has ever had an issue with his personality like others here. Also said there's no way to know until they actually do it...say the same now.

The only thing is too bad he didn't have the connections for staff that I thought he might but there's no way to know that as a fan until the hires actually happen and when they did I was hopeful but not enthused.

And the money thing too bad that didn't pan out either....we could have had Lincoln Riley lol. Which is why I don't believe the money thing now either until I actually see it materialize and try to work scenarios that stay around the kind of budget we spend currently on coaches.

I think this thread just points out even more how Rutgers can't take another chance this time of hiring a coordinator with no head coaching experience.

Ash did have a strong record as a coordinator, but there is just no way to know for sure which ones can successfully make the jump, and Rutgers football can't take another swing and miss like Ash. It HAS to be someone who has coached and run a college program before.

Yes we are and personally I think you are splitting hairs between ash and Aranda. Ash has more experience and a better resume...resume is even better than Schiano's when he took the job here.
Which is why we need a coach who possesses the “intangibles” of being able to motivate his kids above their perceived levels of achievement. Which is why I like Lance Leipold.
