because I believe you guys can/should do better. My point of view is from a Wisconsin perspective where Ash was "the" defensive guy for some of our Bret-lead Badger squads. I don't recall his exact years at UW, but those three years we went to the Rose Bowl and lost, it was the defense that ultimately cost us each game (the exception being the year Alvarez subbed for the departed BB and we lost 20-14 to Stanford.)
Granted, Ash has done well at Ohio State, however with all the talent they routinely recruit each year, who couldn't "coach" great defenses?
As much as it would hurt UW, if you do decide to go the DC-route, I'd go all-in with Dave Aranda.
Aranda is producing top-ten defenses at UW with non-Ohio-State/New-Jersey-level-recruits.
Just think what he could do with the 4 to 5 star recruits he could routinely get in-state in New Jersey vs. the 3 star and occasional 4 star recruits UW has to work like hell to get to Madison from out-of-state.
And he is smart enough to get a good OC and let him alone on that side of the ball, like Chryst is letting Aranda do on the defensive side at UW.

Actually Aranda was my top choice for those reasons but I'm okay with Ash. Your defenses were ranked in the teens 20s IIRC during his time as DC at Wisconsin. That seems like a decent to good job to me.

I could live with going to the Rose bowl and losing 3 years in a row.

That had to be reverse psychology. Lost in the Rose Bowl! What a bummer!

Not sure what you point is other than having an agenda, but under Ash as the DC (2011-12) Wisconsin defense finished ranked 15th in both years. Btw, the pass defense finished 4th overall in 2011 and 18th in 2012. So I guess all the talent in Wisconsin is equal to that of Ohio.[winking]

If we were going to go the coordinator route, obviously of which we did, Aranda was my first choice to. Top 10 defense rankings for the last 3 years (Ash didn't achieve that at Wisconsin) and he gets the most of his players. Ash was ranked 15 each of his 2 years as DC of Wisconsin

And since those three rose bowls he's only won a national championship as a DC. So I'd say there's an argument that he improved and raised his game after his stint at Wisconsin. Which is what good coaches usually do, learn from failures and improve.

That does not make him a better headcoach candidate.

Ash finished 15th in total defense both years as the DC of Wisconsin. It wasn't too hard to look that up. Also, to show you how good of a coach Ash is, the style of defense at Wisconsin was totally different from what he ran at Ohio St. Both were top 20 defenses based on different styles, schemes and approach.

I never said Ash was a bad DC, did I? He had top talent at OSU and I'm sure did a great job, although Aranda's defenses are rated higher. You could look that up to. As for how the Rutgers defense will perform with him as HC, we'll find out.

He was the DC of three teams that went to the Rose Bowl and of another team that won the NC. What a crappy coach. Sarcasm aside, there's more to building good defenses than recruiting 5 star talent and rolling the ball out there. The reason that programs like Ohio State and Alabama win championships is because they turn recruiting rankings into production and winning on the field.

You speak as though Wisconsin doesn't get players and they most certainly do. Maybe not always kids who project well to next level but they do get Good COLLEGE football players.

Yes, they do, however, do a better job in player development and fitting players into their system than recruiting highly ranked players. In other words, Rutgers is closer to Wisconsin in recruiting rankings than Ohio State.

Yes we are and personally I think you are splitting hairs between ash and Aranda. Ash has more experience and a better resume...resume is even better than Schiano's when he took the job here.

Sooooo it true your statement was agenda driven?[eyeroll]

I knew what Aranda's defenses were rated, but it's not a big enough difference in top 5 or top 15 to say one is better as a head coach.

You would hire Ash. I would have hired Aranda. Aranda did a great with the Hawaii defense which was next to impossible. As for resume, Aranda has not gotten to coach OSU talent and it takes more than a great defense to win a Championship. We could argue all day long and it really doesn't matter. For better or worse, Rutgers decided to hire Ash.

Your right. We have no clue which one would make a better Head Coach. Neither has experience as HC. Hopefully, Rutgers chose the right Coordinator.

Well I'd also include his top 10 and top 15 defense at Utah State too and the improvement from the previous year but that's besides the point. Plus Ash took over top 20 defense and kept it at the same level. I think there's something to be said for pushing a top 15-20 defense to a top 5. I liked Aranda best but I'm fine with Ash.

I also think Ash has more of the outward typical HC qualities. I've said Aranda is a soft spoken type so I couldn't tell you he'd be a great recruiter. I think more in that David Shaw mold demeanor wise. Ash has the more typical and natural feel of a HC. It doesn't necessarily mean anything though in terms of translation into results.

Really I kinda think the comparison between Durkin and Ash will be the interesting one. These were the guys hired in the same year in the same division and these are the guys who should be compared over time.

OSU and Wisconsin had 5 common opponents. OSU gave up 52 points in those 5 games and Wisconsin gave up 68. Since they did not play the same schedule, this is the best we have to compare and OSU was better.

That was point, as well. It is pointless to nit pick defensive stats as a coordinator when making the argument on who would be the better headcoach. Their success will depend on their head coaching skills.

Aranda also appears extremely intense. Regardless, I'd sign up for a Wisconsin and Ohio State defense, and their results any day of the week. Here's hoping Ash can get Rutgers defense to play like either program.

And the quality of the assistants. No more Darrell Wilsons or Dave Cohens please. That was Flood biggest fault and his downfall.

OSU defense is working with better talent than Wisconsin and certainly more then we may ever see. Aranda is doing close to the same based on points differential and yards/game with less talent, but I'm a broken record by now.
