Which, if true, only calls into question Flood's recruiting, yet again. It's hard to pass the buck when you're responsible for getting the players and coaching them.

If Rettig ever starts a game and throws for 400 and 5 tds, the drumbeat to fire Flood would be deafening. Hell, the drumbeat is deafening now after people saw him play for a half. The longer Rettig stays on the bench, the more legendary he becomes. This debate is becoming tiring. The only way Laviano comes out in a game that's still competitive is if he gets knocked unconscious.

I don't even think he would come out then. Flood would Weekend at Bernie him.

I'd want to get rid of Flood not so much for QB play, but for the performance of the OL. As a former OL coach -- and as one who raves about Browning -- something's wrong. We have 4 blue-chippers on the OL and yet instead of improvement from week-to-week, we see the opposite -- culminating in one of the worse OL performnces I've ever seen last Saturday.

Remember that play early in the season -- maybe against Penn State -- when Flood chose to take a time out rather than insert Rettig for one play when Laviano's helmet came off? Damn if that wasn't an omen...

Good point, but at least he is playing the 4 blue chippers at OL. The one QB we have with that designation doesn't even have a helmet.

The OL play has been bothering me as well. I know that both Flood and Browning are very good with OL but I just am not seeing improvement. Lumpkin has looked good for the most part but I expected to see so much more. I thought by keeping Muller at RG instead of forcing him at C would also make him near to dominate inside this year but I just haven't seen it. Nelson seems to be doing well for a first year C and it seemed Miller was on his way but he seems to be in a rut too. And I am worried about Denman. It just doesn't seem like his feet are quick enough.

It was provided as a statement, not to prove a point

And based on what the High school football coach stated on the thread he started today... based on what he has seen in the many RU practices he has witnessed, there are clear shortcomings with Rettig and justification for naming the other player the starter.

Starter . . . maybe. BUT, the arguments here have been about when/if Laviano struggles what is the harm in seeing what the other guy can do. I'm not talking about 4th quarter stuff, I mean start the 2nd half. I made the argument earlier that this should have been done already if only to protect Laviano's self-confidence. Allowing either QB to be a PUNCHING BAG does nothing to prepare him, that is but ridiculous Coach-speak.

In Flood's judgement, "Chris gives us the best chance to go 1-0." Okay Coach, but in your "judgement" it was wise to fake a punt from your own 28 yard line, maybe the problem is NOT the QB, but the Coach's judgement.;)

You guys are all making the assumptions that Rettig is equal or better than Laviano OR Rettig deserves to play based on what and how he is doing at practice.

Most likely Flood is in the wrong here and he is being stubborn and is afraid to be wrong. There is a chance here that Rettig is much worse OR doesn't deserve to play. Only those that see practices know.

Not acknowledging poor performances being influenced by the amount of times blitzes weren't picked up isn't fair.

This is coming from a guy who wanted to see Rettig start the 2nd half.

I know for me and a lot of others, it really isn't whether or not Rettig has "earned" time on the field; the issue is that Laviano has earned time on the bench. Honestly, I'll take anyone in over Laviano at this point. Just sit the kid down and let him learn. You can do just as much learning from the bench as you can in the game, especially when it comes to fixing your mistakes. Rettig may be worse than Laviano; the point is, we don't know that and we may never know that.
