As most of us know, in the 70s and early 80s Rutgers WAS a basketball school. Then we decided to go "big time" in football. Now no one can argue that the football program is not in a better place than 30 years ago, but looking back at what we've actually accomplished it is hard not to be disappointed. We have been and still are the "sleeping giant." And then there is the seemingly corresponding decline in the men's basketball program over the same time frame, especially after Wenzel. So really, after 30 years of big time athletics, we are really neither a football nor a basketball school. We're pretending to be a football school and the hope is that the money that it generates will trickle down and help the other sports programs. But as an athletic department we lack a true identity. The poster above who said we area women's hoops school is probably the closest to the actual truth.
