Steve Patterson will be fired as AD of Texas today. People are pushing for Mack Brown to return and take the AD job.

Can't see Charlie Strong surviving this..the guy he replaced will be his AD. Crazy situation going on. Does Julie make a push for Strong if this happens (and of course Flood has a bad year). (Not pushing for Flood to get fired, but just throwing out What ifs).

Why would he not survive if Mack Brown becomes his AD? Remember, Mack Brown hit a streak where he wasn't even filling his own shoes. Infact, he's the reason why Charlie Strong is in the position he's in

Strong basically sabotaged everything Brown built, and is doing everything his way. Not saying that's right or wrong, but two different philosophies it seems. Can't see it working out.

The interesting side note to this story is that it could well be largely media-driven. We were watching Gameday at tailgate Saturday morning and those guys positively ripped Texas football a new *******. It was absolutely brutal.

I do agree he is overvalued. I wouldn't want him, but with his previous relationship at Louisville, you'd think he'd know Julie. Just interesting to watch IF we need a head coach next year. Hopefully we don't!

I think the idea Mack Brown is hired as AD is just a sentimental push because Patterson was so bad. Texas will hire a real AD with experience - as Bryan Fischer pointed out, the guy at TCU and Byrne at Arizona should get calls.

Why wouldn't he come here if he was fired? The Louisville connection with JH is logical and if he were treated in such a fashion at Texas you don't think he'd rather work for a familiar face.

Two things though would be required IMO. His Texas contract would have to be such that he doesn't have to sit out and that the salary his new school pays him would offset what Texas would owe him. Second, I think his new AD would have to really stress putting a good OC next to him and let him run the offense. Other than that I think he's fine defensively and he'd probably recruit well.

Do Texas fans not remember how much they wanted Mack Brown run out? And now they want him as their AD? OK.
kinda how a lot of us felt about Gary back in the day...no? Great leader and face of the school, just not the right guy for the sideline anymore...(and no, I am not trying to turn this into yet another debate about Greg)

There's A LOT of quality candidates but some of these southern dudes aren't interested in gigs up North...jmo

They're thinking of their families also besides all their connections being in the south doesn't help em

was not the biggest reason for Strongs success his ability to recruit top Florida talent.
Maybe the boosters were not enthralled with bypassing homegrown talent
Also Texas is not alone at the top. TCU and Baylor may be getting the first looks

That's possible but I remember back when he was a DC at Florida there was a lot of talk about him in a mixed marriage and how that was not viewed too well down there and why he wasn't getting too many looks as HC. Up here I don't think many would bat an eye, if anything that may be more attractive along with working for a familiar face but who knows.

Could you imagine if RU had Texas money and sucked that bad what this board would be like?
Probably like Texas' now, lol. Honestly though, if you look around other boards I don't think we're half as bad as most of them and comments here seem a lot more measured even if it may not seem like it at times.

Right or wrong, true or false, too much baggage on JH. Texas wouldn't consider her at all, imo.

No way Charlie Strong goes from the institutional support Texas has to Rutgers.

Say what you want about the on field product the last several seasons, but Texas is one of maybe a half dozen programs that are run like NFL teams. No way he goes from there to having to beg to get his assistant coaches $15k raises.

Well it's not like he'd be doing it voluntarily, it's assuming he's fired. I think the comparison is Louisville where he worked for Jurich to RU. Their institutional support is better than ours too but it's not the chasm between Texas and us.

Assuming there's no contractual issues, you'd think he'd still rather sit out and wait then come back and work for a familiar face like JH?

Yes if the offer is $2.25-2.5M here.

If he is fired from Texas he still has a future in front of him. He can still play the bad fit or unrealistic expectations of boosters cards.

If he comes here and fails badly--which we all must be willing to admit is a possibility--where is his career as a HC? That would be 1 failure at a football factory and 1 failure in the biggest media market in the country. Would he get a 3rd crack at it somewhere in P5?

Would you take that risk knowing that the media and faculty want you to fail and the administration is largely ambivalent about your success?

And if it came to his failure, we're talking 3-4 seasons from now. If we're talking about football "failures" then, Julie's job ain't all that safe either. That would be 6-7 years of running in place.

The bad fit is a good point and for sure there would be no guarantee here. I suppose it depends on what his prospects at other P5 schools would and what kind of P5 schools are the alternative to RU.

Texas has some tough games coming up
vs Cal
vs OK state
at TCU
and then Oklahoma.
I'll be pulling for Strong, but those will not be easy games to win.

Dude the south is no less tolerant of mixed marriages then the north is. The civil war was a long time ago. C'mon man.

You can say that but that was the talk before he got his first head job. How he wouldn't get interviews, boosters being uncomfortable with it etc..That's what was out there.

Sometimes coaches or individuals just look at the money and not the situation. Texas fans expect 9-11 wins every year which in college now is very difficult. I would have also thought Penn State fans would have higher expectations paying over $4 million a year but it seems most of the Penn State fans will now accept 7-8 wins a season as a great year for the next few years and call it rebuilding. I think Penn State will be the next Miami and won't fire Franklin for 5-6 more years with 5-7 wins a year. Strong doesn't have this luxury and will be gone by 2 years. Strong might have thought he had 5-6 years to turn it around.

I worked in Radio in the past and we had the number 1 morning show for over 10 years, the morning show talent contract was up and they wanted over a million a year since their friend, another morning show host was making a million, but he moved around the country. We offered $600k a year with bonuses over $600k for 5 years if they could get the same rating they averaged the last 8 years. They accepted and probably were happy since they didn't have to move around the country. Their ratings never reached their average and kept drifting lower so we paid them $600k because they didn't perform as well. The music format just going down around the country.

I hope Texas stumbles again on an AD hire. I would like to see TX A&M bury them while TCU and Baylor take the #2 and #3 spots in the state.

College football needs a changing of the guard.

Possible but as long as they have the $$$$$ they will always have a chance to resurrect themselves.

I hope he didn't think that. With the talent in that state with the kind of money Texas has and those facilities; a turn around should take NO MORE than two seasons. Seriously.

Only a Rutgers would you expect 5/6 years. And that is what it is going to take after Flood is gone; to rebuild what GS had going in recruiting. We'll just need to live with .500 seasons for 5 or 6 more years to get the next guy in here.

Florida has probably the most liberal/least southern fanbase in the traditional SEC (not including Mizzou). A&M on the other hand is conservative (some might say redneck...) central. Google Kevin Sumlin wife. Strong isn't looking like a great HC so far, that's probably why he didn't get looks earlier, not because the color of his wife's skin.

I think Charlie Strong is probably overvalued at this point.

Pretty much.

I'm never sold on candidates that haven't proven they can win for several years and with different impact players. Too often the success of a team can be more attributed to a player (Bridgewater) rather than a coach.
